SUICIDE SQUAD Star Karen Fukuhara Poses For Playboy; Discusses Her Role As "Superhero" Katana
Karen Fukuhara has appeared in the latest issue of Playboy Magazine, and as well as that photo, we also have comments from the Suicide Squad star about playing an Asian superhero on the big screen...
Katana is perhaps one of the most interesting characters in Suicide Squad. Rather than serving as a member of Task Force X, she'll instead be Rick Flag's bodyguard in order to watch his back against the threats posed by the villains he's attempting to lead into battle in the David Ayer helmed movie.
Despite the fact that she's often portrayed as being a tad deranged, Katana is a good guy, and based on comments from Karen Fukuhara in a recent chat with Playboy, that will seemingly remain the case.
"As a first-generation Japanese American, I’ve always wanted to play a samurai warrior like my Suicide Squad character, Katana," she says in a piece accompanied by the image below. Samurai are almost always male, so growing up in America I had a hard time figuring out role models. Katana and I may not have the same personality, but coming from the same cultural upbringing, we share core values. In Japanese culture there’s this idea of putting others before yourself, but I’ve also never wanted to let myself down. Someone recently told me how refreshing it is to see an Asian woman as a superhero. That stuck with me. Stand up for yourself and what you love." These comments appear to cement Katana's superhero status in the DC Films Universe, and it's going to be fun seeing how her story plays out in Suicide Squad and beyond. There's not long to go until August 5th now folks...
