Twilight Saga: Eclipse VS The Last Airbender

Twilight Saga: Eclipse VS The Last Airbender

It's the epic showdown of the summer. Who will reign supreme in the box office? It's sparkling vampires vs the master of the elements all for the love of tweens!

Tomorrow marks another day in tween history: the release of another Twilight film. The Twilight films are based off of the world wide best selling novels by Stephanie Meyer whose success story was rocket fast in the world of publishing. When the films came to be movies, they launched an obsession for tweens, despite Twilight being classified as young adult fiction.

Twilight was only rated so-so if not down right hated in the eyes of many fans, but many of them considered the sequel New Moon to have delivered. With the introduction to the Bella/Edward/and often shirtless Jacob triangle as well as some additional fight scenes that were not in the books (but really helped the film), it was actually a good movie (if you didn’t mind Bella screaming and crying in her sleep for half of the film). New Moon actually debuted with the number one opening day gross ever with over seventy-two million dollars surpassing the Harry Potters, Spiderman 3, Transformers 2, and even the beloved Dark Knight.

But New Moon is easily the favorite book from the Twilight series, so can Eclipse outperform it’s predecessor?

My money is on “probably”. It’s main promotion is for it’s vampire and werewolf war drawing in people who may not care about romance and may not know it’s a romance, but they like seeing things fighting and killing each other. Also, young Jacob actually gets up the nerve to fight for young Bella’s affection instead of staring at her intensely and waiting for her to lean in and kiss him. Edward doesn’t disappear for half the film either so it’s a full on fight for Bella’s love.

If I were a film maker, I wouldn’t put up anything against the power of little girls who beg their mommies to take them to the theaters so they can stare at men too old for them and cry over situations they’re too young to understand. But M. Night Shyamalan has proved to take risks creatively with some of his work. It’s no shocker that he’s taking a risk and putting The Last Airbender on the line against a major contender.

The Last Airbender–known to many as “The REAL Avatar” (sorry Cameron), are looking forward to this highly anticipated film. The Last Airbender is based off of a hugely successful cartoon created by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko that aired on Nickeloden and attracted an audience well beyond it’s demographic with it’s brilliant story telling and serious subject manner. It’s easily one of the greatest cartoons of all time. Avatar: The Last Airbender isn’t a love story, though there is romance. It’s a story about young kids with powers who have to fight a world wide war to save the world from a truly evil man and his army. The premise sounds more epic than a random small town girl deciding whether or not she wants to give up her non-interesting life to turn into a good vampire. The show is still very fresh in the fans minds and they were desperate for more stories. So who will win the tween vote?

The Last Airbender has been surrounded with some controversy. Two main characters, Sokka and Katara, are brown skinned in the television series but are being cast by two Caucasians, one of them who plays Jasper Hale in the Twilight series. Another controversy comes from the villain and eventual good guy, Zuko, who is a fair skinned character yet is cast by a boy of Indian descent, Dev Patel, who is best known for Academy Award-winning film Slumdog Millionaire. While no one is questioning their acting ability, fans of many different nationalities are angered by the race changes and even coined the term “race bending.”

But even with that going against the film, the previews themselves are compelling the fans to give it a shot. Besides the obvious nationality changes, the film mirrors the source material in a lot of ways and the special effects are down right cool.

With Last Airbender coming out in 3D, it also has a chance to outdo Eclipse in sales due to 3D prices being a bit higher, which is how Cameron’s Avatar made it’s groundbreaking amount at the box office.

Eclipse may have two successful films backing it, but The Last Airbender appears to be a film that moms and highly testosterone filled dads will take their kids to see. Besides, with Twilight films subject matter becoming increasingly more adult, such as the eventual impregnation of Bella in Breaking Dawn, the eight year old girls might have to start sitting out of the shows.

