Josh Trank In Talks To Direct VENOM Movie!

It seems the Chronicle director will indeed be turning his attention to a CBM next, but not the Fantastic Four reboot. He will be sinking his teeth into Sony's long gestating solo Venom flick..

We haven't heard anything on this one for a while, it was believed to be dead in the water in fact. But now reports are coming in that Chronicle director Josh Trank is in talks to bring one of Spider-Man's most popular villains to the screen in his own movie.

LA Times report..

The studio is negotiating with Josh Trank, the hot director of this winter’s found-footage hit "Chronicle," to take the reins of the Spidey spin-off, said a person familiar with the project who was not authorized to talk about it publicly. Sony was not immediately available for comment.

As we know, Trank was rumored to be in line to helm Fox's Fantastic Four reboot. The director frequently denied this and it appears he wasn't just playing coy. Hunger Games director Gary Ross was the last to be linked to a solo Venom movie back in 2009 when the project had a script by Jacob Estes. That story was said to cast Venom in a more heroic light (as he has been in the comics from time to time) as opposed to the vicious villain from Spider-Man 3 for example. But sources report that Sony won't be going that way and will seek a new writer. I wouldn't bank on Topher Grace reprising the role either..but ya never know! It is not known if this will tie directly in with The Amazing Spider-Man or not, more info if and when we get it.

Will be interesting to see how they work this out. Especially since Spidey's new film comes out this year. Will they introduce him in the Spidey films first? Completely new origin story? This could be good or bad.

I like the choice in director though!

Screw a spin-off. Start from scratch. Don't have ANY reference to Spider-man 3. But still, not sure how you'd go about making a movie that's just about Venom. I love Venom but this has uncertainty written all over it.

Yeah it shouldn't be connected with SM3 (even though I don't hate the film I wasn't much of a fan of the venom they had in it.) This could be a cool look-

WTF, Sony still wants to do a solo Venom movie? Why not just wait to bring him in the rebooted films?

I don't know how that would even work.

@nailbiter I have no idea, either.

This could work you don't need to have the same actor as spidey and most of the time he would be masked. Skim over why he hates parker at the beginning and spiderman rejecting the symbiote. Have him fighting spidey in the beginning and the fight result in venom accidentally kill someone and decide to be a hero.

Give Spider-man and all the characters back to Marvel Studios, then we can talk Venom spin off. Until then a big NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

This will fail, hes is not even a hero so he wont exacly be saving people, the closest you are going to get to a villian saving people is ghost rider..and look at that

Just give Trank the goddamn FF reboot. He deserves better than this.

No, Venom has played a heroic role in the comics before. The original script for this was to have him as a sort of anti-hero. Who knows, maybe it will be like a horror movie.

Please go with the Flash Thompson Venom!! Attempting to manage the symbiote, but having it let loose whenever Flash can't handle the situation on his own. Please.

1st of all, you can't have a 'Venom' movie without Spider-man. How would you do that?

2ndly, stay the fu** away from the Fantastic Four.

My heart can't take another let-down...the FF is precious to me and alot of other fans!
The best of the best is THE ONLY THING THAT WILL DO!!!

The FF deserve it!

Venom never worked as a solo character for me. Ad he is one of my all time favorite marvels characters. He only worked in the same pages as spiderman.

Disappointing. The guy could do anything he wants after Chronicle, and he goes for the same old, same old with another comic book movie?

Wait, what site is this? Woops...

The current Venom series stars Flash Thompson who was a soldier who lost his legs. He is given the Venom suit (which makes legs for him) to perform government black ops. That sounds like the only way someone could do a solo Venom movie.

The Venom movie idea is still around???!!! I thought this died a long time ago. As some of you guys said how will it work? They need to introduce Venom in the rebooted Spider-Man movies first & then give him a spin-off movie! Is this hints that Venom is going to be in the next Spider-Man movie or have Sony executives lost their minds. I want a ton of other cbms before a Venom movie.

@acidbath
Good idea for a Venom movie, once they introduce him into a new Spidey movie first. Otherwise, its retarded

Do Venom justice in the new Spider Man series, make him a single villain for starters, then MAYBE do a spin off. He has to be introduced with Spider Man first. Otherwise it doesnt make any sense!

The Venom Saga would make one hell of a movie if u do it right.

Doing this movie without establishing Venom as a character PROPERLY in the Amazing Spider-Man movies? Not a wise move
