Fox's Possible Contingency Plans if Fantastic Four Flops before handing Rights back to Marvel

Speculating what kind of contingency plans Fox would have if the Josh Trank reboot ends up a box office disaster? Could they actually do another reboot or even push for a forced X-Men crossover?

Fox has already announced plans for a Fantastic Four sequel in July 2017. If this sequel were indeed to happen, Badass Digest speculates the possible time Marvel would get the rights back won't be until around 2022.

But not so fast, they also surmise possible scenarios of what would happen if the current Fantastic Four film set to be released this year ends up fizzling out in the box office.

With the latest news that studio bosses in Fox weren't happy, and that the Josh Trank helmed reboot will be rebuilding their sets for a reshoot in Louisana, here are some potential contingency plans Fox may conceive, before they think about handing the rights back to Marvel.

One concept suggests that if the first film doesn't do so well, Fox will likely hang on to the cast and make a do-over movie. Whether that "do-over" means a complete reboot, a soft reboot, or basically a sequel that addresses the first film's flaws, the original cast may likely be back either way.

Fast forward two years - if the next film, the one slated for July 2017, doesn't fare so well either, Fox will probably give it an X-Men crossover in a last ditch effort to make back some money. In other words, we could see the Fantastic Four forcibly show up in an upcoming X-Men film. This isn't really inconceivable seeing as how Fantastic Four screenwriter Simon Kinberg himself had toyed with the idea. How this effects the future X-Men franchises like X-Men Apocalypse, Deadpool, and Gambit will be all left to the imagination. I'm sure the last thing Fox would want to do is convolute their newly resurrected X-Men brand by forcing an unsuccessful Fantastic Four brand onto it.

Does neither contingency plan sound appealing? Well...

The only plan Fox may NOT have a contingency for, is if the first Fantastic Four film just completely flops in a "PLUTO NASH" level disaster (a reference to the 2002 Eddie Murphy film that only made $7 million on a $100 million budget). In this case, Fox will likely just have the rights expire, or strike a deal with Marvel, either way reverting the Fantastic Four back home to Marvel much sooner than later.

So there you have it. The types of scenarios Fox could be facing if the box office number of their Fantastic Four reboot flops or simply wasn't up to their expectations.

Although I'd love to see F4 come back to Marvel, all these F4 rumours sound like total hog wash.

I hope the movies great but no one watches it so it can go back to Marvel... Sort of a win-win situation.

None of this sounds true, I will never trust Badassdigest out of principle and the one about fox not being happy comes from the same guy that said Josh Trank wasn't directing the film, which was debunked to hell

This is a rumor with no base to stand on.

This isn't even a scoop though. It's just the guy from that site using common sense and prior examples as a guide for what Fox might do in the future with Fantastic Four.

I swear, the random bias you guys have against Badass Digest and Devin Faraci is reaching crazy levels of weirdness.

I'm going to reserve my judgement until the trailer comes out.

It's been nothing but bad bad bad news and media buzzing about this movie. But the main point here.. is "buzz". There is a LOT of buzz surrounding this movie.

It wouldn't shock me to see this movie make bank.. Transformers is constantly a let down yet people keep seeing it. Sequel after sequel, they keep going and keep saying the same thing. I'm not saying that the FF has anywhere near the amount of publicity and popularity of Transformers. BUT.. if GI-Joe can make money.. a good enough trailer, and all this "it's horribly bad" buzz.. could propel this movie.

When push comes to shove.. International sales will save them in the box office.

Sometimes bad buzz.. makes a movie a success.

This movie can't possibly be worse then MIB 3, Jonah Hex, or R.I.P.D ... or can it?

So what you're saying is that it'll never go back to Marvel Studios? Ok then, I shall abandon all hope and look forward to these movies then. Let's face it guys, FOX got these properties fair and square and it looks like they'll never give either of them back in a long, long time.

Pretty good answer mate.

IronPunk - Oh right, I forgot about Daredevil. But at that point, Fox had the choice of either losing Daredevil or Fantastic Four. This time however, they only have the choice of losing Fantastic Four and I don't think Marvel has any cards to play in that one.

X-men is already too convoluted post DOFP, and now with young jean, scott and storm (all seen in early high school in cameos in first class, but now for some reason are only in their teens in the early 80s) just makes it more convoluted.
