Akira Toriyama left a comment on Dragonball: Evolution before the newest Japanese trailer for the film. ANN translates:

"As the original creator, I had a feeling of “Huh?” upon seeing the screenplay and the character designs, but the director, all the actors, the staff, and the rest are nothing but “ultra” high-caliber people. Maybe the right way for me and all the fans to appreciate it is as a New Dragonball of a different dimension. Perhaps, this might become a great masterpiece of power! Hey, I look forward to it!!"

Man i can't wait for this movie to come out! Why? Cause i can't wait to read something NOT dragonball related on a regular basis. Don't get me wrong, i wanna rent this movie which means it looks kinda good to me. But what are we gonna have next? An article about what Justin Chatwin's parents think about the movie after seeing their son commit himself to such a project? Oh, i can't wait for someone to post up the "dutch" trailor in which they show us a different shade of "orange" for Goku's outfit! Or maybe some highlights in his spiked up hair!

Like an idiot I will probably go see this movie because anything game/comic/anime related I want to see on the big screen. For example I saw Ghost Rider and most recently Push. I recommend Push to be seen when it hits cable. But like I said, I'll be there.

haha i see a trend coming on, first at the start of the millenia, they started milking money by making movies based on comic books, and now the new trend is anime, with this, akira, ghost in the shell, ninja scroll, cowboy bebob, and neon genesis evangelion! another genre for hollywood to milk money out of, but to me..... i have no problem with it as long as there well made

I just hope they stick to the story line. No major story line changes like Rogue & Wolverine, Peter Parker & Mary Jane being his 1st love. What the F....!

Let me translate what Akira said:

"This movie sucks compared to the stuff I did, but I was paid an assload of money for this movie and I get a percentage of the back end net profit of this film as well so I want as many people as possible to go see it so I can maximize my profits."

That's what he said. Or something like that lol:) I'm not a big Dragonball fan but this looks like it will be a good eye-candy movie and that's about it

Goku isn't of Japanese decent; he's an alien.

And I agree with Shaman. There's waaay too many posts on here about this movie. I run a fansite on Frank Miller and I've only posted three articles. There's a bunch of new stuff about him all the time, but I don't post the majority of it because I know that nobody would care.

Man if i ever write a comic book, i would never sell my rights over to the media they'd just butcher it.
TDKR11
TDKR11 - 2/9/2009, 4:08 PM
Akira Toriyama doesn't really care what happens to the movie he doesn't own the rights any more, and he's working on other projects that are more important to him. he's done Dragonball, Dragonball Z, and the end of Dragonball GT, all most 11 years ago, so in his prospective he's been there and done that.

@Fearless Goku was given that name by a person of "japanese type" decent. He is actually an alien and besides the world of dragonball never really put a big emphasis on nationality it was simply "ok hes a human...and hes a saiyan and hes a namek"

this is lame, why can't you people see how horrible this is going to be. am i the last of few conscious people. this movie has the transformers complex. it could be really good, or fail horribly... and from what i've seen, it looks like "master of the flying guillotine". although at least i enjoyed that film...

This movie will fail... Fox knows this....

Or else why would they have an awful official site for the movie? it doesn't have anything. Fox hasn't even bothered to put the trailer on quicktime or itunes... that for me speaks volumes. And the movie is just 2 months from being released.

Have any of you seen the merchandise for this movie? the toyline? the videogame? (a PSP exclusive???) all of them look extremely rushed. The director's last movie was final Destination 3? even Akira Toriyama thought this movie was a failed version of his creation (until fox gave him a check or told him he was breaking his contract so he should shut up, and even then he gave a very diplomatic, non compromising answer). The release is schedualed for a wednesday? when usually new movies are released on fridays. I mean all of this tells me that they know it will suck... they are just trying to have it make the least amount of damage possible (or the most amount of money possible before everyone realizes how bad it really is).

Not only that but... if you look around the big movie/entertainment sites, there is very little mention of this movie, usually all the raving fanboys of the movie are digging for the newest little bit of info (Hey Ror!!! now Piccolo has balls!!! damn you Fox!!! he reproduced by dividing himself, no balls needed there) and trying to convince everyone that this movie will rule by saturating sites with info that no one cares about, trying to get everyone to support the movie they think will redefine the action genre in Hollywood for years to come, and expect everyone to just accept every opinion they have and worship this movie. I for one will not and I still think the newest trailer is terrible and am convinced this movie will fail misserably.

I'm betting the next post is from Doritos telling me to shut up since I'm a hater. If any of you have a different opinion, I'd love to hear it, with arguments, not just saying the trailer looks badass.

im telling ya, the new genre for hollywood to milk out of is anime!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i mean look, their comin out with this, a cowboy bebop movie, akira, steven speilberg's producing a ghost in the shell movie, and theyve long been trying to make a neon genesis evangelion movie!
MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 2/9/2009, 8:36 PM
To be honest im not an anime fan anyway, not that ive seen that many but Akira was the first one i saw and i loved it..so then i watched a good few more and they were just godawful. Its like just because its anime people think its the business. i know this chick who loves it, watches every one of them she can lay her hands on..so i ask her what she sees and them since the story is shite, animation poor and the cast just screaming what passes for dialogue at each other..she says: "but its a cartoon with blood and tits in it"..lol
NoobMike
NoobMike - 2/9/2009, 9:07 PM
lol, ror... like everything there is good anime and bad anime and some people like anime for all the wrong reasons, it's as if since you are a comic book movie fan you'd love every single movie that comes out and when asked why, the reason would be "cause it's based on a comic book, or cause the girls are all hot".

