NIGHTBREED TV Series May Be In The Works

Clive Barker has revealed that a cable tv show based on his horror classic Cabal may be on the way. He also offers an opinion as to why his movie adaptation of the novel, renamed Kightbreed, failed to find much of an audience..

I'm sure the horror hounds among you will have seen, or at least heard of, Kightbreed. It was a 1990 horror/fantasy flick directed by Clive Barker and based on his own novella Cabal. The movie was a critical and commercial failure but went on to garner a bit of cult status. It's actually not too bad, only losing it's way completely towards the end. There was certainly the potential there for a very good movie, especially considering the book it's based on is so enjoyable. It also spawned a brilliant comic series from Epic. Anyway, now it seems we might be getting a tv series. Barker revealed the following in an interview posted to his blog..

"We are also actively in conversation about doing a Nightbreed television series which will be for cable, so it will have a chance to be as sexy or as graphic in terms of the violence as we need it to be."

And believe me, if it is to be a faithful adaptation it will need to be VERY graphic. The writer also weighed in on one potential reason the movie may not have been as successful as it could have been, and why it may find a much bigger audience today..

"The sensitivity of our culture has sort of caught up with Nightbreed. I don’t wish to be immodest but the general sense is that the movie failed because people didn’t want to associate with the monster and I think our culture has changed – I think our culture is now ready to embrace the ambiguity. You’ve only got to look at Twilight where obviously the monsters are the good guys – I’m not a huge fan but I’m enough of a fan to watch and see monsters being celebrated."

Here is a trailer for the movie, which is quite a bit better than it looks here..

Cabal is rules. The killer in it was one sadistic bastard. :)

I rather see another movie version thou than a tv series. It deserves it.

Another one i liked to see remade is Rawhead Rex. The short story was great but the movie version sucked big time.
It had lots of potential thou.

I'm definitely excited, I loved Nightbreed, and as a TV Show It'd be great, as long as it's slow and features each individual character, building lots of back story. Something like Carnivale.

But we all know that Clive Barker is the king of failed promises.

The reason the movie failed is because the execs at the movie studio had the movie cut down and butchered to almost half of what would have made it a good movie.

I remember this was one of the first times I was majorly dissapointed with a movie. I was sure it was going to be perfect, because Barker was directing. How wrong I was. Although, it is kind of perfect in a low-budget cheese-fest kind of way. Hopefully the show will be darker, more visceral and psychological and just as - if not more than - grotesque.

Not a bad idea! If it's done right that's an excellent basis for a show.

Kinda reminds me of the Darkchylde film that was supposed to be in development.

It's a shame they didn't get to make the movie :/ it looked like a good teaser as well, Darkchylde looks interesting.

Look, the movie may have been better and more cohesive if Barker had of been allowed to release his version in its entirety but I don't buy into the notion that it would have somehow made the thing great. Would it have altered Craig Shefer's lousy performance? The terrible dialog (in places)? The direction overall? Barker can be a great writer but he does not cut it as a film director imo. I do like the movie for what it is bit I'm under no illusions that it's actually particularly well made.

Loved the movie and the story Barker is twisted the movie while not perfect still ranks up with my cult faves and Barker always says that he has stuff going on and we rarely ever see the stuff come to fruition.

I recall the book being very cool...the movie adaption, far less cool. Rather silly actually, with some super-cheesy special effects and poor monster design, especially on the main guy.

Just reading that Mark Millar put together a Director's cut (Cabal Cut) of the film for his Mad Monster Party Convention to rave reviews.

Loved this flick. The studio ruined it with a botched ending they tacked on, IIRC. It's like a horror version of the X-Men. Hope the TV series happens.
