The Skrulls are an evil alien race with a very long history in Marvel Comics. While the shapeshifting aliens are best known as enemies of the Fantastic Four, they've had several run-ins with the Avengers as well, most notably in the 2008 Marvel Comics event 'Secret Invasion', where the shapeshifters were secretly replacing heroes in order to take over Earth.
It's long been assumed that the film rights to the Skrulls lay with 20th Century Fox, given their origins with the Fantastic Four, and their absence from the 2012 Avengers film (with the Chitauri being used in their stead) seemed to confirm that. However, in a new post on Twitter, Guardians Of The Galaxy director James Gunn has seemingly confirmed that the film rights to the aliens are actually shared between Fox and Marvel Studios; "Some specific Skrulls are at Fox," said Gunn. "But the Skrulls as a whole are co-owned."
The "specific" Skrulls Gunn refers to would not doubt include the "Super Skrull", who possesses the powers of the Fantastic Four. With this is mind, it's entirely possible we could see an adaptation of 'Secret Invasion' down the line. Do you want to see the Skrulls make the jump into a Marvel Studios film? Sound off below!
