Fans of the Alien franchise were disappointed when it was announced that Neil Blomkamp's new Alien film would be replaced by Ridley Scott's Prometheus sequel, Alien: Covenant. No release date was given for Blomkamp's planned film, and it looked like it might be stuck in development hell. It looks like all hope isn't lost, however; Sigourney Weaver, who portrayed Ellen Ripley in all four Alien films, has confirmed the film is still happening, and that Scott just wanted to make his film first.

Speaking at VMWare , Weaver said "Ridley asked Neill NOT to make our Alien til after Prometheus 2. He (Ridley) wanted his movie to shoot and be released first. But it’s an AMAZING script, and Neill and I are REALLY excited about doing it. We’re doing other things until we can get going on that," she admitted. "I’d be really surprised if we DIDN’T do it, because it’s such a great script, and we love working together."

This is great news for fans, who were anxious to see the return of Ripley and Michael Biehn's Corporal Hicks. The film plans to be a direct continuation from Aliens, disregarding the events of Alien 3 and Alien: Resurrection.

Alien: Covenant will hit theaters on August 4, 2017. Are you excited for "Alien 5"?

“Bound for a remote planet on the far side of the galaxy, the crew of the colony ship Covenant discovers what they think is an uncharted paradise, but is actually a dark, dangerous world — whose sole inhabitant is the ‘synthetic’ David (Michael Fassbender), survivor of the doomed Prometheus expedition.”

This is just more wishful thinking for Weaver part, Neil's Bloomhack Alien 3.2 never going to happen 'cause it's based on a cheap and wet fan-fiction and instead trying to find a way to continue the franchise and moving forward he wanted to retcon the masterpiece called Alien 3 -Assembly Cut-.

They should just film Alien 5, get it ready, then release it a few months after Ridley Scott's film. The actors aren't getting any younger.

I remember Weaver being very passionate about Resurrection too, so i'm wary. I felt her story and character should have been finished after Alien 3. I love Ripley and the original 3 movies are really her story as much as it is the aliens. But since Alien 3 I just dont understand this constant need to keep reviving her character at the expense of the universe that has been created. They could have literally done anything after 3, the world that had been created in the first three movies had a lot of room for new Alien and encounters and new characters.

The movie franchise it's called ALIEN, not RIPLEY.

This new Alien film could be more interesting than Prometheus 2

Chappie sucked and I'm beginning to think Blomkamp is a one trick pony.

I don't want this movie. Bring on Prometheus 2.
