Looking Back On Watching Spider-Man (2002) For The First Time

I look back at my memory of seeing my favourite superhero Spider-Man on the big screen for the first time.

Back in 2002 I was a mere 8 years old and was going to see my first superhero movie in theaters - Spider-Man. I was obsessive about the character at the time. I had watched every episode of 90s Spider-Man show (the best superhero cartoon ever imo) as well as the original 1967 series. I read any Spider-Man comic I could get my hands on (I particularly loved anything that featured Electro or the Sinister Six) and even dressed as Spider-Man on several Halloweens. And then the movie came, to my surprise my dad took me on opening day right after school (it has since become a tradition to see every Spider-Man movie on opening day with my dad, myself, and now my younger brother) and saw the film.

The reaction I had to watching it for the first time is still so distinct in my mind. The theme, the origin, the death of Uncle Ben, the fight with the Goblin, and that ending - oh that ending.

Even to this day I get the same feelings and reactions as I did to watching it all those years ago. From the goosebumps I get every time Spider-Man swung through the city to getting teary eyed over Peter crouching near a dying Uncle Ben.

To me the movie captured everything Spider-Man was so perfectly. Raimi and Co. understood the character and the universe, and their affection for that universe translated on screen seamlessly. It was funny, it was genuinely emotional, and of course epic.

And while better superhero movies have come along since, nothing can replace that feeling I had watching Spider-Man on the big screen for the first time alongside my dad. Nothing has come even close.

I remember seeing spidey for the first time aswell, good times, Spider-Man has been the only film I've watched multiple times at the theater, I watched it like five times haha, I indeed got a little obsessed, but I was a lil' boy, whatcha gonna do? Great little write up :)

I was a freshman in high school, and caught a matinee. The theater was packed, such a great atmosphere, and I'm not being sarcastic - we were all there to see Spider-man, 100% invested. All age groups, from kids to grandparents were in attendance. And these kids were so immersed, they were SILENT throughout. Well, not throughout, but they didn't get bored and run around, or start talking. They giggled when it was appropriate.

Whenever anyone bashes the movie, I recall that day, and think "what an idiot".
If you watch it a million times, sure, you'll get bored eventually. It does drag on in the first act, but then picks up like a shot of adrenaline. What's amazing is that it lasts an entire 50 minutes before we get a shot of Spider-man in costume, which, I think is longer than Batman Begins and the El train scene (bizarre place for Batman to make his first appearance). I don't think any movie will ever have that kind of hype again.

Damn, I was the same age man!!

Love this movie, even today. Spider-Man 1 is this generation's Superman: The Movie.

8 years old damn lol. :p

Yeah can't beat RAIMI's SPIDER-MAN, (forget 3) 1 & 2 untouchable Spidey wise.

Cool read thumbs.

I am a little biased when talking about this movie because I was about 7 years old when it came out. I had Spider-Man everything when this movie came out. I had all the merchandise and toys for it. I still feel like a little kid when I watch it. It is most definitely one of my favorite movies. I know a lot of it might be nostalgia, but it is still a lot of fun to watch.

Love the first two Spiderman movies, plus the first had scenes shot in Cleveland.

I was 9 when I saw it, missed it in the cinema but got the DVD for Christmas that year. My first DVD, still in my collection. It's a bit dated but I still love it because it reminds me of my childhood. Hell, I even loved the look of the Green Goblin at the time, thought he looked bad ass. It's still my favourite of the Raimi trilogy, and even though I prefer The Amazing Spider-Man movies, I still love the first two Raimi movies because they remind me of my childhood, and the first one in particular will always be special to me. It makes me think of the tagline to Superman: The Movie... that movie made a whole generation of kids think a man could fly. Sam Raimi's Spider-Man left me feeling like I could swing across a city, just like Spider-Man.

Raimi's Spider-man movies were definitely the best (sans Spider-man 3 of course... What a disappointment). I really don't get the hate they get now that there is a Webb universe building. I wish the new universe all the best, but it's just not my cup of tea. Hopin that TASM2 changes my opinion. But I definitely rate Raimi's Speider-man movies overall... And that Danny Elfman score! Don't get me started. I can hum the intro to all three movies at the drop of a hat.

Both Spider-Man and TAS were good movies with their own share of flaws. Though TAS did right with making Peter Parker a genius to build the Web-shooters and featuring Gwen Stacy as his first true love; SM was an easier movie to watch and enjoy. It had heart.
