Superman Returns - Sequel or Reboot?

We all know that The next Superman film has been under question...

Editorial Opinion

1 question what the story should be about

2 who should direct

3 who should be the next villian

4 who should be on the cast

5 Will there be a sequel

Now we all know Superman Returns was not as action packed as a lot of you thought it would be but since they have rebooted the series you dont need to explain the origin or why there was an abstince of a superman film the last 20 years now that they have exsplained what has been going on we can now go on to more action packed Supes films.

Answer to Question 1- we need a story to base the movie on well i say we look at the 90's death of superman since bryan singer (director of x-men 1&2 superman returns) added super son in SR i say we start off the story another 7 years later. superman is finaly excepted back into the daily life of metropolis & lois lane's previous lover from SR has left her 6 years before. he takes there son with him and she never hears from him again.
now lois is romantically involved with superman once again.

Answer 2 i think gavin hood or christopher nolan should direct.

Answer 3 now as i told you its been 7 years and every thing seems to be going right luthor is out of jail but is not the main villian hes ia a side villian the movie would begin with a fist smashing the side of a steel wall later in the film you will see doomsday bashing his way threw the wall and then it will begin the fight scene of a life time now keep in mind the movie will end with the death of superman.

Answer 4

Clark/Superman-brandon routh

Lois unknown some one who looks more mature not kate bosworth

Jimmy-Sam Huntington

perry white-Frank Langella

cat grant will be a new character added to help lois and jimmy over there grieving of superman

Answer 5
yes there will be sequels if it turns out right

first sequel will be based on the funeral and the merge of new superman wich will include the son from SR as superboy suffering amnesia from a man that killed richard his dad

and that is the plan i have put out for the reboot

I def say keep Routh. I liked him as supes and clark. Braniac should be the main villain.

really?? this article...AGAIN???? this is the 40th time in two weeks, and i don't think anyone on this site can count high enough to know how many TOTAL times this has been put up.

hey, maybe we should put something up about the spiderman reboot, that's something we've never talked about here...

I don't think the death of superman comics is a great idea for the next film. outside of comicbook fan circles, I can't see it doing well. It's too different to all the other superhero films out at the moment.

I think eventually, after this superman saga, someone should do a 'death of superman' trilogy of films following the comics. I don't think superman lore (not origins, but the lore of his universe) is fresh enough in people's minds to do such a massive and complicated story as thsi right now. Though I do think you have it right with having a film start with the steel door fist thing and end with the death of superman, the next one be the rise of the supermen, and the final one being the return of the real superman and defeating of doomsday :)

Routh for Superman :)

I'm not sure, but I don't want a reboot. SR was a fresh start. I think Superman should battle Metallo, Bizarro, Braniac, Darkside, Resurrected Zod, or Mongul. I want Lex Luthor in the movie because I want to see Superman getting angry with revenge and almost killed him after being stabbed with a stupid Kryptonite Knife. Plus Superman still needs to get his remaining crystals so he can talk to Jor-el again.

Rebooting is not an option. Keep Brandon Routh, Kevin Spacey and the SR cast, found another Lois Lane, and director.

i think most of the viewing audience is looking for the Reeves/Routh diplomatic version - rather than the agressive born leader type we have in the comics and animated series- i don't think we can make a hybrid of the 2 - if they reboot it i think they're gonna make it more teeny like they're doing with Spiderman, but as i heard someone say, Routh as leader of the JLA might not work

reboot please. they made it wayyyy too much like the old superman films which is why it didnt work. we need a new director dor this. get mcg, Guy Ritchie, nolan, Louis Leterrier, or Jon Favreau.

Everything was good enuff, except Luthor. I dont want to even see any reference to him whatsoever. Not even as a side villain.

Superman Returns wasn't that bad. It was true to the Donner films, witch to me is the standard, and musical score is memorable. And it paid tribute to a lot of the history if to n cought any of it. The only thing I would have changed would have been the supes has a son and that terrible suit.

Director: Call me crazy but how about James Cameron. If you want action look at what he did with the Terminator, T2 and Avitar. And if you need a love story I guess you could mention Titanic to.

Villains: Brainiac and Luther or Zod for villains. You could tie in Brainiac coming to earth the same time Kal-El did and he teams up with Luther in some way. Zod could make a grand return from the Phantom Zone.

Cast: Keep Brandon Routh. Did anyone else notice at times during SR how much he looks like Christopher Reeve? Get a new Lois but keep the rest of the cast from SR.

Yep. Agree with the majority here. Routh and the continuing story..a different director maybe, but I think if Singer got another crack at it he would be more comic/fanboy friendly with a sequel.

BUT, its all moot anyway because the next time we see another Supes movie, Brandon..and myself will probably be pushing 50!

That reall isnt the way i would go with it. I would never include anything that Brian Singer had his hands on. They need to reboot completely and tell the story in a more dramatic and action packed way. Just like they did with the Batman series. I wont lie Routh wasnt bad but they need to give him some better material to work with and he should be fine.

I am okay with a reboot as long as we don't have to go through the whole origin story again. I liked Routh as Superman.