So who is going to win the epic battle for biggest movie of the summer? We’ll see this weekend. Twilight Saga: Eclipse premiers June 30th and The Last Airbender premiers July 1st.

this is truly a battle of vastly different films. You got the freaking horde that is the twihards...and you got the kids and fans of the show plus the 3D gimmick...This entire summer has been very odd when it comes to releases. So many things our coming out together on the same dates and it really messes with all the studios. Like Hex vs Toy Story 3...WHY DO THAT!!!!...Look at next week, we have Despicable Me vs Predators, then Sorcerers Apprentice vs Inception, are all these studios crazy? Same can be said near the end of the summer with Scott Pilgrim vs Expendables. Alot of these films could have done BETTER in the spring or Fall rather than packing them all together and hoping one outweighs the other. I will see Last Airbender when I get the chance

Technically, Airbender had this release date before Eclipse did because New Moon didnt even come out at the time A) the teaser for Airbender was shown during Transformers LAST SUMMER and B) Eclipse didnt announce its release date till this past JANUARY.

Twilight will make more money but get panned by the critics, cause tween girls are too stupid to realize that this movie is garbage and wont till they get to be 50 years old.

Airbender has already gotten better reviews and I expect it to do what Sherlock Holmes did, finishing second to Avatar (the week after Avatar came out) and yet still makes a lot of money.

Dont forget, The Blind Side opened the same weekend as New Moon and still got 200 million dollar cause of the great word of mouth, and I think Airbender will get the Word of Mouth spread well.

Remember, Blind Side was well recieved by critics and Sandra Bullock walked away with just about every major acting award including the Oscar.

@clay...little girls and creepy soccer moms are the target demographic, whereas Last Airbender has an overall demographic..sadly the Twilight movie will do well...I'm hoping it does tank horribly...like it doesnt make its estimated mark. I hate hearing its the "best" of the three....THATS NOT A COMPLIMENT, the other two are so god awful that this one seems better...that reminds me of another film...oh yeah EPISODE 3 of the New trilogy

@aki, just wait till they do the 2 part Breaking Dawn, hehe that is literally bat$hit crazy, especially the extreme pedophilia that happens in Breaking Dawn.

If I was dating a girl and she said Lets go See Twilight, no can do and I would dump her on the spot cause I wouldnt be putting up with that, luckily I dont have to

To be honest, I never watched the Airbender cartoon, but it looks crazy cool. I was hoping for a midnight showing but all the theaters close to me that are doing midnight showings have it in 3D (AARRGGHH) gotta wait till Thursday NIght to see it then my review will be up on Friday.

I don't think Twilight is necessarily bad...Certainly they could be better but that's not so much the movie's fault. The books move really slow so it's difficult to properly translate it into film, at least for the first movie. New Moon wasn't that bad, even though I easily could have cut out a half hour and Bella looked like she belonged in a mental institution. I do plan on taking my little sisters to see it tomorrow and I'm interested to see the battle HOWEVER, I think it's pretty stupid that the good guys suffer no casualties, especially when the new born vampires are supposed to be stronger and more violent.

I also take joy in watching the team Jacob kids cry. They're such idiots.

I'm against race bending as far as Avatar goes but I LOVED the cartoon and the epicness of the previews has convinced me to keep an open mind. I'll see that opening day as well.

@gorgeousgeeks, Wait till 'Team Jacob' sees that Jacob becomes the biggest pedophile in the history of the world by falling in love with Douchebag and Dumb Girls baby, and especially when Edward bites her open to C-Section the baby out. I would think these books would have led to some duel between Edward and Jacob over Bella, but no in the biggest plot twist ever in literature (sarcasm btw) it ends with Jacob falling in love with a newborn baby, WTFH is going on here.

ok an epic ending is like Luke vs Vadar, or what we have coming up with Harry Potter where he duels with Lord Voldmore, and you see that in the trailer.

How in the world are they going to put the C-Section and pedophile scene on screen without it being laughably insane?

unfortunately Twilight will make more money, but Airbender should hold its own just fine. I guess girls can't help liking these Twilight movies for the same reasons guys like porn. They are all just fantasies of things we wish were real but will never come true :-P
claybo4131
claybo4131 - 6/29/2010, 1:37 PM
@mclovin Porn is more enjoyable then Twilight LOL at least they have sex in Porn and Twilight Edward is so dumb to have sex.

@taboo Im not all that, wow I didnt know this was a looks contest, I guess what you really are saying is I am too old for you anyways. Yeah ive been known to be a harda$$ when it comes to dating, including dumping a girl on a date cause she lit up a cigarette, to many things. BTW I am calling all the Twihards dumb because they are dreaming of a fantasy that will never come true.

