Success Of THE FORCE AWAKENS Kills Live-Action STAR WARS TV Series

Star Wars Underworld, a Game of Thrones-esque TV series that would be set in the Star Wars universe and focus on two families vying for control of the galaxy's criminal underbelly is not happening anytime soon says TV Line. Is a Star Wars TV series approaching over-saturation?

Ever since Star Wars Underworld was first teased back in 2005, there's been at least one yearly report that the project was still in development and hoping to hit airwaves soon.  However, ABC President Paul Lee has officially put the project out to pasture.  TV Line spoke to Lee, Lucasfilm's Kathleen Kennedy and Bad Robot's J.J. Abrams to get the latest update.  With a new trilogy and several spinoffs and prequels in development, the focus is on the cinema, not TV. Another roadblock is the fact that J.J. Abrams' Bad Robot has an exclusive TV deal with Warner Bros., which would prevent his involvement with any television programs at the Disney owned, ABC.

For now, confirmed an anonymous insider to TV Line, the only TV project in development is the animated, Star Wars Rebels.  Do you think this is for the best or would you welcome a Tuesday night double-header of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and a Star Wars TV show?

I would prefer a Star Wars show on Netflix as apposed to ABC. I'm still hoping this will be a reality at some point.

I think that star wars really only works with cartoons, it would be nice if they make another holiday special.

I think that's a good thing, honestly can't see a live action Star Wars TV series working.

You would need a really big budget for such a TV series.

Now cancel the movies too.

You better trade mark that before Axel Braun beats you to it.

I would love love love a Tuesday night double header of AoS and a Star Wars show. Don't focus just on the cinema Disney. Expand. So many stories to tell.

@TheBeard Alex Braun is way to lazy in his titles to name something like that.

"The movie was successful so no tv show"

By what F*cking logic does that make sense!?

HOW COULD THEY EVER DO A TV SHOW WITH THE RIGOROUS SCHEDULE OF A WHOPING 1 MOVIE A YEAR!?

ARE THEY LACKING THE RESOURCES!? Probably! TFA ONLY BROUGHT IN A LITTLE LESS THAN $2 BILLION! That's not nearly enough for TV!

Let them cancel it, there's no need for a tv show, we got the Force Awakens which been doing very well at the box office so far. It's a shame that they pushed Avatar 2 from 2017 to 2018 beacause of Star Wars Episode VIII. But that's okay i guess the longer time it takes for Cameron to make a sequel it might be better than first one we just have to wait and see.

This is fantastic news. There IS truth in the statement that "There can be too much of a good thing"

Marvel is literally reaching that point with the MCU, when we get 2, and soon 3 movies a year...we do not need half a dozen TV shows all existing in that same continuity. Moderation can be the key to maintaining demand.

One Star Wars movie a year and one animated show at a time is plenty of material for the Star Wars universe.

The MCU desperately needs to cancel pretty much all of the ABC projects and really think twice about having so many shows on Netflix.

At least DC decided to keep their film universe as a film-only thing, and isn't mixing TV in with it.

But even their TV universe is unwieldy, Arrow, Flash, Constantine, Legends of Tomorrow...all of those shows running multiple seasons, it becomes too massive for anyone to care.

@fettastic

Wut, so this canceled tv show would set between Epi 3 and 4, again? I'm so sick and tired of all the Star Wars stuff set on that timeline. Star Wars Rebel, Rogue One, Han Solo spin off, everything that's coming out on the screen were on that timeline. I mean c'mon give us something new...

If they are making one I hope it would be around after Return of the Jedi or around the same current timeline as TFA. I wouldnt even mind if it was set before episode 1 eventhough i'm not a fan of prequel.

That's a big shame, you can't have enough Star Wars. I see no reason to not do it.... strike whilst the iron is hot. Star Wars is as popular as it'll ever be right now owing to the tremendously received and performing Force Awakens.

Its still pretty SAD that we haven't gotten a STAR WARs TV SERIES yet, with the likes of Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica, Doctor Who, the Stargate Universe, & other Sci Fi series that have been done with decent special effects.

I still say they need to do an KOTOR type show. I mean, why not? If they aren't going to use the EU stuff then make up their own canon and set it far enough back that the show will have little if any bearing on the movies.

This story sounds more intiguing than the new one they have going on with the movies.

This kinda of pisses me off cause this show and it's story is what I was looking forward to with the Star Wars doing expanded stories.

Rogue One and other stories where they get away from the OT characters is what I'm looking forward to the most.

It will be nice to see their stories come to an end (the OT characters) but I want new stuff, GIMME MORE OF THE GALAXY

@Spock

At this point they can't really blame it on the fx budget. People are creating fan films in their bedroom with a laptop that look convincing enough to be on the big screen.
