COMICS: The New CAPTAIN MARVEL Will Be...MS MARVEL?

It seems that Mar-Vell won't be resurrected for Marvel's new Captain Marvel comic coming in July, instead Carol Danvers will be taking up the mantle! We also have word on who will be writing the series..

Earlier today we posted a teaser heralding the return of Captain Marvel to the MU in July. But fans of Mar-Vell - the character last seen back in 2010 and the last to don the star and mantle of Captain Marvel - may be in for a disappointment, as Bleeding Cool report the following..



I”m told that this time, it’s Carol Danvers, Ms Marvel’s turn, in a new costume with a new name, and one that might be a little more user friendly for the fanboys. Coming from Marvel in July and written by Marvel rising star Kelly Sue DeConnick.


DeConnick, wife of Matt Fraction, has written for Oni Press, Image Comics and has worked on a few one shots and mini-series for Marvel. We had been told that we would have to wait until Wondercon this weekend to find out the details on all of this, so many thanks to Bleeding Cool's powers of scoopage. Ms Marvel's previous comic was cancelled a while back, and since that Marvel have been without a solo female comic series. I know from the last article that many of you were looking forward to Mar-Vell's triumphant return so how does this news go over with ya?

Anything with Carol Danvers/Ms Marvel, count me in! Why not just do a new series with Ms Marvel, makes more sense to me.

Dont know much about Kelly. I know she is married to Matt Fraction who has written alot of marvel stuff. Hopefully it will be good. Sara Pichelli (who does the art for Miles Morales Spiderman) should do the art work, GIRL POWER, lol.

Awesome. Love Ms. Marvel. The new name will be great. Not the first time a female has used the name though.

Monica Rambeau was Captain Marvel for years, and gave the name back to Mar-Vell's son, Genis. He was killed off later (lol) and she became Photon.

I suppose Marvel has to use the Captain Marvel name on a regular basis to keep the copyright, maybe? Anyway, why can't she be Captain Marvel? Why does she have to be 'Ms Marvel'? Why does the woman have to have a female designation to her name? Soon, Wonder Woman will become 'The Wonderfully Asexual Person'? they had a black women monica(something) called captain marvel in the 80s,can't see a problem with this.

i believe amazing spider-man annual 16 is her first appearence way back in 1982.

I'm all for this. She was Captain Marvel in the events of House of M but now she truly deserves the honor and title in the mainstream series. I cannot wait to read Matt Fractions wifes writing style, I want to see more female writers and artists getting center stage like this. If she teamed up with Amanda Connor then it will be more epic

The more I think about this, the more I tend to agree with Trudy. Mrs. Marvel is Marvels most popular female hero. I seriously doubt they would screw with her to the point of a complete make over.

"Mizz Marvel" has always been a lousy name. Warbird is better, but Marvel wants to keep their name in the title. Plus, they need to have an active character named Captain Marvel as part of the compromise deal with DC over the name, and I'd rather see a classic, interesting character sport it than some snotty teenaged Kree. Or Monica Rambeau.

Curious to see the costume update. The Jane Fonda exercise video thong is long overdue for a change. I'd hate to see the lightning bolt go, but it probably will. Ever try to explain the two Captain Marvels situation to a comics newbie?
