On Tuesday, Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.) released Wastebook 2013, his annual survey of wasteful spending by the federal government. This year, Coburn identified 100 projects that cost taxpayers nearly $30 billion. One of Coburn's top offenders were:

Soldier of Steel - Thanks to sequestration, the Army National Guard will reduce its strength by 8,000 soldiers. Over the next 10 years, the Army's Total Force will have to be reduced by at least 100,000.

In 2013, as part of a promotional campaign, the Army National Guard spent $10 million on a "Soldier of Steel" tie-in with the Superman movie, "Man of Steel."

"This money could have been better spent on the real life supermen and superwomen in the Army National Guard who are courageously risking all in the fight for truth, justice, and the American way,"
he wrote.

So what do you think CBMers, Do you think the Government wasted money on Zack Snyder's Man of Steel?

It was more of a tribute and recruitment video than it was promotion for Man of Steel.

Moohika
Moohika - 12/19/2013, 9:23 AM
So a measly $10 million out of $30 BILLION was spent to promote a movie and at the same time pay tribute to the National Guard and this makes his list out of all the other hundreds of things the gov. is wasting money on?!!!
Dmon
Dmon - 12/19/2013, 9:24 AM
@Moohika UM it was not the only thing on the list

Coburn is one of the few people in Congress that battles wasteful spending. He comes out with this list every year. Everyone should take time to read it. It will blow your mind.

@Dmon
still shouldn't be on the list. $10 million is less than .001% of that $30 Billion, less than .001%!

This guy has a point but is a douche for blatantly slamming Man of Steel. Avengers, Thor The Dark World, Iron Man 3, Gravity, Green Lantern, Spiderman 3, The Lone Ranger, Django etc.... All big budget movies do this...

My gripe is still with the Academy. Snuffing MOS for Lone Ranger, Iron Man 3 etc? wtf...

Actually, he makes a good point. We spend way too much on stuff we don't need to.

Then people wonder why we're in debt...

Hardly a slam at man of steel...more like a slam at the marketing department for the national guard!

Man of Steel shouldn't have paired up with the National Guard any way.

They probably spent 10 Million dollars that was already allocated for promotions. Personally, I think it was a good use of money that would have been spent on posters or non-superhero commercials.

US-Senator Needs to check where that money was already allocated to, then he needs to get off his ass and worry about doing his own job. B/C I could imaging a fictional character, literally sitting in ink and paper, curling edges on the senate floor could accomplish more than some of the debates currently going on in congress.
