EDITORIAL: What Would Marvel Studios Do If SPIDER-MAN Came Home?

Marvel Comics' most famous character, Spider-Man, could (potentially) be coming home. For years, fans have been dreaming to see the wall-crawler on screen with some of Marvel's other heroes, and now it may become a reality. Hit the jump to check out some potential routes Marvel could take if Spidey comes home!

Let’s be honest, the past three to four months have not been a particularly easy time to be a Spider-Man fan. Whether you were a fan of Marc Webb’s (or should I say Sony’s) franchise, Sam Raimi’s franchise, or the character in general. With so many rumours and very little to no answers, it is very tough to predict where the web-head will end up next. Since, the now infamous “Sony Hack,” It appears that fans everywhere have rejoiced for one reason, and one reason only: Spider-Man could be coming “home.”

While on the surface, this sounds fantastic. Imagine a film where Spider-Man meets Tony Stark, or his childhood hero, Captain America, it could truly be amazing. And we almost got that, in fact, earlier this week it was reported that Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios had come to an agreement, and would share the rights to the character, it what would have easily have been the biggest news story of the (comic book) movie world. However, this happiness was downplayed when a representative of Sony came out and called the report “old” and has “no validity whatsoever.”

Now, put yourself in Sony’s shoes. Would you really announce that your, and Marvel’s most popular character, would be coming home within the first month of the new year? Of course not! Especially when there are such conventions as New York Comic-Con, or San Diego Comic-Con. I firmly believe that Marvel and Sony have come to an agreement, but I also believe we will not hear anything until July at SDCC (San Diego Comic-Con).

So, let’s say this is legitimate. Let’s say Spider-Man is coming home. What would Marvel Studios do with the character? There are so, so many routes they can take. The character could appear very soon in a post credit scene of Captain America: Civil War, or in a full-blown role in Avengers: Infinity War. However, let’s take a look at all the routes Marvel are/have considered, so grab a drink, take a seat, and enjoy!

Option #1: Put Him On Netflix

I’m going to get the dumbest option out the way first. While Netflix is a great place to put lesser known heroes like Luke Cage or Daredevil, Spider-Man should be as far away from Netflix as possible. We are talking about a character who’s past two films have grossed over $1.4 billion worldwide. So, why the hell, would you put him on Netflix? “To tell a deeper story, and develop the characters” Or… You could put him in his own film-franchise, and earn even more money, because, and I’m sorry that I’m about to break everyone’s hearts here, but Marvel Studios do not care about the fans. They may look like they do, but really, they do things in order to make money, like a good business should.

Putting Spider-Man on Netflix instead of his own franchise would be an embarrassment and would not only show that Marvel do not value the wall-crawler, but would also show that Marvel do not understand the amount of money they could make from having him on the big-screen, something that I know, Marvel knows. While I understand that “Netflix is not TV,” and that they have made some truly brilliant shows, House Of Cards being one of them. Spider-Man is not a TV character.

Likelihood of this happening: Michael Bay winning the Oscar for Best Directing
(1.5/10)

Option #2: Captain America: Civil War

Another rumour that has been circulating for a while, is the possibility of introducing the character in the upcoming film, Captain America: Civil War. The film, which is presumably based on the best-selling storyline, Civil War, in which Spider-Man plays a rather large role, of course will not feature Spidey in the same role, as the screenplay has been complete for over three months, with shooting set to begin fairly soon. However, this does not mean that Spider-Man, or better yet, Peter Parker, cannot make an appearance in the film.

Earlier this week, the writers of the upcoming sequel played fairly coy around the idea of Spider-Man appearing, which got some fans (myself included) very excited. While the film has not begun shooting yet, this could mean that Marvel Studios are trying their best to find the right way to put Spidey into the film. Whether that means placing him in the post-credit scene, which should/will set up the third Avengers film, or that means shoving him into the film, with no reasoning (something I doubt Marvel will do), it sure is a possibility that Spider-Man could appear in Captain America: Civil War

Likelihood of this happneing: Kevin Feige making more ca$h than Jordan Belfort
(7.5/10)

Option #3: “Have a little… Patience.”

Yes, that is a quote from a Take That song. It would be fair to say that Marvel Studios do not need Spider-Man at the moment, wouldn’t it? I mean, Iron Man 3 made more money than any Spider-Man film, and Guardians Of The Galaxy out-grossed The Amazing Spider-Man 2. It would also be fair to say, that perhaps, people are a little tired of the old web-head. In the space of twelve (2002-2014) we have had five Spider-Man films. That is quite a lot. I’m not surprised that the films are making less money, I’m really not. Every superhero has a low-time, I mean look at Batman, and even the X-Men. It is fairly common for audiences to become tired of seeing the same thing, which, while every Spider-Man film has not been the same, seeing the wall-crawler on screen so much may have finally played it’s toll.

