Deadline report that Shame actor James Badge Dale has signed on to star in Iron Man 3 for director Shane Black. Apparently he would play Eric Savin, a Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Army who becomes the cyborg Coldblood after stepping on a land mine.

Badge Dale also recently appeared in The Grey, and has just finished filming The Lone Ranger for Disney. We will see him next in the Robert Zemeckis-directed Flight with Denzel Washington and World War Z with Brad Pitt.

Iron Man 3 will follow Warren Ellis' six-issue "Iron Man: Extremis" comic book arc. Robert Downey Jr, will of course return as Tony Stark, alongside Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Guy Pearce, Ben Kingsley and Rebecca Hall.

very good actor!!

lame ass character, but eh, in the hands of Shane BLlck? I have high confidence they will strip down the origin and make it into something quality.

man, IM3 has the best cast to date of any IM film..and that is saying something!

I'm not familiar with the character ColdBlood, but he looks like an early version of Deathlok... am I close? If that's the case, then I'm going to assume that Stark tech is used to blend man and machine that will eventually lead to Deathlok... I hope. Always loved Deathlok.

I had heard of Coldblood but honestly can't recall reading any stories involving him. Seems like a strange choice, but my guess is he will be substituted for the character of Mallen from Extremis.

@nuck82

random to this thread, but I agree. I love Band of Brothers, I enjoyed Pacific but it wasn't nearly as good. ah well. ...still, good actors & production values in it.

maybe he will be a hired gun or ally of Mandarin ? If Cold blood is the only villain then hopefully the script and direction shines either I will be there at midnight when it comes out somewhere in manhattan ny.

Well that means no Ghost :( I assume Coldblood is the Mallen equivalent for the film?

suspensesmith@ while i would like to see mandarin also the world of Iron Man lends itself to tech vs tech battles very well. Iron Man has tech themed baddies, always has. Cap has war themed baddies and Thor has cosmic level baddies.

I have no qualms with tech vs tech fights. imho it fits the theme of the movie best. how can man and machine work together to achieve a better future?

excellent cast here as Variety confirms that Rebecca Hall, Guy Pearce and Ben Kingsley have joined as well.. James Badge Dale is going to make a great villain, he was in The Departed, Shame and HBO's The Pacific...one the most underrated character actors working today

Coldblood came from Marvel Comics Presents... it was a good story. Very typical of the time but well done.
During the same arc Deathlok was brought back.

COLDBLOOD Powers and abilities

Eric Savin was converted into the cyborg Coldblood-7 by Dr. Gina Dyson and other Project: Ultra-Tech surgeons following designs by Mako. This gave him superhuman strength, speed, stamina, and durability, and enhanced sensory systems. Coldblood also has the ability to interface with virtually any computer system, and, by mentally entering "cyberspace," to communicate with such systems. He has a wetware-grafted computer grafted to his organic brain, a plasti-steel-reinforced skeleton, an artificial heart, synthetic hemoglobin, and artificial right eye, and artificial limbs. The right half of his face is an armored cybernetic implant. The organic portion of Coldblood's body still requires food, drink, oxygen and sleep. His in-built computer requires a recharge of electricity every twelve months of active service. The portion of Coldblood's organic brain that controls personal memories was removed during surgery that made him into a cyborg.
Coldblood wears body armor and uses conventional firearms, including a .357 automatic gun implanted in his artificial left hand. Mako and Project: Ultra-Tech also specially designed a high speed automobile for him, with built-in guns, which can be remote controlled by a device in Coldblood's left wrist.
Coldblood is an excellent hand-to-hand combatant, highly trained in commando fighting, and is a superb marksman with conventional firearms.

Weird they didn't say Coldblood on site and not Savin, wonder if this is similar to Proto Goblin speculation a while back.

I'm guessing he probably won't become Coldblood (seems like a lame villain), and just appear in his military alter-ego, as some corrupt character.

I guess I should of said guy in a suit vs guy in a suit.

When I saw Whiplash in the trailer without the armor, I was excited. But then at the end he put that suit on and I was like... damn it!

me to marvel is winning but its not perfect ie.

ironman 1 vs guy in a suit

ironman 2 vs guy in a suit (for the main battle anyways.

thor vs suit with no guy lol.

and lo and behold even cap am . in ww II ran up on a guy in a suit lmao.

i think its going to kill ultron (the best suit guy or no guy) before we even get to him.
