After a season of teasing and text messages, Superman is finally coming to National City!
Earlier today, The CW announced that the Man of Steel will make his grand debut in the first two episodes of Supergirl's second season where he will be seen visiting his cousin Kara, who is played by Melissa Benoist. Following the announcement, executive producer Andrew Kreisberg expressed his enthusiasm: "Greg [Berlanti], Ali [Adler] and I are beyond thrilled to welcome Clark Kent and his slightly-more-famous alter ego to the world of Supergirl, Superman will be appearing in the first two episodes of the new season and we cannot wait to see who next dons the red cape!"
The network is currently in the process of casting the iconic role, and while there aren't any contenders to speculate and debate on just yet, fan support for former Superman Tom Welling, who portrayed Clark Kent for ten seasons on the hit superhero drama Smallville, which coincidentally also aired on the CW, is already ramping up on social media platforms. Whether or not Welling is actually interested in reprising his career-defining role and/or whether the network actually approaches him is yet-to-be seen, but if it is Welling, it would certainly be a welcome sight even if Kreisberg's comments seem to suggest a new actor will be donning the cape.
So, what do you guys think? Who would you like to be the new Superman? Or would you rather Welling return to the role? Maybe bring Erica Durance along too. Another potentially interesting option, if he's available, would be Matt Bomer (The Nice Guys; White Collar; Chuck), who was rumored to have been a finalist for the Man Of Steel job and has also previously voiced the Last Son of Krypton in the DC animated film Superman: Unbound. Sound off with who you'd like to see below!
The hour-long drama centers on Kara Zor-El, Superman's cousin, who was born on the planet Krypton and escaped amid its destruction years ago. Since arriving on Earth, she has been hiding the powers she shares with her famous cousin. But now at age 24, she decides to embrace her superhuman abilities and be the hero she was always meant to be.