Here is my point, women are more stupid about celebs than guys are. Case in point, especially teenage girls whose hormones are raving, hear me out. Right now who do they pea their pants over, Twilight stars and Justin Bieber. Who have they lost control over in the past, NSYNC, Backstreet Boys, Ricky Martin (whom I have actually seen a girl run up to Ricky Martin, MOON HIM and actually ask him to sign her a$$, and he reluctanley did) Hanson, and many others. It even goes back to the days of The Beatles, Elvis and James Dean. Look it up it is true. How many magazines are out there targeted to teen girls more than guys, MANY, How many magazines are targeted to women more than Men, Id say it is easily 3 to 1 at minimum.

My point is women act foolishly over stuff like this than guys do. When was the last time you saw a guy act like a teenage girl does when she sees Robert Pattinson? I have actually seen a teen girl have an orgasm after she met one of the guys from Avalon after a concert, she was so out of control 3 police officers had to pull her away. What does a guy say when he sees a hot celeb chick, he just plain says DAMN and thats it, women lose their minds over these teen hearthrobs.

(NOTE before you guys ask Clay What were you doing at a Ricky Martin concert, it wasn't a full blown concert, it was a radio station concert that had multiple artists there, I know some of the DJ's at the station and they gave me tickets and backstage passes to the show and I brought my girlfriend I had at the time to the show so she could meet Jessica Simpson, i was being the nice boyfriend. P Diddy was there as well so I got to meet him so it all evened out)

@taboo I get called lots of names, whats the old saying sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me (unless you hit me in the head with a dictionary that might) if you called me ugly so what I dont care, ive been called worse by other people.

I was getting at the fact that Teen Girls go gaga over this stuff, which to me I dont understand, The movie has no plot, all it is is pretty people taking their shirts off and it has the worst ending to a literary series in the history of mankind. And what is worse is teen girls peititioned my old high school to get Twilight as required reading, and they got enough signatures according to the handbook and got it passed, which leads me to believe what is going on here with this series. There really is no story, what girls wish is to be Bella, where 2 pretty boys are fighting over you for your affection

You think I hate Twilight, well watch a combination of Peter Rallis and his hatred of Twilight My favorite one starts at the 3:10 mark

And once again his ever so famous description of Breaking Dawn starts at the 1:44 mark

@Taboo13 Are you 8 years old? If you are and you're a Jacob devout worshiper, then yeah, you're an idiot. If you're a proper age to be watching the film, then you're a respectable audience member.

Why I really refer to them as idiots is because they are so into the film and then with the "cliff hanger" when Edward asks Bella to marry him they all gasp like they don't know what's gonna happen. So what do I do? I decide to be a jerk and yell out "She says yes!" It's gross that there are kids younger than ten in the film pinning after these adults. I find it sickening that little girls ask Rob to bite their necks. Yes it's also weird when Tyra Banks asks, but little girls should really not even be in there.

And I will want to slap parents if I see them bring their kids into Breaking Dawn.

And I'm not a fan of the books. I read the first one to study it. I couldn't get through the second one but I'm interested in the franchise because it's successful. So I know stuff and I don't get all of the twihards who despise Eward because he left Bella to protect her. I don't get the hostility towards Edward for being dark and twisted in Breaking Dawn when Jacob spent a majority of the book trying to figure out how to kill Bella's baby and then was going to kill it after it was born until he peed on it. Oops. I mean imprinted.

Taylor's nice to look at, but I don't get it. Jacob spent New Moon inches away from Bella's lips hoping that she would kiss him. A real man just takes a woman and plants one on her. What's with all the angst? By the time he mans up in Eclipse, she's no longer single. Then he runs away in Breaking Dawn because he's so heart broken and nothing is ever fine again until he predictably imprints on the baby.

But even after saying all of this, I don't dislike any of the characters or even the film themselves. I just have some criticism like anyone really should.
gorgeousgeeks
gorgeousgeeks - 6/29/2010, 3:02 PM
Just about all of these girls can identify with Bella. Bella's a normal person with faults. She's not super perfect or abnormally strange and intriguing like we usually like to read about.

