George Lucas Is Not Apologizing for Jar Jar Binks

Lucas (Star Wars) is never going to apologize for Jar Jar but he does hint at Jar Jar Binks inspiration and how much of an influence Disney has had on him over the years

Director and Star Wars creator George Lucas told fans at the D23 Expo in Anaheim on Friday that Disney's Goofy influenced the making of the love-him-or-hate-him Gungan character from the 1999 prequel Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace. 

"I can't even begin to tell you how much of an influence Disney has had on me," Lucas said. "I will say one secret that nobody knows; not many people realize that Goofy was the inspiration for Jar Jar Binks." 

After the audience laughed, Lucas added, "I know that you will look at him differently now. It's pretty obvious, actually, but, um, I love Goofy and I love Jar Jar." 

Disney chairman Bob Iger welcomed Lucas,  with both C3PO and R2D2, to the stage, where he received a standing ovation. 

"I tried to remember back what it was like when I was young and what I got from Disney," Lucas said, "and I am very happy to be here with two of my daughters. One of them's older and sitting here and trying to get into the movie business just like me, and the other one is two years old and we're re-going through the park. To watch it through her eyes is an amazing experience."

Star Wars: The Force Awakens, also known as Star Wars: Episode VII is an upcoming sci-fi space opera film directed by J. J. Abrams. The film will be the seventh installment in the episodic Star Wars film series created by George Lucas. The Force Awakens stars John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, and Max von Sydow, with Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew, and Kenny Baker reprising their roles from previous Star Wars films. The story is set approximately 30 years after the events of Return of the Jedi (1983). Star Wars: The Force Awakens opens on December 18, 2015 in North America.

Still can't believe Abrams disregarded his ideas for the final trilogy.

I still do not like the character, but I do respect Lucas for sticking with his convictions and his character.

I think that Lucas is STILL somewhat of a genius ...if not just a marketing one at this point. The thing was that he was a genius who absolutely needed a filter. From my understanding, there were a lot of people working with Lucas on the original trilogy, helping him adjust ideas ...or he just didn't have the technology to do his balls to the wall insane ideas. During the first film, no one was kissing his ass and telling him he was this legend who could do no wrong. His ideas HAD to be vetted before seeing film. Empire and Jedi had different directors to bring his vision to life. By the time, we got to the special editions and the pre-quels, I think Star Wars was such an unstoppable juggernaut of a franchise in both film and merchandising (again, where Lucas really knows what he is doing) that the studios just said "George Lucas can do know wrong, everything you want to do is approved." Which is why we a trilogy shot primarily on Green Screen about politics with some racist characters. Also, why Lucas directed the whole trilogy.

I am not saying that he was always a hack because there are some great ideas in there ...he just needs the right people around him to tell what is gold and what is crap because he certainly isn't going to know the difference.

I don't wish death on the guy. I don't think he is a terrible human being. He created this AMAZING universe and that cannot EVER be taken away from him. Also, as an objectivist, I respect the hell out of his ability to milk the franchise for all it worth and then selling it to the top bidder. If anything, he is a hell of a business man.

Why should he apologize? Fans are fickle. I'm glad he never compromised his vision. It shows that he's a man of character and an artist. Thank you, George, for revolutionizing the film industry and giving us a rich new galaxy of adventures to explore.

As much as I dislike Jar Jar Binks, I respect George Lucas for not apologising for the character. He knew what he wanted to do with the character and sometimes, in situations like this, the worst thing you can do is apologise for it.
