He's 5'11", can you really see him as 6'3"-6'4" Supes? I can't. But as Kyle Rayner? Yes :)

no Matt Bomer is a really good actor. He comes off arrogant cuz that's what he's been cast as (see White Collar) He's actually really likeable.... he looks like Superman... in the face only. too scrawny.

in what way did he seem douchy?

I sensed no Douchery. Yes; I invented a word. It's like chicanery, but with more Summer's Eve freshness.

However, "The Rat's" every breath exudes douchery of the highest order. He may as well spout saline when he speaks.

Tyler I never get your height thing. As long as the actor is taller than his leading lady, anyone can be made to seem taller on film. Hell, Michael Clark Duncan walked around on a little platform in the Green Mile, simple as that. Lots of simple ways to mediate the vertically challenged actor's dilemma out there. And don’t forget in comics the baddies are almost always bigger than the heroes anyway.

I do agree that Bomer wouldn't have been the best Supes though, but height isn't the reason.

nero: Well, I don't mind if it's a few inches, but going from 5'11" to 6'4" is a pretty big feat. And if he was Supes you'd have to get someone about 5'9 for Batman, Flash, and so on and so forth. Superman needs to be a naturally commanding and imposing presence, Bomer just doesn't have that commanding aura and physical stature.

But his height isn't the only reason. His relatively small build (small but very defined) wouldn't look good if he was made to be 6'4". It would look odd. His overall body shape just doesn't lend itself well to a character of Superman's figure IMO.

If they could pull it off and make him look convincing as 6'4" Superman, I don't think I'd mind it, because he is a very talented actor.

Multi: I'd have to see him with blond hair first, but he is actually a very interesting possibility for Cap. He's talented, square-jawed, well-built, and has a good 1940's handsome look to him. I'm liking the idea more and more by the second.

Man, I sure am glad this movie didn't get made!
Not because of Bomer because I despise Rat-turd!

Bomer is just not right for Superman, though, for
all the reasons Tyler@ gave! But he can play almost
any superhero as long as it ain't Supes or Thor
or someone of big stature, he's that good!

Just watched him on White Collar and he is making
that show! Him and the actor who's playing the FBI
detective who's in-charge of his master-thief
character. I wouldn't mind him playing Cap America
at all!
DDD
DDD - 1/27/2010, 12:29 AM
Routh needs to be Superman! There is no one else I can think
who could really fill those red boots! He's the
epitome of Clark Kent/Superman! If they could just give him a
great script he would shine!!! He is shining on
Chuck!

you know, this guy might really make a great Captain America. he really does have a lot of the aspects of Cap to him and I see the potential with him standing side by side with RDJ and CH in the avengers also.

If you have seen him on chuck you know how commanding he can be, great action. I would like to see him in another film, testing his acting chops but I will say he definintely can become a great Captain America, he has that potential

Bomer is a good choice for Cap. I think he could pull off dirty blonde hair. But he should beef up and i'm not talking broth, i'm talking CHUNKY!!!

@DDD- dude, White Collar is just one of those shows that brings me and my dad together. Like ER did for my mom and I. It was OUR show. Then when I went to college, it ended. (kinda coincidental lol) Same with Southland for my dad and I, but it got canned (for now :)) so we decided to watch White Collar cuz I'm going to be going into the FBI or US Marshal Service soon. It is a great way to bond. lol

Having said that, Bomer is a really good actor. you're right DDD, he does make that show as does the FBI agent, Peter Burke (played by Tim DeKay in case anyone wanted to know :P) He's very charismatic but he can come off as arrogant. He has the head/face for supes but lacks the mass on his body. He could bulk up but he would want to lose it before doing anything else.
BIGBMH
BIGBMH - 1/27/2010, 9:40 AM
He's actually one of my top picks for Superman. I didn't even know that there was a time when he almost really played him.
Update: I looked it up, and he actually played Superman in some Japanese Prius commercials. They're a bit cheesy and don't really show him in the suit, but I think they show that if he bulked up he really had potential.

*Shudder* Superman movie directed by Bratner *shudder* Although on the otherhand, maybe Bratner could have [frick]ed up Superman instead & Singer could have made X3 which might have been better with Emma Frost as the villain and Angel might not have been in it (therefore excluding Emma from the X-Men First Class prequel and making it closer to the original five with the inclusion of Angel as he would not have been in X3)

I thought Routh was great as Superman and even better as Clark Kent. I'd love to see him get another shot especially now that he's got a few more years experience under his cape.

Face wise I could really see him as Supes, I don't watch White Collar, but every time I've seen a commercial for it since I first read someone fancast him as Supes I see Superman in his face. BUT he is just too lean, for him to bulk up enough to be believable as Supes and not just a guy in pajamas he would need an IV of HGH, and designer steroids that don't even exist yet, no amount of gym time would allow him to bulk up enough to play Superman.
NERO
NERO - 1/27/2010, 9:26 PM
@ NGU13. I can tell you're new to comics, because a "darker" Superman is an absolutely HATED idea by most comic fans. Look at it this way: The DC heroes represent the Greek pantheon of Gods. Each god has his domain, each god has his theme. Batman is Hades on that sliding scale and Gotham is Tartarus. It is dark and corrupted, and Batman carries that in his persona. Superman is Zeus; His domain is Mt. Olympus itself. Superman is majesty and light, Metropolis is a shining beacon of what a city should be. They are the farthest apart on the scale. Both with codes of honor and lines they will not cross, but Batman will do what he has to to get the job done. Superman will take the most moral and just route, the fact that his powers allow him a luxury that Bats does not have only allows that further. Batman will be knee deep in sickos, psychos, rapists, a freaks while Superman is saving the world from an alien invasion, or fighting a giant robot, or stopping conflicts... He handles these almost sanitized things that no one else can. He has that luxury because Batman is knee deep in human filth and mire. That difference in perspective is why Batman is dark and Superman is not. Batman strikes fear even into the people he protects. Superman is a shining light of hope to his.

If you want to write a script and make a new Superman, that’s great. But I can tell you now you make Superman "dark" and not only will it tank because even a three year old knows the character is not meant to be, but you will be a pariah amongst fans of the comics.

Just warning you... Dark Superman = HORRIBLE IDEA.

Do some more research until you get a feel for the character as he is as established by the better part of a century that he has been around. He exists to fanboys. You go changing the wheel, meaning; you alter the character to parameters you set rather than writing your story to fit the character as he is and you will be in a bad way.
