French comic-book artist Jean Giraud, also known as "Moebius, has passed away at the age of 73 after a battle with cancer. Starting out as a comic book artist, he gained cult status in the European comics world creating the Wild West anti-hero Mike Bluberry, who endured for 50 years. Then in the '70s and '80s Giraud branched out into science fiction under the "Moebius" name, and worked on bringing us the stunning visuals associated with the likes of Tron, Alien, The Fifth Element and The Abyss.

His death was confirmed by publishing house Dargaud earlier today, which said the comic-book world had lost "one of its greatest masters".. His influence can be seen all around us, and will continue to be for as long as there is science fiction.

Here is a selection of some of the works of a true visionary..

Wow, bummer. He's one of my favorites. I've got all the reprint books that Marvel/ Epic put out in the '80s & '90s and I bought everything else I could find even if it was in French and I couldn't read it. Loved his work. R.I.P. M. Giraud.

Man, this is depressing. Moebius was such a great artist and an integral figure in the world of comic books and movies.

It's always the good ones that leave us first.

Rest In Peace, Mr. Giraud. You will be missed.

Another great artist gone. RIP Moebius. I loved his clean lines and original anatomical proportions - all the stuff above is easily recognizable - Iron Man, Spider-Man, Death etc, but they are his won. No one else interpreted those characters like that. And in comics we DESPERATELY need that. TOO much stuff these days looks like it was all drawn by the same artist.
