Ror Reviews: WRATH OF THE TITANS 3D

I wasn't a big fan of Clash Of The Titans (to say the least), but with a new director and the promise of a bigger monster mash did this sequel make me a believer? Click for my take..

I should have hated Wrath Of The Titans. It's exactly the type of movie that would usually grind my gears and piss me off to the point that I can't wait for it to end. Basically, the one and only aspect of this film that anyone involved gave so much as a flying [frick] about is the visuals. And I'm really not exaggerating. At some points it felt as if director Jonathan Liebsman was running around waving his hands and calling for his actors to phone it in more and spout even dumber dialog. Everyone just flings exposition at each other and stupidly repeat the names of places as they arrive to them to their companions. At one point Ares exclaims "Here we are, at Tartarus" or something to that effect, and I just wished Hades had of replied: "No shit asshole, I live here". The story is your basic "point A to point B" adventure and even still it makes hardly any sense, with continuity mistakes and silly Deus Ex Machina left right and center. The only attempt at adding any depth to the plot is to give everyone Daddy issues. Seriously, EVERYONE gets Daddy issues. Zeus, the fracking Father of the Gods, gets to have Daddy issues. So like I said, I should have hated it. I'll try my best to explain why I didn't.

I'll start by reiterating what many reviewers have said about the special effects and visual in the movie, they are spectacular. A pretty good 3D conversion helps, but that might just be because it's such a vast improvement over the last attempt. The creatures are brilliantly designed and realized, and there are some breathtaking set pieces. When Perseus and co and battling a beastie there is never a dull moment, highlights being the first dust up with a two headed, fire breathing dog..thing (I'm sure someone will point out its name) and the final boss battle with Kronos. Ok, so what you may ask? What good is great action when everything else falls flat? Well ordinarily that would be my stance, but for some reason I found myself enjoying this.

Although it's all over the place narratively, it's actually still an improvement on Clash Of The Titans which pretty much lost me after an hour. There is also a bit more of a sense of fun in this one, helped along by Tobby Kebbel as the Demi-God son of Poseidon. He plays the comedy relief sidekick role pretty well, actually managing a few laughs (well, smirks) along the way. Another welcome addition to the cast is Rosamund Pike as Andromeda. Although both characters seem to be getting built up to make some kind of difference at the end, unfortunately neither ends up doing much aside from shouting at the bad guys. Less successful are other new additions Bill Nighy and Édgar Ramirez. The usually dependable Nighy just mugs it up with a stupid "By Gum" accent and is not very funny doing it. While Ramírez is just flat out bad as Ares, God Of Bore. Liam Neeson and Ralph Feinnes reprise their roles as warring God-brothers Zeus and Hades, and while neither of these guys can ever really be bad, they are most definitely just there to have a giggle at each other's beards and collect a paycheck. Then there's Sam Worthington as Perseus. He's..not very good. Not terrible, but a serious lack of screen presence going on. This time he drops any attempt at an accent (good idea since he can't maintain one) and plays Perseus full on Aussie. It actually helps matters because we aren't taken out of the movie whenever he slips back into it like in the first one. He handles the action well enough, but this film would have benefited so much from a more charismatic lead.

But still, despite its many shortcoming I did find myself happy enough watching. There are worse movie of this ilk (anything by Michael Bay for example) but this still could, and should have been better. If all you care about is action and effects then you will definitely enjoy Wrath Of The Titans, and even people who usually like a little more substance with their carnage might still get something from it. A load of bollocks then, but a fairly enjoyable load of bollocks all the same.

Yeah, that's about what I expected. It looks enjoyable in a shut-the-brain-off-for-2-hours kind of way.

I had fun, and the scenery was a joy to take in. They outdid themselves here. I agree with the acting however. Nighy's part could have been much better, I mean, it's Bill freaking Nighy! I was so excited to see his take in Hephestus, only to be a little let down. I enjoyed seeing Danny Houston's Poseidon take on a little bigger of a role. I enjoyed Hades and Zues this time around, they were pretty uninteresting in Clash. I liked the movie for what it was haha. I definitely didn't go into this expecting an impressively written story... I wish they would have done more with the story, but I was happy with it. I recommend it.

