Robert Pattinson Praises TDK & Heath Ledger; "Desperately" Wants To Play A Superhero

Have a look at what the Twilight actor has to say about breaking away from that franchise, starring in David Cronenberg's Cosmopolis, and why he thought Heath Ledger's performance in TDK would change the industry..

Before teenage girls the world over go into swoon mode for Pattinson's final portrayal of sparkly vampire Edward Cullen in Twilight: Breaking Dawn pt 2, we will see him in a very different type of role in a very different type of movie - David Cronenberg's Cosmopolis. It would seem the actor is attempting to distance himself from the franchise which he is most closely associated with, but that's not all he is trying to do. Pattinson says he is determined to push himself as an actor, and if that means making smaller or less mainstream movies then that is what he will do. Speaking to CBC Television's George Stroumboulopoulos he mentions Heath Ledger's powerful, "outside the box" performance as The Joker in Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight, and then reveals that he is indeed looking to play a superhero in the future..

"You know, I always thought after The Dark Knight, for instance, it makes tons and tons of money, and Heath is doing something just outside - and people understand what he's doing, it's not like he's not doing something totally crazy, but it's just slightly outside the box of what people are used to seeing, and I really thought that was going to change everything about how the big budget movies are made. But it didn't, at all. If every single actor wasn't afraid of trying to do something slightly abstract and not concerned about their movie making tons and tons of money, then eventually the industry would change."

Asked if he hoped to achieve such an iconic performance, he said: "I think you can once. I don't know how many other times. I'm desperately trying to get a superhero movie now."

Well, just landing a superhero role doesn't mean you'll give an iconic performance in one, but I guess you have to admire his ambition. Are there any comic-book/superhero roles you guys think Pattinson might be suited for? Sound off below.

Aquaman would be perfect..so we'd never have to see him on-screen because studios will never EVER make an aquaman film.

You know Pattinson is a good actor, although he has become rich and famous from Twilight he is not seen for his acting ability while starring in these terrible films. Now he is known for his looks so why not do something outside the box and lose his face! e.g. Play Vic Sage (Question)...

As much as I hate Pattinson now, before Twilight he was not that bad of an actor. Hell, I liked him in Harry Potter.

Is it just me, or could he actually play a convincing Doctor Strange?

Please don't murder me guys. Think of the actor, not Edward the sparkly douchebag. He's a good actor, he looks like a young Doc Strange, and he's English. Whaaat more could you need?

He HATES Twilight, but he gets a load of cash for doing it, say what you will about those movie (I was forced to watch the first one and nearly passed out from the most abysmal acting on display), but if you got the same amount of money as him, you know you would act in those shitty movies too.

Ok, I keep hearing "oh he's a good actor outside of Twilight etc..in what movie? Please someone tell me because I have seen quite a few of em and while not quite as bad as he is in Twilight, he is FAR from good. And don't anyone say those 5 frackin minutes he spent in Harry Potter either!

I dunno, I'm not that familiar with the guy. I've never seen a movie that he's been in. There's nothing about those Twilight movies that interest me at all.

He said that he wanted to be in a superhero "movie" and praised Ledger's Joker. Instead of hero, focus on him as a villian. It would have to be a character like the Riddler.

Hahaha I saw what you did there! You said keep that shitbag away from CBM's UNLESS they're DC....cause you think DC is shit and should have shit actors. Man that was hilarious, your humour is just superb, get that man a funny award fast! Just...just so wonderful.

It would be fair though given the number of shitbags that have been in Marvel....Chris Evans, Tobey Maguire, Rhys Ifans, Taylor Kitsch, Ben Affleck etc etc
