Ror Reviews: THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 3D

The decision to reboot the Spider-Man franchise so soon was met with a mixed reaction by most fans. The trailers/clips etc seemed to win many over, but how successful is Marc Webb's Spidey flick? Click for my take..

Review Opinion

This was always going to be a difficult review for me to write, regardless of what I thought of the movie. Should I try to forget Sam Raimi's trilogy ever existed and just take Marc Webb's reboot on its own merits? That seems the fairest thing to do right? Well ordinarily yes, but when Sony made the decision to reboot the Spider-Man franchise after only 5 years, and more bizarrely chose to reset the clock on Peter Parker, giving us the same origin story told so well in Raimi's original first time around, lets just say the same rules don't necessarily apply. As far as I was concerned The Amazing Spider-Man needed to be something very special - at least on par with Spider-Man 2 - to even justify its existence. So did it? I'm afraid this is going to be one of those yes and no type deals!

Honestly, aside from one or two shots/moments, I was fairly underwhelmed by pretty much everything I had seen from The Amazing Spider-Man in the build up to its release. I thought the suit was iffy, the tone seemed unsure of itself, and by God what the Hell was I looking at when this version of The Lizard was finally revealed! A Goomba from that Mario Bros. movie on steroids? I was a big fan of the cast and loved Marc Webb's 500 Days Of Summer though so I tried to remain cautiously optimistic - and I'm pleased to report that although I had issues with the movie, for the most part I was very happy to be wrong.

Forget about all that "Spidey for the Twilight generation" crap you may have read in other reviews, Webb does up the teen/romance quota slightly but unlike anything in Twilight or its ilk, it works. Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone give great performances and have sizzling screen (and offscreen evidently) chemistry. In fact, as you have probably read a dozen times before, Garfield is a joy to behold in every way as Peter Parker/Spider-Man. His take on the character is more a twitchy, put-upon loner than Tobey Maguire's out-and-out gizoid, and as a result we get a more relatable, comic-friendly hero to root for. Garfield handles the drama, humor, and action expertly - even if he's let down by a few dud lines here and there, and overdoes the gurning a bit in a few scenes too. Emma Stone matches him scene for scene, while obviously not getting as much to do, she makes for an engaging and adorable Gwen Stacy. Both are bolstered by a fine supporting cast - Martin Sheen and Sally Field are great, and I actually wished they had more screen time, while Dennis Leary - an actor who usually annoys me - is a pleasant surprise as Captain Stacy. So what about the villain of the piece? Rhys Ifans is...good as Curt Connors, but he seems slightly subdued and, well, boring in some scenes. I get that that's probably the way he was directed to play the character but it just doesn't always work. But his monstrous alter-ego works out a lot better than I had feared, even though I still don't like the design they went with, the CGI is a lot better than it seemed to be in the trailers and he's a successful creation all-in-all. The action scenes are also top notch, and you would never know Webb was working on a smaller budget. The advances in special effects ensure that everything from the web-swinging to the acrobatics to the fight scenes all look just as good if not better than they did in Raimi's movies. There are also a few nice variations on how Spidey gets around this time.

So what's the problem? Ah, it's that ever so minor thing called the story I'm afraid. You can make as many alterations to how a story is told as you like, but if the same things happen, you are telling the same story! TASM is flat out just too similar to Raimi's first Spider-Man from a narrative standpoint, and whether you are a fan of his take or not, there is no getting away from that. The only real addition plot wise - the mystery surrounding Peter's parents - is pretty much neglected after the first 10 minutes, no doubt to be explored in more detail in the sequel.

The Amazing Spider-Man is a very good movie, just not a very good reboot. Still, since one can/should only review a movie, my rating below stands - it's highly recommended. But "the untold story"? Not by a long shot.

Oh, I almost forgot to mention the 3D - you know all those other movies you have seen in 3D? It looks like that.

Every time I look for something about this movie to complain about, it ends up being a comparison between this and the movie that came out ten years ago.

I imagine I'd like the movie better had Sony let the sheets cool down a bit before rebooting and re-doing the origin story.

I still think the editing & pacing in this film was a mess.

people are being waay too harsh on this movie ... get over the fact that its a reboot, its gonna have similar elements, once you look past that ... its a pretty good movie ... i stand by my original rating ... 8.3/10

Respectful review. But I will have to disagree with the Peter/Gwen relationship. The way these two had conversations throughout the whole movie was almost unwatchable.

