Tim Burton On Michelle Pfeiffer's CATWOMAN; Compares His Version Of BATMAN To Christopher Nolan's

Tim Burton's Dark Shadows is almost with us, and the director is doing the rounds along with the cast to promote the movie. But in an interview with Cinemax, it's one of his earlier movies that is brought up. Tim Burton's Batman is widely regarded as one of the best CBMs of all time, and undoubtedly ushered in a new era for the genre after Hollywood had pretty much written off comic book based movies after the disastrous Superman 4. Of course it wasn't long before Burton's good work was undone by Mr Shumacker, but be that as it may, his original take on The Caped Crusader still holds up today. Indeed, for a lot of fans his Batman is a more accurate interpretation of the character than Christopher Nolan's. What does Burton think? Unfortunately he doesn't go into much detail, but does admit Nolan has at least outdone him when it comes to the darkness..

"I always get told that my material is dark, but nowadays my version of Batman looks like a lighthearted romp in comparision to Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight."

The director also discusses Michelle Pfieffer's take on Catwoman from his follow up, Batman Returns. He says that her performnace is one of his favorites, and reveals that the actress called him for a role in Dark Shadows because she was such a fan of the old tv show..

"For me, her version of Catwoman was one of my favourite performances on any movie I had worked on. I remember how she impressed me by letting a live bird fly out of her mouth, learning how to use a whip and dancing around on rooftops with high-heeled shoes on. She did all that stuff for real. I hadn't really talked to her for about 20 years, and she called before I had started working on Dark Shadows, and she told me how much she loved the old TV series and she wanted to be involved."

I wasn't a big fan of Batman Returns but I agree that Pfieffer knocked it out of the park as Catwoman. Anne Hathaway has quite a bit to live up to.

Batman Returns is the most overrated CBM ever.

How is Batman Returns overrated? Most people I know don't like it.

The lead up to the article was longer than the content, no need for such an introduction to what is already familiar.

i have to disagree re: batman returns, it was the best of the lot IMO. but that's really not saying that much. Basically none of those movies (including Burton's) get close to touching nolan's. The original did have one thing in common with TDK however: a fantastic score. all time best CBM scores:

1. Superman
2. TDK
3. Batman (1989)
4. Thor
5. Hulk

Tim Burton lost me when he made the Penguin into a black-blooded, three fingered, mutant penguin-man who was raised by penguins.

Thankfully Nolan's Catwoman and Burton's Catwoman are VERY different characters. Burton turned Catwoman into a psychotic, sexually charged, killer. Nolan appears to be sticking closer to the classic jewel thief with a conscience origin. While many are hating on Catwoman's look in this film, I can see why he didn't go with the cowled look. It's been done - he wants to go for a fresh look.

Didn't Batman whip out some guns and start shooting at people in Batman Returns?
And didn't Burton's Catwoman have like magical nine lives powers or something?

Returns also was extra great due to the fact they had christopher walken playing max shrek... one i always found to be much creepier than the penguin, although danny devito as the penguin is badass in itself

Moviemann, I said SOME fans..I know because I debate back and forth about the very subject with them again and again. I think Nolan's Batman is WAY more comic accurate in pretty much every way, but there are those who will argue it down to the hilt even with hard evidence like the things you point out.

I think Hathaway will play the role more humane and grounded as Pfeiffere's was acted pretty much over the top really...

Batman (1989) was...okay. The whole Vicke Vale love triangle was pointnless and stupid. Nicholson did alright I guess, and the tension between Batman and Joker just really wasn't there.

Returns was an improvement, even though it felt misjointed at times. I guess in the end Burton did a nice job. Better than that one fag that decided Batnipples were acceptable...

Two different movies in different times. They are uncomparable in my opinion. Both did service to Batman, unlike Schumacher's take on the character.

Pfeiffer's Catwoman was favorite thing from Returns. She was just perfect. Anne has some big heels to fill, but she's a great actress so I reserve my judgement until I see her on the big screen.

Michelle Pfieffer played Catwoman? I know she played a character named Selina Kyle, who was a nerdy secretary, was constantly getting trampled on by other people, then was pushed out a window, licked back to life by cats, had a nervous break down, created a black dominatrix outfit, and became a whip expert in a matter of hours, in some Tim Burton movie in the early 90's. I didn't know she played Catwoman though.

To me there is a difference between a movie being Dark and a movie taking it subject matter seriously. IMHO Burtons films were darker, Nolan's more serious.

When people say they are making Man of Steel "darker" what i really think (and hope) they mean is that they are taking the subject matter seriously, they want to make a good movie.

I like Burton's take on Batman, the 89 film is great, Returns had it's up and downs, but I liked it better the 89 film.
Remember it's WB's fault for making Tim Burton tone down the darkness of Batman returns since parents complained about how dark it was for their children, which also WB wanted the film to be for kids.

So it wasn't Burton's fault for how Returns turned out for some batman fans. I like most of Tim Burton's movie, sure he made bad movies, but no one is perfect in this world so take it easy guys.
Looking forward to Dark Shadows, taking my grandfather to this movie as my late grandmother loved the original series.

I liked Michael Keaton's performance as batman and Michelle'a as Catwoman. Anne Hathaway has a lot to fill in and I know she will try her best to potray Catwoman.

Batman movies were campy, laughable, and terrible pre-nolan. Batman begins was the first good DC movie since Superman II...68 years ago.
