Thor, the Norse God of Thunder and Lightning, and popular Marvel Comics character since first appearing in Journey Into Mystery #83, August 1962, is coming to the big screen courtesy of Matthew Vaughn.
The director of Layer Cake—which launched Daniel “007” Craig’s career—and Stardust has been attached to the project since August and had intended on beginning production prior to the writers’ strike.
With Stardust a moderate success in the US and a big hit in the UK, Vaughn has decided to bring the Thor production to his native land. Vaughn told a reporter at the Daily Mail, "It obviously bought us luck filming at home and I'm relieved that the movie has performed so well in my own country.”
According to the article in the Daily Mail, Vaughn is receiving some pressure from the studio to film Thor in the US, but he is determined to make the film in the UK:
”We have the A-list actors, designers, cinematographers and crew in Britain, so there's no need to make Thor among all that madness in Los Angeles.”
Thor was initially slated for a 2009 release, but that could be pushed back due to the ongoing writers’ strike.