How many times did Peter Parker stutter? He came through the window of the police chiefs daughters bedroom, and Gwen's father caught them in the room and acted like it was no big deal. Then, Gwen asked if Peter brought his suit, when nobody at the table was even dressed up!

Silly writing and this is only a problem with the Peter/Gwen relationship. I don't have enough room to write about all of the other mistakes in this film. Overall, a couple of cool action scenes, extremely boring dialog, and very poor CGI with the Lizard. 2 out of 4 stars at most.

Good review, but I feel TASM's story is more deeper and told better than the first 3, that's why I have no problem with it being...uhm...(what many say) "retold".

Retold a million times better.

I just watchd this eaier today and I gotta say, despite the new approach to Parker's origin's story, a great cast and a superb performance from Garfield, the movie fell a bit flat. It didn't feel like a Marvel adaptation,it fell a little like a Twilight love story.

So, basically we have to suffer through a retread to get to the sequel. What a tremendous waste of money.

Id say anyone who thinks raimi's verson was better or maguire was a better spiderman, obviously isn't a fan nor do they have any vision. Aside from the basketball and football scene , the movie was the best cbm to date. Garfield's acting was as good as it gets. The chemistry between gwen and peter was perfect, and the humor was just right. If you didn't think it was good, you probably thought Daredevil was a good movie making your view invalid.

I want to know how there were cranes on every other corner with people operating inside of them. And why the fk would spidey need cranes to swing to OSCORP? His bullet wound healed up quickly didn't it? Would've made more sense if Spidey was injured when it took him 10 minutes to save a kid from a hanging car.

As one of the (apparently) few people who was not impressed with Spider Man 2, I find it hard to listen to any review which brings it up as a plateau to reach for.

I will, of course, watch this movie, although it's likely I'll wait for the DVD. I don't go to the movies much, and Avengers and The Dark Knight Rises are the only comic book movies I think will be worth spending the money on this year.

Wait, I know what'll make everybody happy.

Reboot the reboot, starting the whole thing over again (of course everybody will hate it) THEN, Marvel buy the rights back because of its failure...

That's the only thing I see satisfying you people.

Haters gonna hate till doomsday.
And I'll still love this movie to a TEE. This is finally Spidey done right.

I am going to see it and if I can get my friend (manager of movie theater) to get me in... I will. Something about it isn't making me rush to it. I am a opening day guy and this I am waiting til Saturday. I was stoked for the first one but not so much here. I want to see it a give it a fair shot but just not so excited. Avengers and Batman... YES! I see most commercials with the suit and no mask and then the whole "with great power" is out but his words like that are in. Oh well... Hopefully it will be entertaining and there is always the popcorn.

Your comment at the end about the 3D— that actually helps a lot with deciding whether to see it in that format. So, it's a good movie, just nothing new here? Cool, got it. I'll give it shot this weekend, matinee, and maybe 3D if it's the next showtime.

Something big that bothered me about TASM was the ad campaign. The trailers and commercials totally gave away the ending, and the "secret" post-credit scene.

I will admit though, that I dug the smart-ass carjacker scene -- "CROTCH!"

on point review- saw it twice to properly give it a fair judgement.
I really liked it more so than Spider-Man and Spider-Man 3 mainly because of the action sequences involving Spidey and I like Garfield more than Maguire as Peter. This Spidey was more lean and long in physical stature and the FX of his acrobatics and web slinging is more visually appealing than the previous trilogy. The story aside which didn't need to be told served as a good set up to what probably will be an awesome sequel. I actually didn't miss the Mary Jane,J Jonah Jameson characters but I was left looking forward to their ultimate appearance in the 3rd installment.

Spidey wasn't even trying to stop crime he was out looking for his uncles killer. So when he was sitting at the table arguing with Captain Stacey that whole scene made no sense. Phhh, the list goes on and on..

As someone who wasn't exactly thrilled with Sam Raimi's trilogy for it's corny tone and all around goofiness I'm very much looking forward to seeing this for myself. Everything I've seen so far makes this look more like the Spider-Man movie I had hoped for ten years ago, before I had to settle for the adventures of crybaby Spider-Man and his bitchy, annoying girlfriend.

@reverendendge sorry when i hear stupid complaints(like someone looking for something to B$%ch about) I sometimes respond. He needed cranes because realistically he couldn't swing forward shooting web to buildings on the side of him. Ever take a physics class? Oh wait they should have just had him shoot web into the sky like in the cartoons, that would have made much more sense.
