Warner Takes An ELFQUEST To The Big Screen

The cult-favorite comic book Elfquest is being adapted into a motion picture.

At long last, it appears that Elfquest, the cult fantasy comic series by Wendy & Richard Pini, is heading to the big screen through the efforts of Warners Bros.

The original comic, which the Pinis began self-publishing in 1978, followed a tribe of elves known as the Wolfriders in their attempts to survive and link with other dispersed elves on an Earth-like planet with two moons while on the lookout for tribes of humans and trolls, both of which acted as allies and enemies. (Wendy is shown at right, posing with her lead characters.)

Elfquest used intense (for that time) themes of violence and sexuality to help build a more mature audience. (On occasion, this modus operandi got people in trouble.) At certain points, Marvel and DC Comics took turns chipping in to help publish the comic.

Hollywood has long tried to adapt the series, and several attempts at an animated series or feature have been made over the years.

Rawson Thurber (Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story) has boarded the project to write, produce and direct. Whether or not the film will be live action has yet to be determined.
