Why The Joker, tattoos and all could be the best on screen Joker ever

Editorial Opinion

The Joker has always been my favorite character

He is….

* A Genius

* Totally Unpredictable

* A Psychopath

* A Sociopath

* An Anarchist

* A Criminal Mastermind

* Scary

* Flexible

* Extreme

* The opposite of Batman

But most of all, the Joker is free.  He embodies freedom, he doesn’t care what anybody thinks about him but at the same time, he understands people.  He is completely insane but he makes sense.  He is the smartest person in the room but he looks like a clown.

When I first saw the picture of Ayer’s The Joker, a part of me thought it was a joke.  I was literally in denial.  The Joker would not have tattoos, especially a tattoo of “Damaged” on his forehead.  He’s the Joker!  Then, I realized that I was taking it too far.  Leto is an amazingly talented actor and he definitely has the chops to play a convincing Joker.  Then, I felt a sigh of relief, because there was chance that the tattoos were only there for the 75th anniversary of The Joker.

Fast forward to yesterday, and the recently released set photos proved that the tattoos are real.  This leads me to my current mind set.  The Joker has tattoos, who cares.

Honestly, Leto is amazing, and you can tell by the set photos and videos that he has Joker’s mannerisms down.  You can tell he is going to go all out with his performance.

Most of all, you can tell that Leto and Ayer’s Joker can still be all of the following

* A Genius

* Totally Unpredictable

* A Psychopath

* A Sociopath

* An Anarchist

* A Criminal Mastermind

* Scary

* Flexible

* Extreme

* The opposite of Batman

And, most of all FREE.

I am behind this project, and I can’t wait to see Leto play my favorite comic book character.

The Joker

Awesome article.

I agree, I'm definitely going to give it a chance, the performance is what matters most anyway

I Totally hear you, I don't think it's the best addition, but I put it to the test, and surprisingly, I was ok with the results

Again, not the best addition but

Good article, I'm incredibly excited about this movie but still not sure how I feel about this look. Does anyone know if they're going to do that color thing they did with MOS? I don't know what it's called, but you know, the shit that makes the colors less bright. Cause the only Joker pic I've seen so far that I like, is the small one you posted, the one that's darker than the rest.

I'm not saying it looks bad or anything, just seems too colorful for the MOS universe.

A nice piece @DrKinsolving, and I completely agree with you. Ledger's Joker may be my favourite movie villain ever, but to me Leto seems like the comic-book Joker. The 'damaged' tattoo is a little silly, but I love the rest of the look. And boy does Leto have the acting chops. Good stuff bud!

Leto is gonna kill it as the Joker...wouldn't be surprised if he gets nominations for awards from this role...I like the new Joker's look...I trust Ayer and look forward to the Suicide Squad movie...

@jaysin420

Thanks! I'm not sure how their going to edit the movie but I'm sure it will look good, Ayer is a good director and he really knows how to film street level action, which we are seeing a lot of in the set pics. I hear you though, I really want to see Joker and Batman together, that would rock. I hope they do some type of Joker/Batman promo art

@Minty

Thanks man!!

Yeah, I don't think the damaged tattoo is really going to mess with the performance. Plus, they could always just throw him in a vat of chemicals and .... voila, no more tattoos, haha

I have complete faith in Leto

Why Jared Leto's Joker deserves a chance

1. He's played by Oscar winning Jared Leto.

2. Joker won't be a blogger.

3. Joker even with tats looks better than Kid Goblin and I doubt Ayer will [frick] him up like how Webb [frick]ed up the Green Goblin royally.

4. They wouldn't use Joker just to waste him as the villain. He will be a recurring villain in the DCCU.

5. Harley Quinn

6. Ben Affleck's Batman vs Jared Leto's Joker in Suicide Squad.

The issue was never the portrayal, but the open shirt, gold watch, tattoo appearance (holistic) seems to be somewhat of an unnecessary departure for the character.
LehnsienZad
LehnsienZad - 5/19/2015, 1:43 PM
definitely gonna give him a chance but they really dropped the [frick]ing ball with that forehead tattoo...

who the [frick] greenlit THAT idea?
DrKinsolving
DrKinsolving - 5/19/2015, 1:53 PM
@DerekLake

I totally hear you, but the open shirt has been done before, famously in the Killing Joke

And, I think a lot of the appearance, tattoos, etc, is for Shock Value, which is used a lot with Joker's character in the comics

DerekLake

@DrKinsolving

That's not quite the same as the look that Ayer seems to be going for. But, it's not just the open shirt, but it's also the tattoos, the grills, the gold. Any one of those things would be passable, but the whole appearance makes Joker seem more like a pimp (not the "cool" kind) than anything. And given his interaction with Harley Quinn, it's that which I'm worried about.

No one gets Joker! He's damaged! It says so on his forehead!

Please, the tats make him look like a joke.
DrKinsolving
DrKinsolving - 5/19/2015, 2:07 PM
@DerekLake

I hear you, but Joker is known for smacking around Harley. He even did it in BTAS.... and he does worse to her in the comics

I think if you go to 3:28-3:30 in the vid, you'll see what I mean

But, yeah, I totally understand, but I think the performance will sell it, and I'm still kind of hoping he gets thrown in a vat of chemicals again, and then everything will be fixed, haha

Definitely, the forehead tattoo of all things is just out there

Btw, is your Avatar from Mad Max? I still need to see that, I heard it's awesome

Nice article!

I actually think the tattoos fit the Joker's character. They're very over the top and Joker-esque.

My theory (or at least hope) is that he got one every time he was put in prison that somehow was connected to the crime he did to get in prison. Not every one of his crimes will be represented (because he gets away with stuff), but some big ones are. This really only stems from the supposed Robin on his forearm, but I think that'd be a great explanation.

I love the look of Leto's Joker and can't wait to see Suicide Squad.

I think it's gonna be the best Joker yet, anyway if you don't like it wait like 5 years and we will be getting a new Joker anyway

I'm hoping that in five years the DCCU will have been good enough to continue long enough for Jared Leto to stick around. But that's just a hope...

The anarchist, want to watch the world burn, Joker has been done well already.

If they want to bring a distinct Joker, they could start by giving him some real motivations. "Because he's crazy" is kind of a cheap motivation.
Also, they could show him struggled a bit. Not just magically plant bombs anywhere anytime like he did in TDK.

Those are my two cents.

DrKinsolving - 5/20/2015, 5:47 AM
@ScottMontgomery

I agree with @Kurban , the days of continuity and cinematic universes are here. This is the Joker in the DCCU, if he doesn't die in Suicide Squad, which I'm hoping he doesn't.... this Joker will be around for multiple movies.

This is our Joker.

Also, by the time Suicide Squad comes out, it would have been 8 years since the Joker was on the big screen

True, maybe we'll get an Ace Chemicals easter egg, drop the Joker in again, and.... no more tattoos

@Scorpion8125

That's a really good point man. More than half the time, I don't know why the studios make these decisions.

I'm happy Leto is playing Joker, because I feel like the performance will be solid, but the tattoo idea is really stupid.

The grill I can kind of understand because it makes him look like kind of like Conrad Veidt from The Man Who Laughs,

but the tattoos are a really hard sell, especially the forehead tattoo. I agree with all the complaints, you know, if tomorrow they said no tattoos, I would be happy. I think the performance will be solid though
