David Cronenberg Is Not Fan Of Superhero Movies...At All!

In a chat with Next Movie, the Cosmopolis director states his outright dislike of any movie focusing on a superhero, calling them "adolescent in their core", and singling out TDKR in particular. Read on for the full story..

David Cronenberg has directed, in my opinion, some of the greatest movies of all time. He is best known for his surreal, body-shock horror movies such as Scanners, The Fly, and Videodrome - and actually has directed a CBM of his own in A History Of Violence. But that didn't involve anyone in tights. Still, with some established directors turning their hands to the superhero flick, it wasn't too far fetched to assume that someone like Cronenberg, who was already familiar with similar genres, may one day want to do the same. Well, don't count on it! Next Movie put the question to him, and he did not mince his words when responding..

"A superhero movie, by definition, you know, it's comic book. It's for kids. It's adolescent in its core. That has always been its appeal, and I think people who are saying, you know, 'Dark Knight Rises' is, you know, supreme cinema art, I don't think they know what the f**k they're talking about."

Although he does admit to liking Christopher Nolan's other work - particularly Memento - he says he finds his Batman movies "boring", and that at the end of the day, despite any technical brilliance, they are "still Batman running around in a stupid cape.".

Ha! I think this is great actually. It's refreshing to hear honest opinions from anyone in Hollywood, even when I disagree with them. Some people don't like CBMs and that's that I guess. I'm sure I don't need to ask you to sound off with your thoughts below!

I expect a 5-7 page thread of comments with DC and Marvel fans going at it. Even though he just clearly bashed both sides.

Yeah and Road to Perdition is a comic book series as well.

This guy needs to read some Vertigo comic's and Spawn. There is no way in hell Spawn can be a kiddy film.

Glad he didn't go with the pussy Hollywood answer and suck Nolan's dick like the Nolanites here do! haha Still don't like what he had to say particularly, but I DO love that he called out TDKR! I'm gonna go out and buy all his movies now lol

woah woah woah calm down Cronenberg. Your partly right, comic books were aimed at kids in the beginning and will always be aimed at kids to an extent but dont attack their movies, just because you like them

I loved History Of Violence but Im not a big fan of your other work but then you dont hear me attacking your other work

Well, thats another director to cross off directing any future superhero movies!

@darkgod @PaulRom

Nothing to do with Marvel or DC. He probably hasn't even seen TDKR.

I hate that stupid comics = kiddies "argument." That really shows that someone doesn't know what they're talking about.

Hell he can even read Watchmen, Punisher, Daredevil, Blade, Arkham Asylum and Preacher. Don't even get me started on Sandman.

As much as I love the themes and ideas of TDK, it's still a man running around in a Bat costume like Cronenberg said.

Intruder, don't kid yourself. Had the question been put to him about Joss Whedon and The Avengers do you really think he'd have been any kinder? Take a look at the full interview.

@ TheIrishAvenger That true but it is all in the presentation of it. Hell, Spideman is about a guy dressed up as a spider fighting crime but Rami and Webb found ways to bring the character in a serious manner inwhich it is not corny.
NerdyGeek
NerdyGeek - 8/15/2012, 2:03 PM
It's still a dude running around in a Bat costume and speaking in a gravely, ridiculous, OTT voice! You can't make "supreme cinema art" over something like that, I'm sorry.
NerdyGeek
NerdyGeek - 8/15/2012, 2:04 PM
Tony: Of course it can be done seriously, you just can't make 2001: A Space Odyssey out of it!
TonyChu

But as I said people are going to be blinded by him singling out TDKR and not even notice he hashed the Avengers as well.

So he doesn't like super her movies . . . Who cares?? To those who already commented that are trying go to make this a Nolan thing . . Just read the whole story. Says he likes Nolan, just not the Batman movies. Stop trying to make it something it isn't. Also, yes History of Violence was a graphic novel, it definitely is not a super hero story.

NerdyGeek

But, I do think Cronenberg is generalizing a bit with his " it's a comic book. It's for kids" statement. Watchmen... nuff said!

Anyone who calls anything "supreme cinema art" doesn't get the point of cinema. Or art for that matter.
DarkGrifter
DarkGrifter - 8/15/2012, 2:13 PM
I don't think I've ever seen anyone under the age of around 16-18 in any of my local comic book stores, they're mostly adults. But to be honest I think that comes from the fact kids can switch the tv on to see their favourite superheroes or play on their game consoles to get their superhero fix. Can't be helped really :/

Well... frick you too David Cronenberg.
And let's be all up on front street.

A Dangerous Method was boring as hell.
Not even Viggo and all that boning in the film made it interesting.

If that's what "adult" films are supposed to be like, then fetch me my Wonder Woman underoos.
MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 8/15/2012, 2:14 PM
Nah I've read the interview, I know what he meant. He doesn't like Superhero movies. You think if we ever got a Batman reboot you DID like he'd appreciate that? "Ah it's still just Batman running around in a cape..but this one I like!.." Yeah right.

He's talking about the genre in general, using TDKR as an example.

He's a master of his craft and a true legend in cinema, but that's no excuse to act like such an asshole about it.

I don't consider myself a Nolanite or a Marvelite, but Marvel fans on here need to seriously shut up. Neither David Cronenberg, nor you, are some sort of definitive voice as far as TDKR and the genre. Deal with it, some people, not all, like TDKR and Nolan better than Marvel's films. Vice versa goes for the Nolanites. But, seriously, all of you act as if your life depended on it, insulting people and the work or director who's achieved way more than you could ever think to. So relax, stop acting like a bunch of children. Avengers AND TDKR were amazing, why there's even debate and bickering and some mort of self-entitlement to hate something someone else likes at this point is beyond me. It's almost pathetic. That goes for Marvelies AND Nolanites. Chill. Seriously.

And now the part where Marvel fanboys single out TDKR even though Cronenberg criticized all comic book movies.
