'Han Solo' Candidate Dave Franco Explains What Lucasfilm Is Looking For In That Planned STAR WARS Spinoff

He may not be the rumoured frontrunner, but after auditioning for the role of Han Solo in Phil Lord and Chris Miller's upcoming spinoff, the actor has plenty to say about what exactly Lucasfilm is looking for...

Dave Franco worked with Phil Lord and Chris Miller on the Jump Street movies, and after starring in those and a number of other comedies, it feels like the role which will make him as big a star as his older brother is right around the corner. Could that be Han Solo though? Sure, Deadline has said that Alden Ehrenreich (Hail Caesar!) is the frontrunner for the role, but we've heard that before now so nothing is set in stone just yet!

When MTV News caught up with the actor recently, they asked the Now You See Me 2 star about what the experience of auditioning for such a coveted role was like.

"I went in one time for Jeanie McCarthy, who I’ve auditioned for a million times before, and we just had a really fun time together in the room," Franco explained. "And then because of the nature of what it is, it just explodes everywhere. Everyone’s coming up and being like, ‘Dude what’s going on?’ and I’m like, ‘I don’t know, you know as much as me!’"

If he's only had the one audition, it doesn't sound like he's among the finalists, but who knows! Asked if Disney is looking for someone who can imitate Harrison Ford or an entirely new take, he added: "No, I’m not good with impressions or anything like that. I think that’s the reason why it’s so hard to cast this role. Do they want someone to perfectly embody who Harrison Ford is, or do they want to go a completely different route? Do they want someone to look really similar to him? I don’t know, I think they’re struggling with that."

It's going to be interesting to see how this role ends up being cast anyway, as will how The LEGO Movie helmers end up handling the story of Han Solo's early years! Do you think Franco is a good fit?

"What Disney Are Looking For"

You might want to change that to "is" before people start whining.

I'm a big Star Wars fan, some of my favorite films. Saying that I'm not interested in this movie at all. Harrison Ford is Han Solo, no one else can do it. I've never been interested in this movie since it was announced.

Look, I have zero expectations for this movie. When this was announcend, I already thought that it will be bullshit and unnecessary because the whole idea of a young Han Solo is just one thing: Cash-cow for Disney BUT I've trash-talked Rogue One before and the trailer looks amazing, so I'll just wait and see how things work out.

This is risky - Young Indy in Last Crusade was fun for 5 minutes (handled with quirky callbacks by Spielberg) - but Harrison Ford has a coolness and swagger that are uniquely his own. Han Solo is not the pop cultural icon - it's Ford.

Candidate?? He doesn't look like Han to me.

They replaced Sean Connery and William Shatner, but they can't replace Harrison Ford.... Hmm...

What a clickbait title. At no point does he come anywhere near explaining what Disney is looking for. His answer was basically "I don't know".

I had no interest, but after what happens to him in episode 7, I think it will be a little more meaningful.
