Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment have announced most of the voice cast for their adaptation of Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns. Robocop actor Peter Weller will star as Batman/Bruce Wayne and Modern Family’s Ariel Winter will play Robin. In addition, Prison Break bad guy Wade Williams will voice Harvey Dent/Two-Face, and Michael McKean will play Dr. Wolper. There are still a few major roles to be announced, including that of The Joker and Superman.

Jay Oliva, who storyboarded Zack Snyder’s upcoming Man of Steel, will direct from a script by Bob Goodman. Apparently WB/DC will be adapting the four-part graphic novel into two animated features titled Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part 1 and Part 2. The first installment, which will be released under the DC Comics Premiere Movie brand, will hit shelves in the fall. Part 2 will be released in early 2013.

Cool, but I have always wanted Michael Ironside to voice the older Batman after Animated series.

I am so glad they are making this a two part animated movie.

It's what they should have done with the Death of Superman animated movie. It just not a good idea to take a story that was, what 2 or 3 years long and fit it into a 80 minute movie.

The DC animated films have slowly been going down hill. Batman: Year One had good voice acting, but the quality of the animation screamed "cheap." Superman vs. the Elites looks like a bad saturday morning cartoon. Unless they throw some serious cash at this one, they are going to seriously tarnish the reputation of one of the best graphic novels of all time.

Don't screw this one up DC! You have one chance to make this work!!!

Just1Superguy, I agree that TDKSA was rubbish, but I thought Supes was handles very well in TDKR. Yes he did what the President asked of him..umm, that is Superman! Plus, Batman may have been the "hero" of the story but that doesn't mean he was in the right. I saw it from both sides, which always makes for the best superhero battles.

Ror@ agreed.
Jack Nicholson Joker FTW.
These movies need some star power.
Gary Oldman for Gordon. I know he seems too young, but try telling that to his surname.

Weller has a great voice for Batman. @Just1Superguy, I agree with you on how Miller portrayed Superman in the Dark Knight Returns, that has always irked me. Everything else about was good, but you can tell Miller doesn't care for Superman. He did the same in Batman and Robin the Boy Wonder.

After this two parter i hope DC call it a day on these adaptions. Some have been good but the ones where they adapt the novel 100% like all star superman (to a degree), superman batman apocolyse and batman year one have been the weakest. I feel this one will be the same i'll finish watching it thinking did i need to see this in motion when the graphic novel is enough. I'm probablycontradidcting myself as i know some the films that havent been adaptions like superman doomsday, green lantern emerald knights, and batman gotham knights have been awful aswell. I just feel more quality originality is needed as these are DC universe ORIGINAL animated movies. Take aspects and change others like under the red hood (the best by far) or dont make a film at all. We had no problem watching btas, stas, justice leage, jlu and young justice with their original stories and enjoying them so why do we insist Dc adapt Hush, knightfall, the killing joke etc

I can get behind this!!
MIchael Ironside played the part in an episode of "THe New Batman/Superman Adventures" and I would've loved to hear him voice the character again, but I can get begind this. I really hope they get John Di Maggio for the Joker. Loved him in Under The Red hood, and i think he'd be awesome for this version. Nothing against Mark Hamill of course but he's said he is no longer doing the voice so...

But towards The dark knight returns, whatever happened to the DCAU cast playing Bats and Joker? Weren't they originally confirmed for this?

Brandon Routh for Superman!!!
It will forever live in infamy as the ONE thing they got wrong about Man of Steel. Henry Cavill sucked in immortals. Brandon Routh is awesome. Besides, Superman is never really old. Linda Carter for Wonder Woman if they ever do Dark Knight Strikes Again.

I agree with just1superguy since that book Superman popularity diminish quickly it was like he was trying to kill superman from comicbook pages altogether

Just1Superguy, I'm not a "Marvel guy", I follow writers not brands and I have read plenty of Superman comics, clearly I just understood them a bit better than you did:) For one, this was a story set a long time after Bruce and Clark were partners and friends and if you remember correctly, Batman has long since ostracized himself from the rest of the superhero community by becoming increasingly violent and extreme in his methods. So yes, under those circumstances Superman would absolutely side with the Pres over someone he now perceives to be at least a loose canon and possibly a complete maniac.

I will probably pick this up - DC animated comes up with some pretty decent versions of the story lines in most of their movies

DC seriously need to focus on other DC characters, Batman went from being one of my favourite heroes to one I don't wanna hear anything about, I'm not even excited for TDKR and that feels odd as hell.

Invest in other heros DC/WB because Batman has now become boring as FU*K.

DC makes more animated movies than live action movies and Marvel makes more live action movies than animated movies. It balances itself out.

"I [frick]en hate this book, it literarily killed the boy-scout and ushered in the era of Bat-God we now live in." This statement is pretty laughable. The books themselves don't "DO" anything of the sort. The true change is how people react and it's pretty obvious that FM tapped into something people were starving for. Having been around when those were released I can tell you (as I'm sure most of you who were reading back them can agree) that TDK was a take on those characters people really wanted to see. It didn't pander to the true creators vision of how they were originally written to be. TDKR evolved and modernized the characters in a way that modern readers could relate to on another level. Any time people start pissing and moaning "oh that's not the way the characters were created to be" just makes me laugh. The beauty of the genre is we can get a different take on these characters each time a new author takes the reigns. We don't lose anything, we gain a level of depth that is seldom seen in other genres. It's not the "END ALL", it's a wonderful way to see them act and react to things that the creator may have never thought of.

How about finally having Jon Hamm portray Superman?

Any other ideas people?

Just1, again, not sure what you aren't getting about thsi being set in the future..it's obviously a different take on the characters. There have been many. You prefer the comics when Bats and Supes are "best friends" (which in my experience is actually rare, always have respect for each other but they don't hang out and play video games), I prefer some conflict. And this was supposed to be the straw that broke the camel's back for Superman. A great comic by a complete toolbag of a writer.
