DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES Writer On What We Will Won't See In The Movie

One of the film's writers/producers Rick Jaffa chats to Total Film about the upcoming sequel to the very popular ROTPOTA. He doesn't reveal any plot specifics, but does tell us what we most likely WON'T be seeing..

Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes was something of a surprise to many people - emerging as a firm fan-favorite around these parts especially - so there is quite a bit of anticipation for the follow up. But what can we expect to see from Caesar and his hairy pals? As any fan of the original series of films will know, time travel plays a very big part, so should we expect to see this explored in Dawn? Total Film asks one half of the movie's writing/production team what elements from the original Apes saga will inform the sequel, and while Jaffa remains tight lipped on plot details, he does address the above issue..

"I don't foresee that. But it's interesting you should ask that, because it's the one big element that we made a conscious decision not to explore in the first one, and we were worried that there might be some backlash in the science fiction community because of it. When the story first came together we were very, very excited, and yet before we pitched it, I thought, 'The one thing missing though is time travel. But it's not necessary for this particular telling'. And I don't really foresee it, to tell you the truth."

So it seems that while this sequel might take a few nods from the movies Rise had most in common with such as Conquest Of The Planet Of The Apes, and Battle For The Planet Of The Apes, it doesn't sound likely that we will build up to or lead directly into the events of the first Planet Of The Apes - at least not in a time-hopping Charlton Heston kinda way. Any fans of the originals annoyed by this, or do you think it's the right way to go about it?

Rupert Wyatt will return to direct Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes, which will be released May 23rd, 2014.

I enjoyed the first and I'm curious what the second will bring to the table.

I think that's the right way to go about it, at least for now. I don't think it's necessary to have time travel for this first sequel anyway

I thought the mars astronaut who got missing in the news was a easter egg of the time traveler?

I think the nod to the original with the newspaper headline (about the lost NASA space craft)was perfect in Rise of the Planet of the Apes.I don't see how the sequel to this would need time travel, unless, the writers decide to have the space craft return to earth at the end. I would think that would not happen until the third movie, though.

Good, no point remaking something if you're going to do it exactly the same.

i dont see how time travel would be necessary, they are trying to tell the story of how apes came to rule, not remake the original movie

Oh I see, they're gonna go back to the last Tim burton film by showing how the apes got to power when Wahlburg landed on ape earth

I remember in Rise of the Apes there were several hints of the Mars mission going wrong. Possible that when they return to earth, the planet is already taken over by apes. So time travel won't be used but that is the alternative. I think the second one will be more about the apes ruling and showing the humans slowly getting wiped out, maybe even Franco. The third one will explore the mars mission. That would be a good way to circle it all together.

This is more of a reboot but with the same elements involved which is kind of cool in a way.

The time travel was only a big part of the original because of the twist at the End. Where this interpretation is saying OK, everyone knows mankind will eventually destroy itself and the apes will take over so there's no real need for time travel and we can do the story in a more linear order. Now even though it's doing the story from the beginning rather than say the middle they haven't ruled out the whole time travel aspect due to the fact that in Rise you had the news report of the shuttle being launched.

Í didnt know the sequel has a title already. Is that really official.

Anyway i think they should show us more of the Ape Revolution. The first movie just scratch the surface. They should give us worldwide war between Apes and Humans. That would be cool.

There are two sides to the Planet of the Apes story. 1. the Astronauts who time traveled to the future. 2. the earth that did not time travel but underwent several changes. this series of movies is not about the time travel. it is about the earth that changed. The only other way Time Travel was involved was in the third movie when two of the apes came back in time and started the rise of the apes... the new series ignores that (Which I think was a smart move) and envisions a brand new story of how the Earth changed. The Time Travel should only come into play, possibly in the last of this new series when the astronauts return to earth and the apes capture them (if they go that far.)

Time travel was never a big concern for me. Honestly, I think it was just used as a plot device to make more sequels for the originals, so I'd say only use it when absolutely necessary.

The first was incredible

TASM should've taken notes from it.

Rise put in these little set ups (rocket flight)

Imagine if in tasm we saw a rocket newsheader just to hint at venom but no.

Loved this reboot, really explored and utilized a ton of its potential as a franchise

The Dark Knight's Dawn .... lol .. don't mind me fellas i am having a crack at this. I don't think any time travel story is need in the sequel to Rise. I think this makes it feel more original, lets know the story of what happened first. @95 Dawn is a really a great title.

I think this is absolute bunk. There is no way that they will go throught these movies without incorporating the missing mars astronaut. I would take this story with a huge block of salt.

Given that the whole twist of the original film was that it was Earth all along, while in this series we clearly know this to be the case, it seems like they're going to be telling a different story than the one of Heston's character.

Which is fine.

Rise was just put together so well and every scene was benefited from each other to a wonderful ending(and great start to a rebooted franchise). It had heart which should be the basis for every movie and not overlooked. Can't wait for the next installment.

If I'm remembering the movie right, humans get wiped out by a virus/plague unlike the original where theres a nuke war that destroys the planet. That would leave an opening for the astronauts to return and discover what happened in a completely different way.

@Grimfoe it's bunk? you're taking it with a block of salt? So are you saying this ISN'T one of the writers making a quote and it's just a fake rumor? wtf?

anyway, seems to me that this one should have been called Rise of the Planet of the Apes, and the last one should have been Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.

The original book did NOT have time travel. This new series of movies is set up to not use time travel, and I think that Time Travel is usually a cheap gimmick used by lazy writers. There are some exceptions, such as when the story is intended to explore some aspects of the consequences of time travel. If this new series can avoid the time travel aspect, all the better.

I was actually watching ROTPOTA again yesterday, awesome movie. Caesar wears the pants round here.

Good thing ROTPOTA was an actual reboot as opposed to a remake with better acting *cough*TASM!*cough*
