THE HOBBIT: "Smaug" TV Spot Now In High Quality; Plus Screencaps

We've already seen a tv/cam job version of this, but here it is in much better quality - giving us a proper look at the VERY brief glimpses of Smaug the Dragon, who will play a small role in the first part of Peter Jackson's new trilogy..

The adventure follows the journey of title character Bilbo Baggins, who is swept into an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor from the fearsome dragon Smaug. Approached out of the blue by the wizard Gandalf the Grey, Bilbo finds himself joining a company of thirteen dwarves led by the legendary warrior, Thorin Oakenshield. Their journey will take them into the Wild; through treacherous lands swarming with Goblins and Orcs, deadly Wargs and Giant Spiders, Shapeshifters and Sorcerers.

Although their goal lies to the East and the wastelands of the Lonely Mountain first they must escape the goblin tunnels, where Bilbo meets the creature that will change his life forever…Gollum.

Here, alone with Gollum, on the shores of an underground lake, the unassuming Bilbo Baggins not only discovers depths of guile and courage that surprise even him, he also gains possession of Gollum’s "precious" ring that holds unexpected and useful qualities … A simple, gold ring that is tied to the fate of all Middle-earth in ways Bilbo cannot begin to know.

As long as they have his golden, gem incrusted chest, I'm sold. Red would be a plus though.

FF is clearly an idiot. Let's all move on.

I agree I was really hoping for a red Smaug, but there still could be a lot of work to do on him. You never know, they may just be giving us what little they have done as a teaser and he could still be a work in progress since he's not gonna be big in the first movie.

If not though, I wonder if PJ's trying to make a connection between Smaug and the winged-beasts of the Nazgul with that black color? Hope not, that would be taking the artistic license a bit far

That isn't lake town, my best guess is that this is flashback to when smaug attacks the dwarves and drives them out. Which is why he is black as well as why It's a city built on the side of a mountain and not a wooden city buit on the lake.

He'd be black because it's distant memory maybe? Honestly there is no good reason why he shouldn't be red.

That's definitely Dale in the trailer. So it's a flashback to when Smaug first shows up and takes out the city. It matches perfectly with the set pictures of Dale that were already released.

You can see some of the pics at the bottom of this page:

I have no idea why Smaug is black though. He definitely should be red. Plus he looks kinda small in the trailer. Maybe they'll have him be larger in the "present day" compared to the flashback.
