Never trust a monkey in a suit. Or ones that can talk for that matter.
8. ESCAPE FROM THE PLANET OF THE APES
While the paradoxical time travel element is really interesting, the 'fish out of water' humour just didn't work (side note - Star Trek: The Voyage Home had a similar 'fish out of water' story where it worked).
Statues have feelings too. And can see the future.
7. BATTLE FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES
A forgettable sequel with a cool ominous ending (statues crying? I mean c'mon!). Dawn took a lot of story points from this final instalment but handled them much better. A poor way to end the original franchise.
Is this a metaphor for something? Probably not.
6. CONQUEST OF THE PLANET OF THE APES
What
Battle is
Dawn is what
Conquest is to
Rise.
Rise took the similar ideas but made them better. However, Roddy McDowall is fantastic as Caeser and his speech at the end still gives me chills.
This statue doesn't cry. Ape Lincoln has balls. Furry monkey balls that is.
5. PLANET OF THE APES (2001)
A lot of people really hate this movie, I don't. I think its a fun, if not a forgettable remake. At least they tried to do something original and technically speaking it is closer to the original novel than the first movie. Also the ending is insane! It makes no sense, but its even more of a twist than the original - mainly because the movie makes no indication or foreshadowing at all that it'll end like that. I almost wish a sequel was made just to see what the *#%@ happened! Highlights include the make-up, visuals, and Tim Roth as General Thade. Also Estella Warren is like super hot in this, worth watching just for that.
Beneath the Planet of the Apes Or How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Love The Bomb
4. BENEATH THE PLANET OF THE APES
Easily the best sequel of the original series, Beneath takes place shortly after the events of the first movie and introduce some key
Apes-franchise trade-marks like the Mutants. The ending is explosive enough (literally) that you almost wish (I do very much wish) the original series ended here.
Mo-Cap Performers. On. Horses.
3. DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES
Thrilling action with a strong emotional core. Loses some marks for not having enough references/easter eggs - I love my fan-service dammit! One of the years best films.
Will: "Have we started the fire?" Caeser: "Yes. The fire rises."
2. RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES
The movie is just such a great character piece, packed with the expected thrills and unexpected emotional punches. The nods to the originals are also much appreciated.
This franchise loves its statues. Oh 4 decade old spoilers btw.
1. PLANET OF THE APES (1968)
Easily one of the most iconic science-fiction movies of all time, the original
Planet of the Apes has stood the test of time. Not only one of the most quotable, pop-culture inspiring movies of all time, the movie is also very smart. If you haven't seen the movie, what the hell are you waiting for?
