Wonder Woman: 5 of 10 Questions Answered About the NBC Pilot

The Futon Critic has had the opportunity to read the pilot script for David Kelley's Wonder Woman, which will potentially be produced by NBC. They've provided a list of 10 answers to burning questions, of which we present five.

1. What's the main thrust of the show?

Meet Diana Themyscira. By night, Diana fights crime as Wonder Woman, a Los Angeles-based superhero. By day, Diana runs Themyscira Industries, which among other things, sells Wonder Woman-related merchandise to fund her crime-fighting efforts. And since the public knows Diana Themyscira is Wonder Woman, she's recently invented a secret identity, Diana Prince (complete with a Clark Kent-esque disguise involving contact lenses, glasses, pulling her hair back and a housecat named Desi), to allow her a more normal perspective on the world.

2. What does the costume look like? The script only details it as "a colorful spandex suit." It won't be the original, iconic costume though (don't worry, she still keeps it hung in her closet). Despite that look being the company's top seller, Diana insists her current outfit is a tad more appropriate.

3. What about her gadgets? The golden lasso of truth is there, as are her bullet reflecting bracelets. In lieu of an invisible plane (or being able to fly), Diana uses various sedan-sized aircrafts, made by BMW no less ("The Ultimate Air Machine").

4. Who's along for the ride? Henry Demeter, the CEO of Themyscira Industries who harbors a crush on her; Myndi Mayer, Diana's press secretary/best friend; Etta Candy, her cheerful secretary; and Captain Ed Indelicato, Diana's contact at the LAPD; are among the prominent roles, as are "The Animals" (Ryan Miller, Austy Lyne, Jennie Weeks), a trio of techs Diana uses for her evidence analysis. And of course there's Steve Trevor, the government agent who crash landed on Themyscira, home of the mythical Amazons; fell in love with one of them, Diana; and brought her back with him to New York. They've since broken up as Diana now operates out of L.A. and Steve is a lawyer for the Justice Department. That's not to say she's over him (or vice-versa).

5. Who's the main villain? Veronica Cale, head of Cale-Anderson Pharmaceuticals, who despite beauty and success that would rival Diana herself, can't stand our heroine and aims to take her down. Her plan: well, let's just say it involves pharmaceuticals.

so this is probably set to replace the cape,it can't be no worse than smallville.

maybe wonder woman would be better suited for a big screen outing.

Admittedly what we're hearing sounds pretty goofy. Two things to bear in mind: this was an early draft script and, perhaps more importantly, David Kelley makes the most improbable-sounding concepts and characters somehow work and leap off the television screen. Way back when (we're talking '80s/'90s) he did the bizarre but wonderful Picket Fences, which never should have worked, but did - wonderfully - until Kelley stepped away from the show and then it all fell apart. And then there was Ally McBeal which, in the beginning, was an incredibly innovative show. And now, there's Harry's Law, which stars Kathy Bates as a grumpy lawyer with an attitude that sounds goofy, but comes to life amazingly because of the quirkiness of the characters.

I'm in no way saying that I like what I'm hearing so far about his take on Wonder Woman, but given what he's delivered in the past, I'm willing to check this one out and give him the benefit of the doubt.

I want to give it a chance. But when what we hear is THAT bad, that CRAP, then it is very likely to come out just as crappy.

I mean, come on... she has, what, three identities? She sells her own merchandising? Colorful spandex suit?

Please, don't allow me to continue.

@teabag: LMFAO!

She doesnt fly say No more how stupid is that why bother NBC needs to stop butchering good concepts ...look they took a perfect concept in heroes in which they could have been the most awesome hero show and [frick]ed that up so no I have no confidence in the show

Fan4life, you really can't blame NBC for Heroes. They stood behind the show, it was the writing that somehow never managed to match the first 21 episodes of season one.

I was about to apologise for taking liberties when it comes to the spelling of CK's name earlier, I accidentally added an 'e' on the end of Clark...Then I thought to myself, why should I? The liberties that TV productions take with these characters far outweigh my crime...Although maybe we should keep some perspective, it's not like anyone butchered the continuity of the Justice League here.........Oh........wait.....

This sounds horrible. I would love to see wonderwoman done well On the big or small screen. This incarnation sound like a bad mix between Adam West Batman and Halle Berrys Catwoman. Why destroy a charictor that would translate well if they just used the real verson. I mean C'mon.

@ Ed- Funny you say Ally McBeal because that is what I am picturing when reading this. Ally McBeal with bracelets and flying cars.

This sounds like the biggest piece of crap in a long time. The Cape will have outlasted this by many episodes.

I honestly think the networks leak certain info about their shows to the public to gage what the fans think. If they are reading this article they should consider a strong re-write or scrap of this because it has "epic failure" written all over it.
Exiles

why are people blaming NBC there not the ones who came up with the script they just picked it up coz there desperate for ratings, Kelly is the one who came up with the idea so if your going to blame some one the its him, and I couldn't care less about a wonder woman TV show not interested unless they do a big screen version. They can catwoman a solo movie (who knows for what god damn reason) but they can't give one of there best and most recognizable female heroes on the planet a movie, WB/DC have officially lost it. They blew there chance when they passed up wheadons script. This is a early draft so hopefully they change certain things

[frick]ety[frick] this show. Bring on a Kick-ass Wonder Woman movie and get Snyder to direct it, get Monica Bellucci to be Hippolyta and Jessica Biel to be Wonder Woman. Use Joss Whedon's script and the DCUO costume and throw in a little Perez and Simone and you've got yourself a new and phenomonal way of printing out greenbacks!
Shaman
Shaman - 2/2/2011, 7:16 AM
Exiles- But that's the thing, since WW will be hitting TV first, you really should care about the quality of her show. Last thing we'll know is that WB will scratch any movie ideas they have for her on account of how badly her show was recieved. They won't blame it on the highly successful Kelly, they'll blame it on the character! THIS SHOW WILL BE HER DEATH!!!
Exiles
Exiles - 2/2/2011, 7:28 AM
@Shaman hey don't get me wrong I hope this turns out to be good but I see no reason to take a character like wonder woman to TV, I mean there shouldn't be ANY talk of it being on the small screen. It needs to be big budget movie its that simple.
Shaman
Shaman - 2/2/2011, 7:45 AM
Exiles- I totally second your entire comment!!! I'm 110% with you on that! Hell, we already had a great Wannabe Wonder Woman show on tv not too long ago. It was called XENA!!! Now the REAL Wonder Woman has more than what it possibly takes and is more worthy of the big screen than many many other heroes who are actually being concidered for a feature film. GET IT DONE and SCRAP THAT SHOW before it even airs!!!

batfan39 - 2/2/2011, 7:48 AM
So, picture this.... We're going to make a show about Wonder Woman with a few tweaks. We're only going to change her name, costume, powers, mode of transportation and back story. Other than that, it will be true to the comics.

You love it right?

BOO!!!
