Well, it has been just over a week since Prometheus hit theatres across the globe. It has been met with some very mixed-reactions form Alien fans and the general public. In this review I will breakdown what I thought about the film.
The Visuals:
Visually Prometheus is easily one of the best looking movies of the year. The clarity and photo-realism displayed in this film is breathtaking. It is so good that you will be hard-pressed to find anything particularly jarring. The transitions from CGI are some of the best I have seen, I would even go as far as to say, that it bests Avatar in this department. Of course, this is most unfair to compare considering Avatar come out two and a half years ago. The sheer depth and scale of this picture is huge There are vibrant blues, which are accompanied by gritty greys, giving it a Sci-Fi noir edge.
The Story:
This, in my view is easily one of Prometheus's shortcomings. It starts off with intrigue and wonder and then it seems to lose this edge as the film progresses. The final act unfortunately raises more questions than answers, which are completely swept aside for the spectacle. The ending felt rushed and left me with some pacing issues. Prometheus starts off slow but manages to build momentum somewhere around the middle. This then goes into overdrive in the final act and as a result leaves you behind, scratching your head. This was the most important aspect of the film and unfortunately for me, it didn't deliver what it appeared to promise.
The Acting:
The acting in this film is a bit of a mixed bag. The standouts for me were Michael Fassbender and Noomi Rapace. Fassbender in particular is really starting to prove how fantastic he is at acting. His role as David, is one of the most intriguing parts of the film. You truly believe he is the character, which in my view many actors fail to accomplish.
Noomi Rapace, was also very good. She played the main protagonist and really made you feel the emotions she was portraying. Every bump and scratch felt real when she was involved and it takes tremendous acting ability to do that. I hope to see more of her in the future.
Conclusion:
Prometheus has a very interesting concept that unfortunately fails, due to the films pacing and multiple story strands. It is almost like it doesn't know what it wants to be. One moment it is a suspenseful thriller and the next it is a simple action blockbuster. It doesn't know where to draw the line, making it very messy. There were some moments that I enjoyed, especially being a longtime Alien fan but it just didn't hit the right notes with me. It wasn't the space thriller I was expecting it to be. There are clear shout outs to a sequel, so we will have to wait and see whether that does anything to make this a better viewing experience.
7/10
