New HOBBIT Pics Give Us A Close-Up Look At A Warg

We've seen concept art and a few brief glimpses in the trailers, but now thanks to WB India we have our first good look at one of the Wargs from Peter Jackson's The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. See the cute lil pooch past the jump..

Update: Here's another image that's popped up online. It appears to be a screen cap - another trailer on the way perhaps?

The adventure follows the journey of title character Bilbo Baggins, who is swept into an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor from the fearsome dragon Smaug. Approached out of the blue by the wizard Gandalf the Grey, Bilbo finds himself joining a company of thirteen dwarves led by the legendary warrior, Thorin Oakenshield. Their journey will take them into the Wild; through treacherous lands swarming with Goblins and Orcs, deadly Wargs and Giant Spiders, Shapeshifters and Sorcerers.

Although their goal lies to the East and the wastelands of the Lonely Mountain first they must escape the goblin tunnels, where Bilbo meets the creature that will change his life forever…Gollum.

Here, alone with Gollum, on the shores of an underground lake, the unassuming Bilbo Baggins not only discovers depths of guile and courage that surprise even him, he also gains possession of Gollum’s "precious" ring that holds unexpected and useful qualities … A simple, gold ring that is tied to the fate of all Middle-earth in ways Bilbo cannot begin to know.

Once again, big thanks to Jonas for the heads up. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey hits theaters December 14th.

But, yeah, this looks pretty sweet. In the book, The Hobbit, the Wargs are described as huge wolves, so this is great to see. Although, in The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, the Wargs in those films look more like hyenas than wolves (not that I'm complaining, just pointing it out).

Still, can't wait for this to come out. :)

@Greenmtboy,

Nice insult. You're on the wrong side of history, at least as indicated by the events of Tuesday in the U.S. But keep it up; I'm sure that kind of attitude plays well with the women you know.

I'm totally dyslexic. I read the jump title as "Close up look at a wang". terrible.

@AMazingSpidey- Im thinking these are the wargs del Toro designed before he left because he went on record saying that he thought the designs for the wargs needed to look more nordic. So Im thinking pj just kept the look

i don't get it... i mean yeah, they look great... and these DO look more like the wargs i imagined because theyre more standard-wolfish. but this is a prequel, not a reboot, and the production team is still jackson's... it doesn't make sense to redesign a species from one series to the next.

unless the idea is it's a different variety or subspecies of warg, like from a different climate.

There are all sorts of hybrids and cross breeds and magically altered creatures in Tolkien's world. It's not that hard to imagine that Sauruman's Orcs bred their own strain of Wargs to ride.

They probably changed it to be more similar to the book because the Wargs are actually important in this book. The sequence in Two Towers was created for the movie, though Warg Riders were mentioned. These ones have a large role in the book and movies

@ror true true... good points. i'm not the hypercritical type anyway so all i need is a moderate rationale and i'll buy anything.

Much better than the hyenas from TT.One of my major geeky gripes with LOTR.

If I am not mistaken, it has been a while since I read the Hobbit, don't these wargs also speak?

I kinda like the hyena look from LOTR a little bit better cuz it matches the nastiness of the goblins and orcs. This is still a cool design tho. I can't wait for this movie!!

@GrayFox1025 - Yes. I believe they did speak in The Hobbit. Though, I am not sure if they'll carry that into this film. Who knows? I may be wrong. :)

I really like this look better. And I wasn't too pleased with the wargs of TT, but it didn't bother me too much. I see no reason why there can't be various breeds of wargs in the different regions of middle-earth

Cool stuff. Warg looks good. Properly wolfy, yet evil looking. Just over a month now till we get to see them on the screen, eh? Looking forward to it.