Think of it as this way: imagine reading a fanfiction and then someone puts their original character into the story and makes them make out with everyone and interact with the real characters. That's kind of like Bella. Bella is the ultimate fan girl placed into a supernatural story. She's not meant to have a lot of depth. That's how she relates to girls. She's a canvas. You can be Bella. That's how she acts as the avatar for all of the fan girls that pick up the book and read it. That's why when Edward broke up with Bella, my sister cried and said if felt like he was breaking up with her. That's why they get so intensely involved into the romance of the characters. They were there because they became Bella.

Now I don't think Stephanie Meyer meant for Bella to be so one dimensional, but she is. I mean besides the fact that Bella is clumsy, what more is there besides the fact that she's in love with Edward and wants to be with him forever?

And for the girls that really enjoyed the book and identified with her and found her lack of perfection to be perfect, all of that goes down the drain when she becomes a vampire. She's not clumsy not anything. He old rusty car died. She drives Ed's cars. She doesn't even have much trouble adjusting to being a vampire. She controls herself during hunting she masters her super vampire powers, lives happily for forever with her husband, and doesn't even have to worry about that pesky Jacob because he's gonna be with her baby. She doesn't even have to hire a sitter. Everything just comes together.

So the thing that girls liked about Bella that they could "relate to" is gone. But what do they care? They get to vicariously live through Bella and be with Edward forever.
gorgeousgeeks
gorgeousgeeks - 6/29/2010, 3:24 PM
@Taboo First of all, you said you were over 8 years old, so I don't see how we have a problem. And if you're under 12, I don't even think you're supposed to have an email, so you shouldn't even be on this site. So if you're actually a teenager, then enjoy your Twilight films. But really, young adult books are for 14-21 year old kids. So yeah, I'm kind of weirded out and grossed out by mothers who can't take the time to read a summary about what their kids are watching and since Breaking Dawn might have a sex scene that Rob and Kristen kind of would prefer in there, I don't want to see kids younger than 10 in the theater, which there were a lot of in New Moon.

Second, I don't have beef with you or your mom and I never said I WOULD slap anyone's mom. I'd think they'd deserve it, but since I'm not a crazy person, I wouldn't. If you're gonna respond to my comments, then read them all the way through. And for the record, unless your mom has an Adam's apple and really big hands, I doubt she could take me. But once again, I don't want to fight your mom. Calm down, hun. It's not that serious.

And Third, adults have discussions. If we have opposing view points, we argue until one of us either wins the other over or we agree to disagree. All of my points were valid.

And don't talk to me like you're a little delinquent that can do something. What would you do if we weren't talking over the internet? Would you shoot me? Would you throw a punch? Why are you so angry? We're talking about fiction! It's a fictional book that's not even that old and not even that good! I didn't call you an idiot. I didn't even call all Jacob fans in general idiots.

This is why people like to talk about Twilight and bash their fans because they get so defensive. It really shows a lack of maturity. You remind me of a little Miley Cyrus fan who got all mad because I said she was a tramp. This blind worship is insane.

Some of these people leaving comments have really no idea what Twilight is and just despise it because they think little fangirls are dumb. I actually know about it. My statements are relevant and true. You can either debate them like an adult or throw a hissy fit like a little baby, which is exactly what you're doing.

You could have said "Yeah Jacob does do that and I get your point, but I like him because blah blah blah." Make an intelligent statement. And now I am insulting you because you are being an idiot. I'm not saying you are an idiot, but stop acting like one. Make a valid argument. You don't have to throw your hands up, get angry, and lose just because there are obviously a lot of older people against you.

I'm not really trying to tell you off. I'm challenging you and hoping you learn something. Fight back intelligently. Nothing is better than beating an adult with intelligence.

I'm gonna be nice and defend some Twihards.

THIS IS WHY I SOMEWHAT LIKED TWILIGHT

(The movie, the book was too long. She didn't even guess they were vampires until like chapter 10)

Okay, a lot of people didn't really like Rob as Edward. He was supposed to be more charming, sexy, and dangerous or that's at least how girls imagined him. Rob was a bit awkward. I kind of thought it was charming, funny, and cute the way he acted in front of her. I thought some parts were funny. It wasn't hysterical or anything. Some of the shots were nice. I thought the vampires getting together and playing baseball was interesting...I'm kind of having a hard time. Hmm...It was an okay movie that I don't have to see ever again. I think the thing I enjoyed most was that my little sisters liked it and I got to take them to the movies to see something that they enjoyed.