The current trend to reboot everything and anything, churning out big spectacle films with little or no substance is very irritating.

Too may big names control what’s going on in films nowadays, they need to go back to basics and try making new original films the old fashioned way!

Theo I disagree with the philosphical direction Singer was taking Superman...wth...go for a sequel and shift it towards action pic. Give us another, stronger alien threat. The latest Brainac story from the comics was a fine read. That villian would work very well. I have no desire to see the Death of Superman story until the character is better re-established and used as a spring board for other DC character movies. The Superman franchies should be the foundation of the DC Universe on film.

If Reboot, Great, just no more origin story and no Lex as lead Villain. Its well past time for Superman to stop that alien invasion or take out a super powered advisary.

They should keep Brainiac and Darkseid (cant forget Doomsday) for the last few films

I say Bizzaro for the next, with the SAME cast from Superman Returns

R.I.P. Spider-Man series

now that people have thrown there opinions at me i think they should add at least one or two movies between the seven years and the should bring in brainac just to show there are more villain then zod and maybe a film a bout bazaro or parasite

Michael Bay should produce the next few movies. I think his "large scale movie" style would be a good fit for a supes flick- lots of action and big fight scenes. Maybe at the end he could show Superman out in space, punching the shit out of a comet or something.

Whatever they do, the next movie should completely ignore Superman returns, just like IT ignored most of the other superman movies that were made before it. Not that it was that bad, but the whole "super son" thing just adds too many complications to move forward.

"Hey Lois, I know it's not your weekend, but can you take him for a day or two? I have to fly out into space and stop the sun from imploding... don't start this now...seriously, the world is going to end if I don't.... why do you always have to be such a bitch...?"

And there you go, sun implodes because superman can't find a sitter.

The death of Superman/funeral for a friend/Doomsday could not be ONE move. That's why the cartoon was awful. 2 1/2 years of every title telling one story squeezed into 120 minutes won't work.

We do need more Superman though.

Also, am I the only one who likes Superman Returns? I thought it was great. Didn't care for the suit modifications.

i liked it to batfan! and superman was never ment to be a "dark" figure! the gentleman in shining armour that's what allways was, exactly like routh portrayed him!!

batman can be dark, x-men can be,hulk can be, but spidey is lighthearted, fantastic four is partly humor, and superman is the gentleman.

and if I want to see dark movies..... I'll watch 300,
the punisher, and hopefully conan.
and sin city ofcourse!!

I've been saying this for ages now, but the next film should be a reboot in which Superman is well established in Metropolis and the villains would be Metallo and Brainac with Lex Luthor still involved, but in less of a major way.

Superman Returns was an abomination.

Every single member of the cast was wrong. Routh, Spacey, Bosworth, even Langella. Nothing wrong with the actors themselves, just wrong for the roles as written, wrong for these characters. I know some disagree on the Routh issue, but, more than just the faults with the script, he never convinced me in the role - even when I saw the first stills of him in the suit, I instinctively reacted "no" - and nothing in the film itself changed my mind about that. He does a good impression of Christopher Reeve doing an impression of Clark Kent, but, like a photocopy of a photocopy, it degrades the original rather than enhances it. I know others disagree - and I won't try to convince them otherwise - but Routh was poor and we need a new guy.

It wasn't bad because it lacked action - it's just that the lack of action highlighted the rest of the film's flaws even more than would have been the case if there were some kick-ass action to mitigate it. More action would have made it better yes, but it wouldn't have changed all the things Singer and Co. got fundamentally wrong which would carry over to any sequel.

The kid, of course. Enough has been said about that. Take that as "unfixable problem #1"

The characterisations are all wrong too:
Superman wouldn't leave Earth without a word. He just wouldn't. He would at least tell people that he might be gone for some time, perhaps forever, and they would need to work together for each other even more so now...

Lois, not having heard one word about why he simply disappeared for 5 years, can only assume that he must be dead or some other unavoidable reason. In no circumstances would she ever have reason to believe that he'd just abandoned them without a supremely good reason (that he did just that just compounds the error, rather than excusing it) and if she was going to write anything at all, it would be a glowing 'obituary' about how much the Man of Steel meant to them and how he affected people everywhere and inspired us all, etc. Not that smear piece they showed us in the movie. Not in a million years.

The fact that the kid is 5 years old - and she's led Cyclops to believe that he was the father can only logically mean that she got with Scott/Richard the moment Supes disappeared - not even waiting a few months before moving on (a few months and the bump would make her lie/deceit/innocent mistake moot - it had to be within weeks at most). Is this the Lois we know? Right. Not remotely.

Lex - what a colossal waste of one of the greatest, most complex villains in comicbook history. A megolomaniacal estate agent? Again? And not even a smart one - who did he think would 'buy' any of his barren, lifeless, real estate? Did he not think that wiping out millions to create this useless hunk of rock might make his new country a bit unappealing, potential property selling wise, not to mention the perpetual harassment he and any of his 'tenants' would get from the international community in perpetuity (not to mention the fact that no international bank would touch him or any insurance company cover any of the residents - mundane considerations perhaps, and wouldn't make for exciting storytelling elements, but still, something a freaking genius would probably consider when concocting a 'foolproof plan' to get rich). Then we have sleeping with old ladies for money. And hired 'goons' and a 'moll'? In this day and age? Puh-lease. Badly thought out, throwaway and downright insulting, both to the character and to our intelligence.

