With J.J. Abrams making it clear that future Star Wars movies will include gay characters, Mark Hamill has now weighed in on that by stating that his iconic hero's sexuality is also open to interpretation. Could we be about to see some major changes for Luke Skywalker when he returns in Episode VIII? "I just read online that JJ is very much open to that. In the old days you would get fan mail. But now fans are writing and ask all these questions, ‘I’m bullied in school... I’m afraid to come out’. They say to me, ‘Could Luke be gay?’ I’d say it is meant to be interpreted by the viewer."
"If you think Luke is gay, of course he is," he added. "You should not be ashamed of it. Judge Luke by his character, not by who he loves." That's an interesting interpretation, and an inspiring message to the type of people Hamill is referring to. Do you think it would be a big deal for Luke Skywalker to be outed as gay or is it something which is better left up to the viewer to decide?
