Director Jon Watts Debunks Recent SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING Casting/Character Rumor

Spider-Man: Homecoming has been making a lot of very interesting casting additions lately, but director Jon Watts has now taken to social media in order to clear up some unfounded controversy...

Earlier this month, Michael Barbieri (The Dark Tower) was added to the cast of Spider-Man: Homecoming. No character details were revealed at the time, but one site claimed that he would be playing new character based on Ganke, the best friend of Miles Morales. Needless to say, this quickly led Sony and Marvel Studios being accused of whitewashing, but everyone jumped the gun.

As you can see from the Tweet below, the reboot's director Jon Watts has made it clear that Barbieri most definitely isn't going to be linked to Ganke, so we're officially back to not knowing who he is.

Who will he end up playing? We're going to have to wait and see, but with any luck, Marvel will lock the Spider-Man: Homecoming cast down soon so we can get a full cast list of characters. If Sony brings the movie to Comic-Con next month, chances are we'll hear something then, but for now, at least we know for sure that Barbieri is neither Ganke nor someone based on him in any way, shape, or form!

Good! People are just trying to create drama, trying to make Marvel be the bad guy. Shame on them.

@TheCantilope - Quasi-Racism pisses me off almost as much as flat out racism. Its apparently okay to change white characters to different races (Karate Kid, Human Torch, Annie, Jimmy Olsen, etc.) but lord forbid it be the other way around.

@JredTheRed - People like you are weird. Hollywood has always changed none white character to white characters and in most cases switched the races of everyone in the movie to white. In most cases they would go out fo there why to not cast none whites at all. They've been doing it for the past 100 years of American cinema and most white people have been totally ok with it. Now in recent years they've been trying to correct that mistake but people like you are completely ignorant of everything that that was done in the past and still gets done to day.

They switch race swap on white character you lose your mind. They white wash an entire movie it doesn't bother you at all.

@Demongod20 - just because it was ok in the past, doesn't mean it's ok to do now. EITHER way. It doesn't get to be "now it's our turn", it needs to be "this needs to stop"

"Barbieri is playing an original character who is modeled after Ultimate Spider-Man's Ganke." Reading comprehension.
