Iron Man 3 to be Self-Contained and Play Like a Tom Clancy Thriller; Shane Black to Serve as Writer and Director

Aint It Cool News features a report on the Omaha Film Festival, where writer/director Shane Black was featured and during which he spoke about his career, including his newest gig as the writer/director of Iron Man 3.

According to Black, who announced there that he would be writing as well as directing, he'll be meeting with Robert Downey, Jr. this week, and that Downey will be contributing to the story.

Black pointed out that the studio was not pleased with the direction of Iron Man 2 and that the third film will not be "two men in iron suits fighting each other," but, instead, would play more like a Tom Clancy thriller, with Iron Man's opponents being more real-world than comic book.

Reportedly the film will not feature other Marvel heroes, because the plan is that post-Avengers the various films will focus on individual heroes, and that the crossovers were designed primarily as a lead in to that Joss Whedon-directed film.

Wow - some news to get me excited about this one.

Ironman should always be about near 'future science fiction' in tone with a good dose of thriller/corporate espionage about it.

Always thought the most successful part of the franchise so far is the way Stark approaches terrorism and the sales of his technology. Watching him going behind enemy lines secretively and confronting trouble spots seems to make the most sense to me.

So once they're assembled there are going to be less/no crossovers? What exactly is the point of this connected universe again?

Anyone else noticed how according to Marvel all the "problems" are everyone BUT Marvel's fault? Don't get me wrong, I love the Iron Man films and The Incredible Hulk and have high hopes for Thor and Captain America but some things Marvel say/do annoy me.

Also I really hope there is a villain, not just Iron Man fighting terrorism there is no point in a superhero that isn't posed any real threat in the form of a supervillain.

I'm glad. IMO the best scenes in either of the Iron Man films are the ones in Afghanistan in IM1.
I prefer Stark as a soldier rather than a womanizer

ChesterPhillips, obviously the films were designed to lead in to The Avengers. The point being made was that with that goal accomplished, things would be moving back to self-contained stories.

I really want to see the Bleeding Edge armor. I'm sure they aren't planning on doing more then the trilogy at least with Downey Jr. and I feel like he needs a MAJOR transformation in his tech cause Iron Man 2 lacked that sense of excitement of the first film while Stark was building the Mark 2. Some day I'd love to see Matt Fraction's story arcs on the big screen, Ezekiel Stane baby!

The "studio" IS Marvel. And the problems with Iron Man 2 were about execution, not story. There will be connective tissue to the rest of the Marvel Universe. Black's just starting the process, he doesn't know what he's talking about yet.

i'm not quite sure what to think about iron man 3,self contained is cool but i need to see a proper foe to fight.

1.mandarin & maybe fin fang foom

2.crimson dynamo & titanium man,maybe the cold war

3.armor wars

4.captain america & iron man team up against a.i.m

also thought playing out like a tom clancy thriller might mean s.h.i.e.l.d will be playing a bigger more action role.

its still a shared universe because it'll probably name drop a few times & maybe hint at what might happen in the avengers 2.

The second one didn't work as well because they didn't use the War Machine character to the fullest. I can't pinpoint exactly what else was wrong with it but it definitely lost some "magic" from the first film.

Having said that, i don't think the direction they should go in is more "real world" aka boring villains. I wanted to see the Mandarin in the third one, if you can make him more real-world then fine. No ridiculous costume, and make the 10 rings alien technology or something. But please don't give me another rogue oldtime soviet general or terrorist cell. These are the typical villains in every action film of the past 50 years.

Hate to say I said so, but the Disney take over is gonna ruin everything. No I don't, makes me feel good to be right. Marvel deserves whatever happens. Shame on them for going to all the trouble to break away from Fox only to resell their souls to Disney. Should have stayed independent because thats going against everything that was previously said. Thought the plan was to have three avengers movies with minimal easter eggs in between. And, whats with Black slinging mud? Thought actors/writers/directors had a code that did not critique each others work. Lots of finger pointing going on. Favereau had said earlier that he was dissappointed in the way the movie turned out because the studio had too much involvement in IM2. Making IM into a more Tom Clancy-like thriller with more "real world" villians and less comic book? Hello? It is a comic book character and not Jack Bauer (sorry bro, still rooting for you to be President tho) or Jack Ryan. Mark my words, it's all doomed from here on out.

