I wonder if more than one Dwarf will get actual speaking lines in the 2nd movie. Leaving aside my issues with unnecessary changes from the book, just look at basic fundamentals of movie-making. Out of 13 Dwarves, more than half of them had almost no lines whatsoever. The character development was terrible.

And you can't use the excuse that they'll be fleshed out in the next two movies. Even in a trilogy, the individual movies should each be able to stand on their own legs. Making only 4 or 5 fully-developed characters in the 1st movie and then saving the rest for the other movies is bad editing and just plain lazy. Not to mention that every Dwarf other than Thorin, Balin, and Dwalin are simply there for dumb comic relief. Ugh.

@SauronsBANE1...why continue with your pointless bitching? Do you honestly think you will change anything...now?

@Facade, It's better than just acting like the movie was a resounding commercial and critical success. I'm going to keep beating my drum and hope that others can see the flaws in the movie as well. Obviously my comments on one cbm site won't stop the rest of the movies from being any worse, but if I can get even 1 other fan to see my point, then it's worth it.

Levi never shut up about how bad TASM was (and he's banned now...bad example haha), Grif doesn't hold back from telling others what movies he thinks are crap, and there's countless others who had a movie disappoint them so much that they keep bringing it up when they can. I don't see anything wrong with that.

Oh yeah, please show me more Legolas and Tamriel! Damn, I loved them both in the book, but Tamriel, man, she's like my favourite Tolkien character ever - so glad they got her right and that she's getting the spotlight she deserves!

Where's the Grey Grinch aka Beorn though?

@SauronsBANE1...it was a HUGE commercial success. As for critical success...I liked it...you didn't.

If you're mission is to find one other person who found flaws in it...it's flawed, are you happy now? I still liked it. Does that make you unhappy, now?

GRIF thinks EVERYTHING is "shit" so his opinion isn't worth consideration, so if that's what you aspire to be, well, then go for it. LEVI is banned for a reason...wack job...yet another "character" to aspire to be like?!

If you want your opinion invalidated, get soldiering on, friend...bang your gong!

@sauronsbane - you do realize that only about 3 dwarves in the book had speaking parts too right? Thorin and Balin were about the only dwarves who said anything, but I don't hear you complaining that J.R.R. Tolkien was terrible at character development.

Also, do you have any idea how long the movie would be if it did focus on every single dwarf?? I'm pretty sure I've heard you complain about them making it 3 movies too so how bout you stop contradicting yourself and only cry about one thing at a time.

Grif DOES like things. :D

And I think it's valid to complain about both lack of character development and making it three movies. Maybe there wouldn't be complaints from some fans if they spent time on developing the dwarves instead of giving screentime to characters from different books (or even characters invented just for the movies).

That being said - I'm happy for everyone who enjoys the Hobbit movies! d(^_^)

@Facade, Stick to the facts rather than exaggerating everything. The Hobbit made less money than any LOTR movie so far (adjusted for inflation) and it has extremely mixed reviews by critics. Money-wise? Sure, call it a success. Quality-wise? Hardly. And most people would agree that it's nowhere near the level of the LOTR movies.

And I never said I was "aspiring" to be like Levi or Grif. Obviously you have some odd, extremely strong emotional connection to the movie, but stop exaggerating everything and stop putting words in my mouth.

I'm not criticizing this movie to try and convince closed-minded people like you. You liked it in spite of the flaws, good for you. Other people actually like having intelligent discussions about movies.

@Super 12, Read the book again. Only 3 Dwarves had speaking parts? Not even close to being true.

But I'll humor you. Say that IS true. So Peter Jackson decided to change every other little thing in the book, but when it comes to a so-called 'weakness' in the book, PJ decided "Hey, let's stick as close to the book with this one specific thing as possible!"???

Anyway, if you read my original comment, this was a failure at basic movie-making. It had nothing to do with how it is in the book. How can you possibly have multiple main characters in a movie and have more than half of them without speaking lines??

And nothing I've said contradicts anything I've said in the past. Fleshing out characters doesn't mean you focus on each and every Dwarf. Just give us an idea of each of their personalities. Even a vague idea. PJ didn't even bother doing that. Look at movies like Ocean's 11. That movie wasn't even close to the length of the LOTR movies but we got to know each and every main character in a meaningful way. THAT is how PJ should've done it.
