5 Upcoming Comic Book Movies Which Should Be Rated-R On DVD And Blu-Ray
With Batman v Superman set to receive an extended R-Rated cut when it hits DVD and Blu-ray, which other upcoming superhero movies should do the same? These are the most essential options.
Regardless, just like the success of Deadpool is going to inevitably spawn more R-Rated comic book movies on the big screen (here's looking at you, Lobo), this home video release being a hit will also no doubt do the same.
So, which of the upcoming and most highly anticipated superhero movies should receive similar treatment when they reach your Blu-ray player? Here, you will find a mixture of Marvel and DC adaptations which I believe will be even more awesome with an R-Rating, and I have a feeling that a fair few of those listed here will definitely surprise you. 5. Wonder Woman
We've seen only seconds of footage from Wonder Woman (and a lot of set photos), but I still think it's fair to say that the movie looks f***ing awesome. While I can't deny that a big part of me would have preferred to see the character in a present day setting, World War I is an inspired choice, and should allow things to get very dark and very violent.
It was after all a terrible war, and an R-Rating opens the door to that being further explored. That's important because if this really is Diana's first exposure to our world, she needs to see firsthand the evil that men are capable of, and more blood and violence would acheive that. Plus, the fact that she kicks ass with a sword pretty much guarantees some brutality here, and a more mature cut means we get to see Wonder Woman unleashed!
4. Aquaman
The words "dark" and "gritty" have become something of a cliché when talking about superhero movies these days, but you know what? I want Aquaman to be as dark and gritty as possible! What little we've seen of Jason Momoa in the role points to his version of the King of Atlantis being a real badass motherf***er, and his movie needs to show that.
Assuming for a second the plot will revolve around Arthur going to war with his brother Ocean Master, seeing plenty of blood in the water is an inevtability, and I want scenes in this movie depicting Aqauaman taking out those who oppose him with a school of sharks! The point is, this is a DC Comics movie which would lend itself well to an R-Rating regardless of where the action takes place, especially as we're talking about a guy with a spear for a weapon.
3. Ant-Man And The Wasp
An R-Rated Marvel Studios movie? I know it seems unlikely, but if there's one which would really benefit from a more grown up cut on Blu-ray, it's Ant-Man and The Wasp. This time though, I'm not talking in terms of violence (even if the thought of seeing Scott Lang shooting through someone like a bullet is weirdly appealing).
Instead, I would say that Paul Rudd and Adam McKay's brand of humour definitely fits the R-Rated realm a little better, and a director's cut with some slightly more risque jokes would be a lot of fun and potentially elevates this sequel from being yet another family friendly Marvel movie.
Don't get me wrong, I thought Ant-Man turned out great, but a version where Rudd and his fellow actors get to really let loose has the potential to turn this into a classic.
2. Captain America: Civil War
Sticking with the Marvel Cinematic Universe for a second, and Captain America: Civil War is another of their movies which would lend itself well to an R-Rating when it hits home video. With so many characters in the damn movie, you have to believe that a lot of content will have been left on the cutting room floor, and with some very brutal and bloody fight scenes in the trailer, it probably wouldn't take much for the MPAA to slap an R on an extended cut.
Does the movie need it though? Well, if they really want us to buy into this newfound hatred between Steve and Tony, I don't think it would hurt to up the tension by making their battles even more visceral and nasty. Plus, if Cap is going the same way as his comic book counterpart, that should be a very violent scene to ensure it sticks with us all.
1. Suicide Squad
For starters, it would no doubt mean that we get to see an even more extreme version of The Joker (extra scenes featuring him would make this a must-buy), and you have to believe there are plenty of alternate scenes with some more adult language lying about at Warner Bros. somewhere. To not make this R-Rated would be a missed opportunity.
