The adventure follows the journey of title character Bilbo Baggins, who is swept into an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor from the fearsome dragon Smaug. Approached out of the blue by the wizard Gandalf the Grey, Bilbo finds himself joining a company of thirteen dwarves led by the legendary warrior, Thorin Oakenshield. Their journey will take them into the Wild; through treacherous lands swarming with Goblins and Orcs, deadly Wargs and Giant Spiders, Shapeshifters and Sorcerers.

Although their goal lies to the East and the wastelands of the Lonely Mountain first they must escape the goblin tunnels, where Bilbo meets the creature that will change his life forever…Gollum.

Here, alone with Gollum, on the shores of an underground lake, the unassuming Bilbo Baggins not only discovers depths of guile and courage that surprise even him, he also gains possession of Gollum’s "precious" ring that holds unexpected and useful qualities … A simple, gold ring that is tied to the fate of all Middle-earth in ways Bilbo cannot begin to know.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey hits theaters December 14th.

Is every person with a beard going to be called a dwarf now because I really cant see why people keep bring up the Mandarin. Also Kili, Bofur, Fili and Thorin look nothing like dwarfs especially Thorin.

@BlackFlash Bofur could kind of pass as a dwarf, but I agree the other three don't look the part. It's the narrow faces and/or lack of a prominant beard and/or human sized facial features. However seeing them scaled to dwarf size in the movie will make a big difference.

Gloin got the shaft.

Peter Jackson said early on he wanted some "handsome" dwarves to make them more relatable to a wider audience. I'll reserve full judgement until I see the film but the only dwarf I have a real issue with right now is Kili. I don't understand why he can't have more of a beard like Fili. Maybe he's just a baby.

Thorin's beard could be a little longer too but that's a nit. Maybe he clipped his beard in recognition of his exile or something.

Otherwise I think the design of these characters is fantastic. To create 13 unique looking dwarves that don't make people think of Snow White is a ridiculously hard task.

Bifur has an axe in his head from an old battle that now impedes his speech. He communicates with grunts.

We didn't miss it. It's just old news.

yaaaa you missed Gloin's poster. Luckily there's 12 other dwarves so the majority of people probably wont even notice. think it might be an issue keeping track of all these dwarves in the movie?
