David Ayer Says There Are Multiple Cuts Of SUICIDE SQUAD; Confirms Joker/Robin/Batman Fan-Theory
In a revealing interview with Empire, the Suicide Squad director spills some very interesting new details about the movie, and explains how The Joker's "damaged" tattoo connects to his murder of Robin...
Ahead of Empire's podcast with David Ayer, the mag has released some of the intriguing details of their chat. Obviously if you haven't seen the movie yet, massive SPOILERS follow.
First off, The Suicide Squad director confirms that there are indeed "six or seven" versions (no R-rated one, however) of what he describes as his “anarchic punk rock art movie”. Apparently the version that made it into theaters is known as the "Dossier Cut" because it dispenses with showing us how the members of Task Force X arrived at Belle Reve, and instead has Amanda Waller presenting the backstories and origins through a series of montages.
There's definitely going to be a lot of fans wishing they'd stuck with the more linear cut.
Perhaps more interestingly, Ayer confirms a popular fan theory about how Jared Leto's Joker came by that shiny grill of his, and reveals that his divisive "damaged" tattoo is also connected to it.
"This is sort of my personal thing and maybe less about a larger connection. But Joker killed Robin and Batman basically smashes his teeth out and locks him up in Arkham Asylum. It’s in the asylum where Joker would have done the ‘damaged’ tattoo as a message to Batman saying, 'You’ve damaged me. I was so beautiful before and now you’ve destroyed my face.' That’s where the grill comes from."
