Ultimate Spider-Man Changes.

Ultimate Spider-Man Changes.

I'm appalled for being a nerd.

As I look out at my fellow nerds, geeks, and fanboys, I must say, I am appalled. A few days ago, the identity of the new Ultimate Spider-Man was revealed. Immediately everyone cried Marvel was trying to be PC and that it was racist and that it was a terrible idea. Here are a few facts.

1. They announced that this would happen.
When the Death of Spider-man was announced, they said that Peter would die and that someone new would take over the mantle. Everyone thinking that they know how comic deaths work immediately assumed they were right and knew peter would "live" in some way. Well guess what? Not only were they wrong but they were really wrong. Peter died a heroic death and it was a good story.

2. It's not Politically Correct, it's Statistically correct.

I'm actually half black and I'm from New York. Born and lived there for quite some time and I can verify that New York is a very diverse city filled with people of all ethnicity so if anything a half black/ half latino Spider-Man is not a big shock.

3. Marvel has no reason to appeal to a Black demographic.

Brian Bendis has two black daughters and the Marvel editor in Chief is part Latino. Marvel has a pretty good about of African American hereoes. Misty Knight, Luke Cage, Black Panther, Blade, etc so they have no need to appeal to the black demographic. Marvel even created the first Black Superhero!

4. He's not gay. Not that there is a problem with that.

Going back to the new York thing for a moment, New York in addition to a diverse group of ethnicity's also has a diverse group of gays, lesbians, and bi sexuals. A spokesperson for Marvel Comics confirmed to ICv2 unequivocally that “Miles Morales isn’t gay.” What's the problem with him being gay anyway? We live in a world where same sex marriage is legalized in some states so why not accept a major superhero being gay? Also Marvel also created the first openly gay Superhero. Northstar.

My biggest problem is that everyone is making a big deal out of nothing. So what if he's black, white, latino, gay straight, or anything? At the end of the day, this is still about a kid being a good person. A kid being a good person, taking over the mantle of another good person. The issue that explains his entire history is not out yet, and I will definitely buy the issue because I want to see what will happen with a new character. Spider-Man, like most Heroes is a legacy character. Look at history at when a hero replaces another. Dick Grayson becoming Batman, Bucky Barnes becoming Captain America, and The Multiple Robins. The racism that I've read is ridiculous. We are so much better then this. It's even worse that so many of us complain that story's are becoming repetitive and that there is no variation, and he is one and we shun at it in favor of more of the same old. The new Ultimate Spider-Man is black. That's pretty cool and I hope to some kids and adults, that doesn't even matter.

Personally I think if they want more diversity that they should create new heroes because they are going to loose some fans when they get rid of established characters that people know and love .

We know he isn't gay because his suit isn't pink. I have nothing against gays but I don't want my superheroes being gay it just seems not right to me. I have nothing against this new Spider-man tho he is a replacement for Peter who died and he just happens to be black/Hispanic and I am cool with that.

@SuperBats, um, I have gay friends and they don't actually like the color pink. Plus, the character of Northstar, the first openly gay hero wears white and black.

Jeez people the pink thing is just a joke. call me dumb or a biggot or whatever but I don't like my superheroes being politically correct. I like them they way they have been for 70 plus years. I have nothing against gays or any other minoriy group.

@FlashGordon2287 (with a picture that does not relate to the character the username is)
What time it is? REBUTTAL TIIIIME!!!! (God, I watch Adventure Time way too much).

