BOX OFFICE: STAR TREK BEYOND Opens In China To A Solid $31.3 Million

Though a sequel to Star Trek Beyond was already announced by Paramount, the film's current worldwide box office gross might suggest otherwise. Could China, the #2 film market in the world, save the day?

Paramount has officially stated that a sequel to Star Trek Beyond was in development that would see Chris Hemsworth reprise and expand upon his role as George Kirk in 2009's Star Trek.  However, the film has earned only $285.39 million worldwide from an estimated production budget of $185 million.

Typically, movies have to earn at least double their production costs in order to have any chance at a sequel.  However, with a $31.3 million opening weekend in China there's still hope that the picture's international box office gross can bring in just enough to convince the studio to move forward with a fourth installment in the Kelvin timeline.  Star Trek Beyond opens in Argentina and Mexico next weekend and doesn't open in Japan until October 21.

The film is still playing in North American theaters and earned 2.5 million this weekend but is currently slated to hit blu-ray and DVD on September 20

Why didn't this movie make any money?

As a lifelong Trek fan (seriously I started watching the original series as young as 4 and never stopped) I've accepted Trek will never be popular. It's never really been that mass icon like Star Wars. You can get close by basically turning it into an action movie but then you slowly lose the fans. Then if you gain them back by making a movie like Star Trek Beyond you lose everyone else.

Plus, the marketing for the movie was horrible. The firat real trailer didn't come until four months before the movie. And the teaser was awful.