Interestingly, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, the lowest grossing Spider-Man film to-date, was  the second highest grossing Spider-Man film overseas. Raking in over $500 million, the first film being Spider-Man 3 which grossed $554 million overseas. It is quite interesting, as an Australian resident, the film made over $14 million here, which was also the second highest grossing Spider-Man film in the country. I guess what I am trying to get at, is that it appears that only Americans are really tired of Spider-Man

Which brings me to my point, maybe, unless they [Marvel] market towards an overseas audience, it might be a better thing to wait. The next Spider-Man film, no matter who makes it, unless critically acclaimed to the level of The Dark Knight, would probably make less money than The Amazing Spider-Man 2, especially in America. Now, I have no idea what Marvel’s plans are, maybe their planned film is in fact the best thing since sliced bread, but maybe it is not. At the time being, Marvel really don’t need Spider-Man, they have Robert Downey Jr. and the Iron Man character for at least another two films, and with the success of Guardians and the (potential) success of both Ant-Man and Dr. Strange, Marvel have two more toys to add to the toy-box.

Likelihood of this happening: Fox Giving Up The Fantastic Four rights
(4/10)

Option #4: With The Avengers Away, It’s Spider-Man’s Time To Play

Marvel’s two biggest films come out a year after each other, Avengers: Infinity War Part 1 and Part 2. Now, when these films come out, the first in 2018, and the second a year later, that would be four years since a Spider-Man film, which is perhaps the perfect time to bring in the wall-crawler. I am not talking about putting him in the Avengers films, no, God no, that is dumb. With the Avengers away, in space, taking on Thanos, who is on Earth to protect the planet, or better yet, who is in New York?

Cue Spider-Man. With the Avengers gone, Marvel could look at Spider-Man to be their potential filler. They could tell smaller stories, or bigger ones, with a new protagonist, in order to keep their universe feeling fresh. Along with the additions of Daredevil, Luke Cage and Iron Fist, to their roster, Spider-Man could be another member of New York’s heroes while Marvel’s big guns are defending the planet.

If Marvel did not choose this approach, it would actually damage their shared universe. Crime would not just stop, the minute the planet's greatest protectors are gone, in fact, it would skyrocket! This is where Spider-Man could make a huge name for himself, he could be the guy who stops the crime and problems in New York City while Earth's Mightiest Heroes are off doing their own thing.

A potential release date for this film would be between Infinity War Part 1 and Part 2, perhaps an August 2018 release date, or even a July one. While I have an idea on how old Spider-Man should be, I have no clue what Marvel want. I understand if they want to go the younger route, and I would also understand if they decide to go an older route.

Likelihood of this happening: Eddie Redmayne winning the Oscar for Best Actor

(8.5/10)

Spidey not a tv character? Dude, do you have any idea how is history and mythos is like. There are loads of things that needed to be told on television even in live action. Even the character himself is better suited into television than a 2 hour film series. Better waiting a week than 3 or 5 years. Spidey also has better relationship status with street level heroes than the avengers. He never became an avenger until 2003 and be was a complete joke. The mythos is more important than him in the avengers a d him on tv is more important than him on the big screen.

Here's what I really think they should do.

Hold off on Spidey and wait for Phrase 4 to introduce him. We've had 5 Spidey films in 12 years. Almost a film every 2 years.

It's likely RDJ and both Chriss will be Iron Man, Thor, and Cap after Phrase 3. Bucky may be Cap since Sebastian Stan has a long contract with Marvel.

After RDJ and Evans is gone, Spidey could be the face of Marvel for their next generation so to speak.

you know what would make your editorials even better is if you had some uniformity to your images. They're very well-written, but the "headers" splitting up the different sections all look squished and pixellated. It's super-easy to make images uniform using a program like photoshop

So you're saying Spider-Man should be in the MCU only to NOT be an avenger. If that's the case, he already has an established franshise with an expanding universe built around him in Sony. I think the TASM movies are solid films and I'm excuted to see Spidey take out the SINISTER SIX and more classic Spidey characters like Vulture and Shocker make the big screen. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is a solid foundation. If you didn't enjoy it, that doesn't mean it should be scrapped and rebooted. I read a comment that said they didn't really like TASM2 but they look toward to TASM3 and Sony could learn from thier mistakes. Excellent perspective! What's wrong with a second chance ? If you do want Spider-Man communicating with the fellow Avengers, just make a deal where Sony can continue the SPIDER-MAN CINEMATIC UNIVERSE but Marvel could use his license in their Avengers films. They could introduce him via worm hole like cinnamon said. The epic Amazing Spider-Man franshise can continue while everyone who wants to see Spidey interact with the Avengers will get that chance. Everyone is happy! Anyways, even though I did not agree with your topic ( I bolieve Spider-Man should stay with Sony, check out my Highlight Editorial to see my explanation), that doesn't mean I can't respect your editorial for being well- thought out and very creative and detailed. It's was a top-quality editorial and I enjoyed the read. 👍

Feige reaches out to Raimi to be a producer and the Russo brothers to direct it.

First, no Garfield, Marvel needs full creative control and having Garfield in the MCU after Sony's movies would just be confusing and it would remind the viewer of TASM franchise.... Garfield is also getting up there in age. We need a younger Peter Parker/Spider-Man.