Any way, here are my rebuttals to these points:
1. True they did, but they could at least introduce the new Spider-Man through origin story instead of just reveal him right away.
2. Yeah, but than again a racial Spider-Man already happen before (Spider-Man 2099 = Half Hispanic/Half Irish); so this whole revelation of being black is not something that deserve to be made a big deal out of it being a surprise (from both the media and fans). On a side note, this situation is the reverse on the Green Lantern situation where the black one (John Stewart) was well liked, and the Hispanic desent one isn't liked (Kyle Rayner). So, just deal with this anger cause it will be gone sooner or later.
3. Than, why the hell make Spider-Man black? So far, that contradicts your first reason on having more black heroes.
4. Wait, he is gay? Son of a bitch, Marvel, it is one thing to make Colossus . . . wait, this is a different Spider-Man. Aw well, it was still pretty retarded making Colossus gay just to appeal to the gay community, I guess a gay Spider-Man will be alright (but concidering wearing red and blue tights will pretty much make any hetero character gay, especially spider theme ones that comes with exotic poses).
5. The problem seems like something similar to the Kyle Rayner as Green Lantern thing; the identity is given to a total n00b, so to speak, who have no backstory to accompony the how's and why's this guy got these powers. So in the end, the complaints are pretty sound as to why this new guy is getting some heat.

@BigK, did you even read my article? I'm sorry I have to explain to a person who starts off nit picking my photo , but ALLOW ME TO RETORT! It's called story structure, each writer does it differently. Making him black has nothing to do with appealing to a black demographic. I know and have plenty of people who read Ultimate Spider-Man who are black and trust me when I say making him black has nothing to do with appealing to a black demographic. Why can a character just be a certain race and not have to attract attention for it? Why is a person not a person? Alos He's not gay. Did you not read that? I'm not surprised. Also Kyle Rayner was given a back story.

@FlashGordon2287

Where did you get the idea that I didn't read your article. I was just providing some ideas on a story structual level as to why the new Spider-Man is hated (didn't think that was the case I was pointing out, since after all a rebuttal is the points made by the opposing side).

I mean seriously, when they (Marvel) announced that there is going to be a new Spider-Man, they pretty much make it seem like who behind the mask is a big surprise of who the character is behind the mask. This made people think that it could be some preexisting character in the mythos, instead it was just some guy; and the surprise is that he is black. Yeah, that pretty much didn't impress me so I basically just hated that twist as it seems like some way of gaining shock value just like the last Ultimate publication. But that didn't really mean I hate the character; there is a reason why I stated that he is a reverse similarity to Kyle Rayner (since obviously, YOU, haven't read my comment fully).

Seriously man, don't reall take offence into contradicting opinions. New Ultimate Spider-Man will be a good new character, but still have an introduction that isn't popular (like Kyle Rayner).

P.S. That was "nit-picking" when I talk about your icon, that was just some wry humor, its not like I hate the fact that you use the Flash for your username. It is just funny that you use him for your username since it is common that Flash Gordan is sometimes accidently affiliated with the Flash. And my comments on him being gay, also a joke if you pay attention to the context of the comments; I mean, this guy could be gay in the stories.

Oh, and congratulations; you just been trolled for overeacting over a comment that you just don't like. :P

FlashGordon2287 - 8/6/2011, 8:44 PM
I said he's not gay in the article. I even had some backup facts to prove it. I'm not overreacting, opinion is subjective, it's just when opinion is bigoted or racist that something needs to be said. Also as for the "surprise" he's black, Marvel never made a big deal out of him being black. Everyone else did.
BigK1337
BigK1337 - 8/6/2011, 8:49 PM
On the whole gay Colossus:
1) He is obviously change to be gay in the Ultimate comics mostly due to the lack of homosexual mutants. And since gay rights was a pretty popular subject at the time Ultimate X-Men was out, they made him gay to appeal to the ideas of gay rights.
2) In the mainstreme stories, he wasn't gay in the first place; therefore this was an attempt to appeal to gays. Nothing wrong with that, really; I mean, they could at least just create a new character that IS gay to begin with; not use a character that everybody knows and use that BS excuse that a different universe means different personality for characters (hense why the Ultimates isn't well liked by most fans of the Avengers save for SHIELD's involvement).
FlashGordon2287
FlashGordon2287 - 8/6/2011, 8:55 PM
Are you a consultant for Marvel? No. Can you verify this? I doubt it, this is speculation but here's the thing. the X-Men is already a metaphor for gays (as well as other things) why to do that change just to appeal to gays? Like I said, northstar was already there/
BigK1337
BigK1337 - 8/6/2011, 8:56 PM
@FlashGordon2287

Tell that to the press converense and the media they were in that talks about it. Onthe gay part, I WAS JOKING IN THOSE COMMENTS!!! Seriously, all I did was joke on the possibilities that he could be gay.

