Before teenage girls the world over go into swoon mode for Pattinson's final portrayal of sparkly vampire Edward Cullen in Twilight: Breaking Dawn pt 2, we will see him in a very different type of role in a very different type of movie - David Cronenberg's Cosmopolis. It would seem the actor is attempting to distance himself from the franchise which he is most closely associated with, but that's not all he is trying to do. Pattinson says he is determined to push himself as an actor, and if that means making smaller or less mainstream movies then that is what he will do. Speaking to CBC Television's George Stroumboulopoulos he mentions Heath Ledger's powerful, "outside the box" performance as The Joker in Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight, and then reveals that he is indeed looking to play a superhero in the future..
"You know, I always thought after The Dark Knight, for instance, it makes tons and tons of money, and Heath is doing something just outside - and people understand what he's doing, it's not like he's not doing something totally crazy, but it's just slightly outside the box of what people are used to seeing, and I really thought that was going to change everything about how the big budget movies are made. But it didn't, at all. If every single actor wasn't afraid of trying to do something slightly abstract and not concerned about their movie making tons and tons of money, then eventually the industry would change."
Asked if he hoped to achieve such an iconic performance, he said: "I think you can once. I don't know how many other times. I'm desperately trying to get a superhero movie now."
Well, just landing a superhero role doesn't mean you'll give an iconic performance in one, but I guess you have to admire his ambition. Are there any comic-book/superhero roles you guys think Pattinson might be suited for? Sound off below.
