Will We See A Dwarf/Elf Romance In THE HOBBIT?

This might ruffle a few feathers. In the new issue of Total Film they have a feature on the "new faces of The Hobbit", and in the part you can see below Aidan Turner (Kili) not only reveals that his character will have a larger role in the movie than he does in J.R.R Tolkien's novel, but that he will be "pursuing" Evangeline Lilly's Elf character Tauriel..

Just in case you can#t read the text in the scan for some reason, here's what Turner says..

“Kili’s part has been expanded from the novel; as well as chasing treasure, he’s also pursuing female elf Tauriel. But is he setting his sights too high? ‘I guess he knows nothing can ever happen,’ he explains. ‘She’s about 20ft tall and he’s only two!’”

Now from that it sounds like the little fella's feeling for Tauriel will be unrequited, but who knows, we could see a bit of a romantic subplot develop there. Obviously that is a big departure from the source novel, considering the character of Tauriel doesn't even appear and was created just for the movies. Is this why she was added though? What do the Tolkien purists think about this?

I think this is one of the very few qualms I've had with Jackson's adaptations with Tolkien's books. However, hopefully this is not too but an alteration; I just don't like it though. It's like making Caspian kiss Susan in the Narnia films; these things don't exactly feel necessary.

If its a a running gag that he flirt, she shrugs him off we laugh, then fine if its in moderation.BUT if they get it on,then that just Jacksons missus sticking her nose into Hobbity lore and thats not cool.

How can he stick to the source material with an elf named Tauriel? Do You guys realize that character isn't even in the book, so it doesn't matter what he does with her??.. Duh!!!

The fact is there were only a few elves even mentioned in the Hobbit, even though they are Thranduil's prisoners, so Jackson pretty much had to add story and depth to them.

So stop your bitching please.

This is the same thing they did with the Arwen Love Story in the Lord of the Rings. They are doing to attract female viewers just like last time.

this is what happens when you have chicks writing. JRRT would not be pleased!
from what i hear they changed a lot about the Witch King and the other Nazgul and what they were doing before FotR.

NOOOOOOOOOOOO! BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!! There was no romance in the Hobbit book! It didn't have time for romance! Oakenshield was always pissing off some one so the crew was never in any one place long enough for there to be any sort of love between anyone. The story is about BILBO not the Dwarves! Stupid stinkin' razzin' frazzin' mother fuddrucking producers!

First of all, I don't think many of you know the meaning of the word romance as evidenced in your comments. Remember Gimli's encounter with Galadriel in the books? He was infatuated with her so much that his only request of her was that he may have a strand of her hair to encase in amber to display in the halls of his kind as a testament to the beauty and goodness of elves. She obliged, but obviously did not reciprocate his infatuation. Not only does this slice, which was non-existent in the movies, demonstrate that in Tolkien-written lore, a dwarf has indeed been struck by the beauty of an elf... but it shows the very definition of the word 'romance'. Gimli's request was very much a romantic one.

Intruder, exactly! Purists and fanboys don't think before they just jump out there like my toddler, "Nnnnnno!"

lmao for anyone thinking of actually picketing a movie, be warned, my friends and I will be the douchebags throwing eggs and hosing you with super-soakers filled with our piss. So beware Cape County!

Personally, I don't care. Jackson did a good job with LOTR. The books are classics and will never be superceded by their adaptations.

What DOES bother me is that "melee" game that just came out. Who the f$#@! would care about seeing Gollum fight Gandalf ala Street Fighter? That's something VERY much away from the vein of Tolkien's work.

Farkosaurus- Rage mode Bilbo with the ring and Sting would destroy Bane. He took on a horde of giant spiders practically by himself.

As long as there are still goblins in the mountain, trolls that turn to stone, spiders, a shape shifting nice guy, and a kick ass dragon, then i'm fine with this. LOTR was an amazing movie trilogy, and they departed a bit from the novels for those.

If this thing has to be padded out to two films (I really think one three-hour movie could tell the story in the book and do a credible job of it), I don't mind the idea of exploring just where Gandalf went when he disappeared for a while in the story. A lot of those events are mentioned in LOTR or the Silmarillion, so it's part of Tolkien canon, and could be a really interesting addition to the story if it's handled right. I do NOT like the idea of a clichéd tacked-on romance subplot being forced onto the story. If I want to see a romance, I'll watch a chick flick or porn.

Lets hope PJ doesn't chop out something important to squeeze that in.

@monkeyballs3 Hopefully they will release Del Toro's concept art.