Plus, there was hardly anything bigoted about my comments. I never said that a black, gay Spider-Man was a bad things; I was complaining how the whole presentation of this new Spider-Man was presented AS a shock. So in the end, you pretty much took most of what I said WAY too seriously.
BigK1337
BigK1337 - 8/6/2011, 8:58 PM
@FlashGordon2287

The X-Men are also a metaphor for racism, anti-semitism, the Red Scare and communism; but this isn't about the X-Men, this is only about Colossus.
FlashGordon2287
FlashGordon2287 - 8/6/2011, 8:58 PM
No, I never said YOU were bigoted or racist, you're a dude on the internet, I don't know you this is simple conversation, I was saying that because of the many racist and bigoted comments I've seen about Miles. Also, after you said you were joking, ok I understand that. This is just a conversation between fellow nerds.

It's funny that we basically agree on a majority of this stuff. We're not dumb, I think I have may taken a more defensive take against the whole rebuttal part of it. I think I may have assumed to much that you were disagreeing with the whole article, which I see you don't.

@FlashGordon2287

Exactly; Black, gay, hispanic (just realised he is biracial) Spider-Man isn't wrong to see happen; but in a nerdy perspective, he was introduced poorly as we have no idea how he got these powers/abilities and why Marvel chose to reveal this guy as a character we know him.

Anyway, I am sorry for thinking that you call me a racist; it just that in your last comment you kind of implied that when you say there is something wrong with bigoted sounding opinions. Just like you said about me, you can't judge my character throught the internet; just like how I shouldn't judge your. After all, we are all just nerds arguing over contradicting viewpoints on a nerd topic.

I agree with most of what you said except that Spider-Man is a legacy character. He has never had a sidekick like all the examples you gave, and is a loner by trade that happens to have awesome team-ups. It's Peter Parker that makes Spider-Man not the other way around. Same goes for a Superman type character; Superman is Clark Kent and not the other way around. Anyone else wearing that costume is just an impostor. Even in an alternate universe such as the ultimate, I think marvel may have overstepped their boundaries on this one IMO. If anyone brings up 2099 that's in the future and PP was never replaced, just honoured and definitely not the same. If it was statistically right they would have made him Chinese and living in Shanghai.

FriendlyNeighborhoodSpidey - 8/7/2011, 1:39 AM
It's not so much that he is black..... it's that it's not Parker. Bendis had developed such a cool possible future for him, ESPECIALLY with his relationship to Iron Man, Nick Fury and the Ultimates. I couldn't wait to see what his future held. Now he's dead.
Also, I disagree with you about it not being PC. I think it is. I mean come on, isn't it at least a LITTLE bit obvious? In SOME way? Anyway, let's see what happens I guess....
I could be wrong.
FlashGordon2287
FlashGordon2287 - 8/7/2011, 1:47 AM
How is it obvious? Because he's not white? So if it were any race would someone say its PC?
CubanSuperman

American Black people and American White people are the only idiots who realize that there is no such thing as a Black Hispanic or a White Hispanic. To Hispanics, you are either Hispanic or you are not. You either speak Spanish or you don't. There is no color barrier when speaking Spanish is the only thing that qualifies you as being Hispanic. Look at the Cuban national baseball team. They are blacker than most NAACP meeting but none of them would consider themselves black. They are Cubans. Get with the program, America. Black and White are colors. Hispanic is an ethnicity.

Why don't they just make better written characters of color? Let them be more unique and individualistic. It's a simple argument. Sure, we could make Superman black, Batman Puerto Rican, and Capt. America Native American. Why set them up for silly comparisons?
