Currently sitting at a 25% on Rotten Tomatoes,
Suicide Squad continued the unfortunate DCEU trend of having mixed to negative reviews upon release. That being said, the film performed
exceptionally well this weekend, taking in
$267 million worldwide, along with setting a new record for the highest Thursday night box office in August, beating
Guardians Of The Galaxy in the process.
While the divide between the DCEU and critics remains strong, it seems that Warner Bros. is quite pleased with how the film fared this weekend.
“It bested anything that we could have expected,” said Jeff Goldstein, Warner Bros. distribution executive Vice President.
“The marketing campaign was brilliant and the performances by the cast, starting with Will Smith, Margot Robbie, and Jared Leto, were just extraordinary. They’re fun and wicked and fans enjoy it.”
In response to the negative reviews, Goldstein stated that,
“There’s a major disconnect with between what the critics are saying and what audiences are seeing.” Time will tell if
Wonder Woman and
Justice League will have any sort of luck with critics. It also remains to be seen if
Suicide Squad will continue its trajectory next weekend, or will suffer the same kind of drop that affected
Batman v Superman.