If Spider-Man comes back to Marvel, I honestly think a good approach would be to wait until the Infinity Wars is over and then have Spider-Man start off the next phase as one of the main hero's....

I'd definitely want to see Spider-Man sooner or included in the Infinity War or Civil War but at this point Marvel does not need Spider-Man, including him now might even feel rushed. Plus, Marvel's upcoming slate of films is awesome....

So, if Marvel waited and introduced Spidey after the Infinity Wars and had Spider-Man play a major part in the next phase, not only would it give people time to really want to see Spider-Man again, but it would also give Marvel a chance to introduce Osborn, Venom, Carnage, The Lizard, Mysterio, Doc Ock, Black Cat, ect.... and all of these characters without the audience being reminded of Sony/Webb's movies....

But, most likely Marvel won't be getting the rights back anyway.... so, shit.

All you said is true but it won't happen for one reason.

When Disney brought Star Wars, what did they do? Did they announce a new TV show? Nope. They announced they were doing Episode 7.

You don't buy the biggest property in the field of what the property is and say "let's put it on TV."

Besides Disney/Marvel already have Spidey's live action TV rights. They could make a show this very second but they don't want to because they want Spidey on the silver screen.

IF Spider-Man returns to Marvel/Disney and they considered making a live-action series it sure as shit would not be on Netflix, it would be on Disney's own major network, ABC!!

Disney would put their best superhero front and center on their TV channel because it would benefit other shows on ABC, Netflix is subscription based and there are more potential viewers on ABC than Netflix.

Netflix reached 50 million subscribers world-wide in July, while the ABC network is in approx. 110 million US households alone! See the point??

Spiderman's global retail sales are more than Batman, Superman and, yes AND, the Avengers COMBINE!!! So you want Spidey available to as many potential viewers as possible, my friend.

The first word I wrote was "IF" in caps.

I wasn't saying they would, I was challenging the example of Netflix. IF they considered that option it would be ABC not Netflix. That's the point.

And I wrote on another editorial, if I"m Disney/Marvel and I have Spider-Man's TV rights, I make a live-action series featuring Miles Morales NOT Peter Parker. Reason being, should Disney/Marvel require film rights, they would then have two Spider-Man projects, Peter Parker in movies and Miles Morales on TV. win-win-win

I fail to see people's problem with Garfield. He is great in the role, he just isn't playing 616-Peter Parker. Just like Chris Evans isn't playing 616-Cap and Hemsworth isn't playing 616-Thor.
Garfield is playing a character based on the (far superior) Ultimate version of Peter Parker (as is most of the MCU).
imkennypowers
imkennypowers - 1/18/2015, 9:22 AM
@LEVITIKUZ

No it's entirely different. A live-action Batman Beyond TV series is the more accurate comparison. DC owns the film rights to Batman, Disney/Marvel do not know own film rights to Spider-Man, they might own the TV rights.

What happens if Disney/Marvel does a live-action Spider-Man series starring Miles Morales on ABC and it's better than SONY's Spidey movies with Peter Parker??? It undermines SONY, gives Disney/Marvel even more leverage than they already have and Disney/Marvel have Peter Parker in the MCU sooner than later.

@DEVLIN712

I won't lie. When I saw TASM2, there were a couple moments where I feel Garfield was Spidey and love it (very very short moments). Then there are moments where I hated.

The problem with Garfield isn't him. It's not. It's the direction of the film and how his character is being wrote. That's why people dislike him. Garfield is basically like Arnold's Mr Freeze. People say how Arnold was a terrible pick for Freeze and how he was miscast but he really wasn't.

If Freeze was written like the BTAS Freeze and Arnold's performance was like that of his performance in the Terminator films with him being cold and emotionless in terms of facially, he would have been a perfect Freeze.

Again Garfield isn't the problem. Problem is the writers, director, and producers.

This is simple, Spiderman dont fit anymore in the Marvel Franchise, is sad, but is true, Kevin Feige plans never cover Spiderman, X-Men or Four Fantastic, so even if Sony give to they the rights, i dont think we will even get what Spidey deserves...

Because they will do something like or put him in Civil War and destroy the secret identity, to maybe put some space in some year to put there Spidey and that is even if Feige take the chance to changes somethings.

Because of the rest, Spiderman is not part anymore of the Marvel franchises of movies, he dont fit right now in the plans and to put him will make everything change, so...
Lhornbk

Ok, first the idea that a deal has already been reached and they're waiting till comic-con to announce it is just stupid. There's no way they sit on the news for half a year. Marvel and Disney have both shown that they are perfectly willing to announce things at any time, not just during a convention. Phase 3 was announced separately. And I think they'll want SDCC to focus on Civil War, not Spiderman. So I doubt a deal has been reached yet, and when/if the deal gets done it'll be announced immediately, by Sony if not by Marvel (why would Sony keep it a secret? In fact, they would want to announce it asap to appease their stockholders.)

As for what to do with him, put him on the shelf for now. They don't need him right now, and yes people are tired of him. Wait till Phase 4 at least.