Neon genesis evangelion is cool as hell, although the end is really wack, and anything done by studio Ghibli is just beatiful (specially if done by Hayao Miyazaki, a really good starting point is Nausicaa of the Valley of the wind, Pixar's people are rumored to watch ghibli's films when they have creative block). And go right now and buy Domu (a manga by Katsuhiro Otomo, Akira's creator, which is extremely nerve wrecking in a good way) and the Battle Angel Alita first run (they are like 10 books but well worth it, I think you can preview it at www.mangafox.com) sadly James Cameron is rumored to adapt Alita after his Avatar movie and I don't know how that will go. I also recommend Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo.

Oh yeah sorry noob, i did see one of Miyazakis, the one before howls moving castle i cant remember the name, but i loved that too..maybe im watching the wrong ones. i have heard cowboy bebop is cool too so ill check that out

hey fivebees i saw Push opening day and thought it was pretty interesting, i think w/ a follow up the story could get more interesting. the most amazing part was Dakota Fanning not screaming in the movie like she does in every other movie she is in or being annoying.

Okay guys, anime is THE ONE and ONLY medium which actually gets "GIRLS" interested in "Blood, Tits and Tentacle sex"... And you guys wanna go ON THE RECCORD and protest this...HELLLLOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!! The only thing i have to say about anime is HALELUHIAH!!! Praise the japs! Can i get a "AMEN"?!?!?!?!?!?

Yes, yes joob234, we read you the first time. Why don't we comment on it? Cause it ain't no damn revelation you stumbled upon, it's actually common knowledge.

NoobMike- "If any of you have a different opinion, I'd love to hear it, with arguments, not just saying the trailer looks badass."

I do, i do, i do!!!!! Ehhh...no i don't. And the trailer... yea-no it's not badass at all. I'll just rent it...with a bag of DORITOS!!!!

Fearless- You wanna know what i heard about "Avatar"??? It's written and directed by M. Night Shame-a-lame!!! In a "religion" manner which he says will resemble Star Wars and Matrix and he also considers it his LOTR no less... Right now he's in his bubble of delusion doing "rocket surgery"!!! That's what i heard! In laymen's terms, roughly translated, IT'LL SUCK!!!

Ah im going to wait and see what he delivers..yes The Happening was one of the worst movies i have ever seen, but i actually enjoyed all of his others..yes even Lady In The Water! But of course it may well suck.

Zuko's being played by the kid from Slumdog Millionaire. And he's [frick]in' Indian! I don't think that they should be Asian because the show was made in America and is set in an alternate world but INDIAN! M. Night Shamalan damn you! Lol. It's gonna suck hard.

Just in case you guys haven't heard...
(Wait for the moaning to begin...)
Leonardo Dicrapio's production studio is looking to release live action versions of: Akira, and Ghost in the Shell, as well as a live action Cowboy Bebop film (presently rumored to star Keanu Reeves) that's in the scripting stage (I'm not sure who's producing).

I for one dont care that Goku's white (he can be Black and be played by Chris Rock for all i care) or Piccolo's not green.

I juz hope they deliver the plot properly and not follow DOA and SpeedRacer's footsteps. They should also not mess up the fight scenes and i hope what i saw in the trailer is not all they're offering! The strikes had no impact. The jumping scenes was obviously wirework and had no momentum! They should do what KungFu Hustle did and not Crouching Tiger.

Akira Toriyama said He was not satisfied with Dragon Ball Z cause it was a pain in the ass too do for manga..they completely twisted his view of DBZ and Akira was telling himself at one-point " they can't get more powerful can they? " and during the interview said hopefully down the road in his life he'll make something for him too be proud of...I guess DBZ was not something he chairist?...

Which explains why he couldn't care less for what the movie will end up looking like. I guess it was easy for him to take Fox's money and say "It'll be briliant" with a big sarcastic grin on his face.

It's official, Byatches: Akira Toriyama says to look at it as another dimension and not worry too much about minutia.
Shaman
Shaman - 2/12/2009, 5:52 AM
Roughly translated in laymen's terms: Look at it as "NOT dragonball" but as something totally different but with the same concept which made us fans of the series in the first place.

Hopefully, the "details" will not overshadow the "concept" or else they'll totally loose us! It's not looking too good so far.
JamesH
JamesH - 2/12/2009, 8:58 AM
True that. Akira T probably either cussed a lot or laughed his ass silly in his home a lot before telling that calm comment about watching it as a different dimension.