New Moon had more action which was better but sometimes Bella's depression was just too much. What I did like though was that no one babied her and said "Oh, you poor thing! You cry it out. You take your time!" No. Her dad said "You're freaking me out!" New Moon was alright. It was long and slow in a lot of places though.

I think some mistakes they make though is that they don't accent some actual interesting things. Like in Twilight, they didn't bother to explain Carlisle's past, who formed the Cullen family and he actually had an interesting back story. His father was a strict religious man who was into witch hunts and stuff like that. Carlisle was going after a vampire and ended up turning into one but he wanted to be a good person and help people so he controlled his cravings and became a doctor. Why not include that? It would have added a little bit more depth to the story. And it explains the whole soul argument to being a vampire and how it's relevant to the Cullen family and why he and Edward believe what they believe.

And in New Moon, Bella was having these terrible dreams and everyone who didn't read the book probably thought she was having Edward withdraw but she was really having these intense nightmares about vampires attacking her. That would have made her look 1000 times less insane. Why not put that in there!

But at least they added some more action.

Eclipse will probably end up being the best film though.

Am I surprised a large amount of people have bad taste? Not at all. This is why Fox and other bad movies succeed.

I just hope Last Airbender turns out good and makes what it deserves.

For what it's worth, the newest Twilight is getting better reviews than its previous movies. Looks like the new director, David Slade, turned things around. He directed Hard Candy, good movie with Ellen Page and Patrick Wilson. But, I'd still rather watch True Blood than Twilight.

@fanboiii I tried to watch True Blood ONCE. Too much sexual content for my taste. Vampire Diaries is what's up and those books came out before Twilight did. It's the best thing on the CW right now.

@gorgeousgeeks I like vampires like in Interview With a Vampire. Ruthless, violent, sometimes perverse but also with a sense of nobility.

Never heard of Dark Shadows but it sounds interesting. My mom was really into vampires too. Have you seen the British show Being Human? It's drama/comedy about a vampire, a werewolf, and a ghost living together.

It's cool to see you girls on CBM by the way! I remember I saw one of your Youtube vids.

I've never seen Being Human. It sounds interesting. My mom isn't a fan of Tim Burton so she's scared that he'll make Dark Shadows weird, but it was the show back in the day. I'd say it was really ground breaking as far as supernatural TV shows. It actually aired before Interview with the Vampire was even written. There's ghosts, werewolves, zombies, monsters, and a bunch of stuff. I hope my mom feels it does justice but I'm a fan of Burton.

@flames809 I wrote this article because people are curious to see who would take the box office. They'll both do fine. I think it's interesting though because I wouldn't have put anything against Twilight, but we'll see how Avatar does. I'm very curious. I adored the show.

I never said I disliked Twilight at all. I've got a lot of criticism for it, but I'm interested in it because it's hugely successful and so I see it as a study piece.

And the content is getting more adult for the wee little kids I saw watching New Moon. I don't think I saw anyone younger than middle school age when I went this morning to see Eclipse, so I felt a little better. But it's not just the sex...the whole content of Breaking Dawn gets weird. From what I know (cuz I don't read sex scenes) Bella and Edward like have some freaky stuff and then she's got bruises all over her body and he has to bite a pillow and then she's pregnant and his feelings and Jacob's feelings towards the baby are intensely hateful until Edward figures out that the baby isn't purposely trying to kill her but Jacob still wants to kill it after it's born and then Jacob ends up imprinting on the baby and it's his soulmate...I happen to believe it's a bit much for some of the kids I see in the theaters.

But then again, I know they know that tweens love their stuff, so I don't know if they'd polarize their audience. I just walked a vampire and werewolf war and it wasn't even a dark film at all.

Parents can take their kids to see whatever they want, but I believe parents should censor certain things. That's my personal opinion and my parents raised some great kids, so I know sheltering some stuff works.
