STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS IMAX Footage Details Hit

Today a few lucky folks got to see the 9-minute IMAX prologue of J.J. Abrams highly anticipated Star Trek sequel. The director asked those in attendance not to go into too much detail, but we have a brief outline for you here if you're interested. There are some mild SPOILERS

First off, the general consensus seems to be a very positive one, and I haven't heard from anyone who wasn't thoroughly impressed by what they saw. By all accounts the 3D/IMAX experience went over very well, and there was a surprisingly light tone to the footage screened, as Abrams wanted to assure fans that there would still be a sense of fun to the film despite the title, and the pretty gloomy announcement teaser we saw the other day. Another thing to note is that the identity of Benedict Cumberbatch's villain is still unknown, despite appearing in the prologue and actually being asked outright who he is by another character. Anyway, the most revealing breakdown I've seen came from the guys at Cinemablend, so have a look at what they had to say..

"The first half of the footage begins with Noel Clarke and Kayla Hassan as parents visiting their sick child – who appears to be losing her hair – in the hospital. We see Cumberbatch come up from behind Clarke while he is standing on a terrace grieving and the mystery man says, “I can save her. I can save your daughter.” As an extra tease, Clarke actually asks Cumberbatch who he is, but instead of getting an answer we just get a slow zoom on the Sherlock actor’s face. So we know that his character has some kind of healing ability – whether he’s a doctor or it’s something supernatural – but we remain in the dark about his actual name.

That part takes up all of two minutes, leaving the rest of the footage to focus on the crew of the Enterprise – Abrams’ really living up to his word in that respect. As seen in the trailer that was released this past week, Kirk (Chris Pine) and Bones (Karl Urban) are down on a strange planet with weird red plants running for their life while Uhura (Zoe Saldana), Sulu (John Cho) and Spock (Zachary Quinto) are flying around on a hovercraft somewhere else on the same world dealing with an erupting volcano that threatens to destroy everything on the planet (this also happens to be the scene where Spock is wearing the volcano suit that we got to see not only in on-set photos but also the three-frame clip that Abrams brought to Conan last month). It’s an interesting way to re-introduce the characters, as they are seemingly three-quarters through a mission we know very little about, but it’s definitely thrilling and by the end the stakes are so high that you become immediately engaged with what’s going on."

Thoughts? We don't know if this footage will be officially released anytime soon, but we can expect a full trailer for the movie this week.

Healing ability sounds supernatural to me...almost...GOD like ;)

Gary Mitchell?

Khan was a tough guy with heightened reflexes...a "superman" of sorts but certainly possessed no supernatural abilities.

This could be good.., or 90210 pandering. We'll see. Why's Uhura on said planet?

I'm sticking to my guns. Khan aint the villain. But all the Khan buzz certainly helped Abrams with concealing the identity of the TRUE villain since all the khan buzz did was get attention away from who the real villain may actually be.

My real preference is for a guy who hasn't been in a film yet. Time to give other characters their fair shake. Khan had his movie. Time to move on. It isn't fair to give one kid a chance on stage. Then ignore the other little kids.

btw- Nice find Ror!

@dwaynejohnson- He probably IS going to be an original series character but I am actually starting to have my doubts about the ones we've been hearing about. All we ever usually hear about are Khan and Mitchell.

What if it's neither though?

supposedly the news is reporting that european trailers have surfaced and apparently "the main character may die" according to Fox11 in LA.

@Splenda- The healing ability points more at Mitchell than Khan at this point for me. lol

Let's look at the facts here. IF he's Khan then they certainly changed the LOOK of the character- member of starfleet so he's in uniform, white guy who still retains his british accent for the role as heard in the trailer. And with an added ability to heal people possibly...I mean Khan never had any supernatural abilities.

So to change the LOOK of Khan...and the POWERS of Khan...in my opinion, they might as well make him a different or brand new character. Period.

No one will see this guy as Khan. He's too different already. And I don't buy the whole "Khan may be trying to infiltrate Starfleet hence the uniform" angle because even in the synopsis it stated that "unstoppable force of terror from WITHIN THEIR OWN ORGANIZATION" that doesn't strike me as someone who put on a starfleet suit temporarily to infiltrate it. It sounds more like someone who was a real member of Starfleet and someone they really TRUSTED has turned in a huge evil dickhead lol ;P

Hey just a thought. Does this reveal make anyone think that THIS may be why Cumberbatch's character is doing "evil things"?

Cumberbatch said his character isn't clearly good or evil. He had intent and reason behinds the things he does. Maybe he is trying to save that little girl through ANY means necessary. Maybe Starfleet has something to do with her predicament or isn't doing enough to help her?

Idk, i'm just spitballing.

As Thor proved, we go for the best actor: he's Khan or something totally new. He is very confident of his abilities..

Time for Abrams to stop playing coy about this. We're going to figure out who Cumberbatch is eventually. We usually DO on this site. Abrams is simply prolonging the invevitable ;P

No offense to any ST purists, but I actually hope Cumberpatch is a new concept of Khan. Could be worse, eh? Actually we should hope for this. The physicality Cumberbuns desplayed during the chest plant punch was enough of a step from Sherlock to get me onboard(cheese ipun).

We know for sure it's either Gary Mitchell or Khan. As far as the hospital scene goes:

Khan is offering genetic manipulation which will save his daughter.

Or

Gary is offering to heal his daughter with his psychic powers.

He asks, "What would you do to save your family?" In your trailer. Maybe this has something to do with it?

Can't wait for this movie!!!!

Missed your article LP4, but I bet that would be the biggest surprise/disappointment. He's set up to be Khan, but he's something much more. The Klingon sequence, does keep him in a less god-like, but yet powerful appearance.., ahh we'll see. Regardless of who it turns out to be.., despite the hand on glass homage to '82 shots, I hope it's Khan. Who else could do it justice besides Del Toro and he'd rather do coke f*ck people in elevators than work on good material. Way to stand up for you career and people: "..give me the f*ckin' keys!"

Look, Diamond should be making figures and why are they not? Did Playmates not only drop the ball, but last minute use their staple for pre-suicidal gunfire? I have every STNG figure they made and the '09 series was a smack in the face: Galaxy and Warp. Who would not buy Kirk and Crew if they did them up Diamond/Gi Joe Hasbro style in a 1:18 scale capacity? I'm, sorry, but thinkin' about a Spock with the detail of a Hasbro Gi Joe figure.., yeah I'm a dorkus and that's an awesome figure! Make it! You market it to the collector, not projectile missiles and keep the paint jobs better than what my blind cousin could do and I'll buy duplicates! Oh well.

Logan5 - 12/9/2012, 9:50 PM
If it's Mitchell I'll lose it! I always thought he was a no brainer, but had serious potential implecations with what he could do to starfleet.., plus I love 2001 and that actor.

@character assassin

After The Avengers and Coulson's death, you truly enter reality, day to day, thinking Avengers was solid? Pull numbers, but Transformers can pull numbers. Sorry I hate cheesy, unrealistic one-liners. I work for a living and every ignorant ass thinks a one liner is needed in life, so I get plenty of those. :) Also grew up on the worst decade of film to date: the '90's. One-liner shit storm and Alien Resurrection made me literally vomit.., no joke.