Haven't seen the movie, but looking forward to it. And by the way, the two headed dog "thing" you refer to? It's most likely Orthus, as I don't recall there being another 2 headed dog in Greek mythology. He was said to be the brother of Cerberus (more commonly known as the 3 headed dog in the Underworld). There isn't much about Orthus besides the fact that he was a cattle dog slain by Hercules. Sorry for geeking out haha, but you asked for it :)

How does it rate alongside The Immortals? I love Greek mythology and Clash was a disappointment, I reaaly enjoyed The Immortals despite it's shortcomings and just want to know how this ranks?

I preferred Immortals, maybe because they were allowed to be much more violent and gory..but it was also just an all round better movie imo.

Other than the effects and wardrobe, it was garbage. It should have been named "Fathers & Sons". The gods went out like wimps, Cronos was nothing but a volcano-man. The other demons didn't deem like much of a threat. The entire movie was rushed like everyone was on a timetable. There was barely any character depth what so ever. Basically, everyone looked the part but didn't play the part by any means. Definitely not worth theater prices!

I would never see a movie like this in the theatre.

Great review though. One thing -- your reviews need to be a little shorter, concise, succinct. Don't be afraid to "kill the baby", i.e., chop the good bits you have written if succinctness will make the overall product pop a little more.

Thanks for doing these reviews, they are very helpful.

@RorMachine

that little dig at Bay doesht help when him and Jonathan Liebesman are doing Ninja Turtles

I have no faith at all in that. I actually don't know what Liebsman did on this movie. He can take no credit for the visuals, effects, costumes, cinematography etc. The actual action scenes are ok, but also lack continuity in some places. His primary focus as director should have been telling the story well and getting the best out of his actors, he failed miserably. Between this and Battle LA he is on my hack list until he proves me wrong.

Brewtownpych, believe it or not that is the shorter version! I had another paragraph originally. I get what your saying though.

The overall story was ok. The relationship development was bad. Everything seemed rushed. The CGI was nice. Sam worthington has made my top 20 overrated actors list. Liam Neeson was good. It felt like they tried to cram a lord of the rings style journey into 90 minutes. I would say its barely better than Clash...barely. REBOOT!

I hated the first one so much because not only was it a bad movie with bad dialog and characters, it had boring action scenes too! If this movie at least delivers on the action than maybe it will be worth checking out on half price Tuesday.

And in defense of Zues' daddy issues, his father did try to imprison him as a child by eating him and his brothers to prevent an overthrow, pretty [frick]ed up.

The two headed thing was a Chimera. The only way I knew that was the snake tail it had. Im pretty sure it was their own take on it, but it was neat. The way it acted in relation to its surroundings was great. Banging into stuff and kicking up sand etc. I also liked the Minotaur. Neat visual take on everything really.

Maybe the two headed dog was an updated version of Dioskylos from the original Clash of the Titans? The two headed dog that guarded Medusa's lair? Just a guess.

I thought exact samething about the film.
Only after i saw it i was kinda pissed off the rest of the day cause the most awesomest effects i have seen in the long time went waste in mediocre film.
IT COULD HAVE BEEN SO MUCH BETTER!!

I hope Liebesman puts samekind of effort for the motion capture effects of the Turtles too.
If they make them with motion capture... which i think they will.

Eh, IMO Sam Worthington is like the new Arnold Scwarzenegger (sp?). Both are really solid "action actors" or whatever you want to call it, but can't really do real acting or get rid of their accents. Doesn't mean their movies can't still be enjoyable.

I think this is one of those movies where your expectations beforehand will directly influence what you think of it. I wasn't expecting a great drama or anything, so I was happy with getting an enjoyable action/popcorn movie.

But you go into this movie with a bone to pick, you won't have to try very hard to rip it apart. Still, I enjoyed it
