New THE HOBBIT: An UNEXPECTED JOURNEY Banner Gives Us Our First Glimpse Of Beorn

The adventure follows the journey of title character Bilbo Baggins, who is swept into an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor from the fearsome dragon Smaug. Approached out of the blue by the wizard Gandalf the Grey, Bilbo finds himself joining a company of thirteen dwarves led by the legendary warrior, Thorin Oakenshield. Their journey will take them into the Wild; through treacherous lands swarming with Goblins and Orcs, deadly Wargs and Giant Spiders, Shapeshifters and Sorcerers.

Although their goal lies to the East and the wastelands of the Lonely Mountain first they must escape the goblin tunnels, where Bilbo meets the creature that will change his life forever…Gollum.

Here, alone with Gollum, on the shores of an underground lake, the unassuming Bilbo Baggins not only discovers depths of guile and courage that surprise even him, he also gains possession of Gollum’s "precious" ring that holds unexpected and useful qualities … A simple, gold ring that is tied to the fate of all Middle-earth in ways Bilbo cannot begin to know.

hmm so it seems that the barrel scene will be in the first film. seems a bit strange as this happens very near the end of the book. i wonder if they are going to stretch out the last act or add more white council and dol guldor elements to fill out the second movie?

HelaGood

so im guessing Smaug shows up in the second film as he is no where in this... although how can the dwarves tell their story at the beginning to Bilbo without showing something of Smaug... maybe just his shadow or something...

anyway...

no goblins pictured here or elves...(apart from Galadriel and Elrond)

and only spiderwebs... no spiders...

no trolls...

so there is no sense of danger or villains in this banner... except for Gollum...

anyway, im just nitpicking...

I CANT WAIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

HelaGood: I think they're playing it right with Smaug, since he's the character most people are looking forward to seeing. We won't see any pictures of Smaug until October at the earliest. Why show all your cards months in advance? Smart marketing, imo.

We will certainly see at least some of Smaug in the first film- enough to set up a great cliffhanger and leave us all going crazy waiting for next year to see the rest of the story. It would be a HUGE mistake not to show Smaug at all in the first movie- that would REALLY piss a lot of people off, enough to put a real dent in the box office. I trust that Peter Jackson is smarter than that.
HelaGood
HelaGood - 7/10/2012, 9:48 AM
@comicb00kguy agreed! like they did with Gollum in the first movie... a distant shape moving in Moria...his glowing eyes... if they tease Smaug like that in the first Hobbit film, it will be perfect!!
Fogs
Fogs - 7/10/2012, 12:16 PM
They'll save Smaug for the big finale, with the battle of the 5 armies plus the invasion of Dol Guldur happening at the same time, just like Return of The king and the Black Gate / Mt. Doom scenes.
