With a site with the name Comic Book Movie, our field of scope is somewhat limited. And that is a good thing I’ll hasten to add, as is shown by our ranking on Google whenever someone looks for news on comic book movies. But the point I’ll make is that we don’t often stray from our given topic.
But with the wide ranging impact that the writers’ strike has had on Hollywood, we’ve been able to stretch just a little bit.
All of that might be coming to an end though, if the rumors are to be believed. There’s not much to say, but that the informal negotiations that we knew were taking place between the WGA and the APMTP seem to be reaching some common ground.
According to the New York Times, the talks “…have eliminated the major roadblocks to a new contract … according to people who were briefed on the situation but requested anonymity because they were not authorized to speak.”
Entering its fourth month, the writers’ strike has laid waste to TV programming and movies for the next 12 months. It will be awhile before anyone comes back from it, except for a few notables such as Marvel and the Sci Fi Channel.
But the WGA was quick to quell any rumors that a deal had been reached. They aren’t saying things aren’t going well, but just that nothing is done yet. Here is a statement released on Sunday from the WGA leadership;
To Our Fellow Members,
While fully mindful of the continuing media blackout, we write you to address the rumors and reports that undoubtedly you have been hearing.
The facts: we are still in talks and do not yet have a contract. When and if a tentative agreement is reached, the first thing we will do is alert our membership with an e-mail message. Until then, please disregard rumors about either the existence of an agreement or its terms.
Until we have reached an agreement with the AMPTP, it is essential that we continue to show our resolve, solidarity, and strength.
Picketing will resume on Monday. Our leverage at the bargaining table is directly affected by your commitment to our cause. Please continue to show your support on the line. We are all in this together.
Best,
Patric M. Verrone
President, WGAW
Michael Winship
President, WGAE
So while there is nothing concrete, at least maybe this strike is coming to an end.
