THE HOBBIT: Smaug WILL Appear In The First Movie

Not only has Peter Jackson confirmed that the dragon - who will be voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch - will make a "fleeting" appearance in An Unexpected Journey, but revealed plenty of other juicy spoilers and tidbits in this month's issue of Empire as well..

This month's issue of Empire magazine is jam packed with Hobbity goodness, with over 60 pages dedicated to Peter Jackson's return to Middle Earth. There are lots of interviews, trivia, and of course SPOILERS. Here we have what would seem to be the most interesting revelations from the mag.

Apparently Smaug the dragon will indeed appear in the first movie. Jackson says he will make a "fleeting appearance" in the prologue, and that he will "remain as liquid tongued as the book's memorable villain (he is a character not a monster).". The director also reveals that the Mirkwood spider scenes have now been moved to film two, and that the creepy arachnids will speak, but only as a "psychic communication", which only Bilbo can hear. Possibly the most exciting revelation, at least for fans hoping that the Necromancer - an incarnation of Sauron, only mentioned briefly in the novel - would make an appearance, is the news that scenes in his dark stronghold of Dol Gulder will indeed be included in the second movie, The Desolation Of Smaug. Sylvester McCoy (Radagast) teases the Wizards teaming up to take on the mysterious enemy, mentioning a scene "where the wizards are together, battling not each other but some other evil.".

There is plenty more reading in the mag, so be sure to pick up the new issue of Empire, available now.

I'm not sure how I feel about Smaug being a character. I don't feel like seeing a dragonheart looking dragon with a short snot so he can talk. I want to see the daddy of all film dragons. The biggest baddest mutha ever out on film, and a talking "animal" always takes away from that for me.

so when i thought i would see a giant spider in two towers, i was forced to wait. with the hobbit i thought i was going to get spider action knowing they would leave smaug for film 2. nope.

I love the books and loved the first movies, but i can't help but get annoyed at some of the changes i'm seeing in the movies. Is there really a need for Bilbo to be able to mentally hear the spiders talking? Why is Legolas in this movie? There just seems to be to many unnecessary changes to an already excellent story. Not to mention the fact that they are turning it into 3 movies. I'm excited for the movie, but i have a feeling that i'll like these the least of the bunch when this book is my favorite of them.

Everything will be fine. It's difficult to meet so many expectations but I'm guessing it will be like 'Empire Strikes Back' in that after dealing with the expectation changes, we will realize the freshness was required.

Besides, all we really need is the music from Howard Shore. The rest of the movie is just icing on the cake. :o)

There is a scene in the latest trailer when Gandalf is in what looks like a tree on fire watching something flyby. Maybe he's seeing Smaug for the 1st time? or maybe he just sees Colbert with his crooked elf ear, lol.

@valeriesghost We are visiting the halls of Legolas's Father. It's pretty logical that Legolas is there without being mentioned by name.

Valeriesghost: Some excellent observations. I agree, it sounds like too many changes are being made. It LOOKS beautiful, as did the LOTR movies.

I just hope Smaug is worth the wait to see him. I agree with others here- I want to see the baddest-ass looking dragon ever. Something that will scare the living hell out of kids.

Honestly, it sounds from this description like we can skip the first movie and just go see the second one, since that's when everything will be happening. We'll probably need an hour just to get Bilbo out of his hole. I'll have to buy the magazine to see for myself.

None of this fazes me. The spiders are where Bilbo's sword got its name, because they said it "stinged" them, so I was wondering how they would address that. And since it would be lame to have a bunch o talking spiders when all the other creatures in LOTR didn't talk then this would be weird. What PJ is likely doing is giving Bilbo the ability to hear the Spiders mentally when he has the ring on because a) thats how bilbo saved the dwarves, with his ring on, and b) spiders are evil creatures so the evil nature of the ring would warrant a connection, much like how Sauron could manipulate and control evil creatures with the ring (notice in ROTK when the ring is destroyed the troll fighting Aragorn immediately runs away)

Of course Smaug is going to be a character. If he wasn't it would ruin his entire scene with Bilbo, perhaps the most memorable from the book.

Me thinks Smaug will appear in the first movie as a sort of flash back scene when Thorin is explaining who Smaug is and what their mission is in Bag End. They'll probably do a voice over much like they did with Gandalf when he tells Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli how he killed the Balrog.

@comicb00kguy Skip the first one? So you dont want to see the fight with the trolls or Bilbo meet Gollum and find the Ring and escape the Goblins, or see the Dwarves and Gandalf fight Goblins and Wargs, I agree sounds totally boring and they should just cut all that out.

@Grayfox Did you even read the article, it states that Smaug will make a fleeting apperance in the PROLOGUE, you know how the start of each movie in the Lord of the Rings Trilogy started with a prologue, its going to be the same in The Hobbit trilogy, go figue right.

@Odinsmissingeye - my bad, must have missed the part about it being in prologue. I guess the thought of seeing Smaug in the first movie caused me to overlook a few important points haha

A fleeting scene like Gollum was in the first LOTR. And just like Gollum, Smaug will look completely different in the next two films after Andy Sirkis does the motion capture work.

Odinsmissingeye: My bad. I forget that sarcasm doesn't always translate well in written comments. I'm going to see the first film- it just seems like a lot of the meat of the story as detailed in the article will be in the second one, hence my sarcastic reply.