I call it now - the villains of Iron Man 3 will be AIM. it just makes sense, as a splinter group of hydra - post avengers, it ll be easy to tell their origin story. they ll have some mysterious,powerful leader and then lots of footsoldiers for tony to battle. plus..doesnt that pic below just scream tom clancy in a way?

Ironman ain't Rambo. A whole movie about Ironman vs. Terrorists is like a whole movie about Superman vs. Lex. You can't expect the film to climax by having him hunt down simple terrorists. The hero needs to be somewhat of an underdog or else where's the challenge? How would Nolan's Batman look if all he did was go against corner store robbing teen gangs that weren't led by a maniacle super villain? It could work if there was a super villain leading the terrorists but you still need a solid showdown for the ending.

Shaman@ Dude - that kind of goes without saying. All films end with a climax.

And as for camoes they only work when they are INTEGRAL to the plot - or just add a bit of window dressing to deepen the character of the world.

In IM 2 using Fury as a Deus Ex Machina to point Stark in the right way seemed a weak and easy way to tell the story. It was like they were more interested in advertising The Avengers. However I am sure Marvel Studios learnt ALOT of lesson from making IM2 in that regard and REALLY looking forward to Thor and Captain America. :o)

This sounds like a great idea. Once The Avengers hits, then Marvel will obviously be able to focus on more self contained stories. It really sounds like Shane Black has a good handle on how to Keep this franchise going and still make it his own. There Tom Clancy like direction sounds very intriguing. And for those of you saying that this just means Iron Man fighting terrorists with no real villain in sight, I would remind that many of Iron Man's stories and villains in the comics lend themselves to this approach. There are so ways to go about this. Maybe Black can tie up some of the threads about the Ten Rings and introduce Mandarin with his rings being fueled by more tech than magic or he could bring Eziekel Stane, Mallen, or Spymaster. I'm sure that shield will still play a role in things too. And War Machine as well. It's great having Downey help with the story too because that means we will still get the signature humor from the 1st 2 movies.

Even Tom Clancy Thrillers can be a little over the top. I hope they use A.I.M or at least SHOW the Mandarin as a credible villain.

well... good and bad... i've always thought that manderin was way too much for iron man 3 so i hope they introduce, manderin's secret identity as a friend to tony searching for the manderin rings... i was going to do an editorial on how it should be done but i will say this would be cool if done right... just hope they put at least one creditable villain at the end... and i still want titanium man!

Well I for one am very happy to hear there will be no more guys in armor because even though that works brilliant in the comics, it would get repetitive & annoying if it was in every movie

The same goes for other heroes not being in Iron Man, this is a great idea! Iron Man franchise should be for Iron Man and his particular supporting characters, not every other bloody Marvel character. Does every comic issue of Iron Man need other superheroes from the Marvel Universe to be good, no it doesnt

Although it doesnt mean the other Avengers cant be referenced like the events of the Incredible Hulk were referenced in Iron Man 2. I would like to see other Marvel movies being referenced in newspaper articles or on tv at different points in Iron Man 3, you know little easter eggs that doesnt distract you from the plot just like in the other movies

But the big thing I want to see is Mandarin in Iron Man 3. Just because Favreau left, doesnt mean we should have to lose the Mandarin as a villain

Honestly i do like the sound of this. On villains, its ok that we might get a more real-life villain instead of another guy in armor. By the time this movie come out iron man would have faced 3 villains that were very comic-booky. (the third being from the avengers). I want to see this villain frustrate Stark and figure out a way to break him, possibly pushing him to be a alcoholic lol

And i do like the sound of self contained because i want THOR 2 and CAP 2 to be self contained as well. But that doesn't mean we cant see names in news papers or someone mentioned in dialouge. It needs to go out with a bang!.
