French comic-book artist Jean Giraud, also known as "Moebius, has passed away at the age of 73 after a battle with cancer. Starting out as a comic book artist, he gained cult status in the European comics world creating the Wild West anti-hero Mike Bluberry, who endured for 50 years. Then in the '70s and '80s Giraud branched out into science fiction under the "Moebius" name, and worked on bringing us the stunning visuals associated with the likes of Tron, Alien, The Fifth Element and The Abyss.
His death was confirmed by publishing house Dargaud earlier today, which said the comic-book world had lost
"one of its greatest masters".. His influence can be seen all around us, and will continue to be for as long as there is science fiction.