As was the whole movie frankly.

Never mind how unoriginal and trite it was to use it yet again, Kryptonite cannot be overcome by an 'act of will' - if that were the case, that implies that every other time Superman has been overcome by it, it must be that he was simply not motivated enough - too weak, mentally - to overcome it. Kryptonite is poisonous, deadly and debilitating - no matter how much Supes tries, he CANNOT simply grit his teeth and lift a mountain of the stuff. Just awful.

Mopey Superman? Stalker Superman? Stupid Superman? Dead-beat-dad Superman? No thanks. I want courageous Superman, determined Superman, selfless Superman, honourable Superman, super Superman. Superman basically. Just do that. Easy.

Sorry, Superman Returns can't be fixed. Adding action to it, however 'kewl', won't undo the mistakes that have already been made.

No sequel. Reboot, re-imagine, re-tell, whatever. But this time get it right.

Personally, I think SR sufficiently "Doomsday'd" the franchise.

They have had so many chances to expand the story of Superman beyond Supe and Louis vs. Luther...Where's Braniac? Parasite even?

If they really want to keep running Luther as a bad guy, give it some diversity...maybe he merges with Braniac? or creates a tag team of Metallo and Parasite to take on superman???

Maybe???

if they do a reboot and start with the origin then they will have to reestablish every thing to add different villains so i think they should just continue with this series instead of redoing the whole story like batman begins did here is a link to a trailer i made with clips and music for the factor 5 canceled superman game http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XfLrc6o1s0I

Superman should start over as a reboot, and Krypton should be reshown to the audience as well. I say let the heirs to Superman get some of the movie profits, as well as Warner Bros. and the people/cast who worked on the movie, so the reboot can be done correctly.
Start of the first movie showing Krypton in its final days. It has been a time of chaos and panic. Recent earthquakes have caused devastating amounts of damage across the planet and many Kryptonians are in need of help. During this time, martial law was brought upon the Kryptonian people by the Kryptonian high council and the leader of restoring order to the planet is General Zod. However, Zod becomes corrupted and he and a group of radical soldiers under his control try to take over the planet by overthrowing the Kryptonian high council. Chaos ensues and battles are fought, but Zod is defeated and brought to trial. He is sentenced to be imprisoned for a set amount of time and is sent in a rocket capsule, where he is frozen briefly, into a ring orbiting around the planet to serve out his sentence, with a computer chip engrained in his forehead to rehabilitate him during the jail sentence. This is the set way that Kryptonians get rehabilitated and serve out jail time; it’s in the comics-before the phantom zone was built.
Jor-el is one of the leading scientists on Krypton and is a member of the Krypton high council. He decides to look into the earthquakes, while the rest of the council focuses on restoring order and peace to the planet. He does research into the core and landmass plates of the planet in the wastelands of Krypton and discovers that the core is unstable and will set off a chain reaction in a short amount of time and will destroy the planet. He comes back to the capital city of Krypton in his ship and tries to warn the high council about Krypton’s fate, but they will not listen to reason, since they do not want to cause anymore panic in the community after having experienced Gen. Zod’s rebellion and the earthquakes that took place, which they believe in simply the planet shifting its plates according to their computer system, Brainiac. Jor-el is forbade to interfere in these matters anymore or will suffer great consequences. However, he has secretly built an experimental space ship to be able to leave the planet, but has only been able to build one in the time and resources he had. He plans to send his son, Kal-el or Superman, away if his research proves true. Jor-el then travels to the central unit computer on Krypton in the capital city, which houses Brainiac in order to see why Brainiac disagrees with his findings. Jor-el discovers that Brainiac lied about the plate shiftings, so that he could gather all of Krypton’s information and escape the planet before it was destroyed. Brainiac is an artificial intelligence central computer that was built to store all information of Krypton and would control everything that ran on computer on Krypton. However, Brainiac planned to one day take over the planet for himself, using Krypton’s technology against the people and create android armies to rule over the people. Brainiac reasoned that his secret plans would not come to fruition and that the Kryptonians would leave him to be destroyed if they knew that the planet was going to explode and would try to save the people instead, so Brainiac sacrificed the planet’s citizens to save himself.
Brainiac then tries to call Krypton’s planetary police force to kill Jor-el, who escapes to his home and sends Kal-el in the spaceship to Earth before Krypton explodes. Brainiac downloads his memory into an android and gets into a spaceship he created to escape the explosion. Also, when Krypton explodes the prison ring orbiting around the planet’s equator explodes but General Zod’s capsule and a few other Krytonian prison capsules are knocked out of the prison ring and escape the blast when Krypton explodes.
Kal-el then reaches Earth, crash-landing into a field around Smallville, Kansas and is discovered by the Kent’s who are driving home. The Kents show compassion toward the boy and decide to take him in as one of their own, calling him Clark Kent. The next sequence shows Clark as a teenager going to high school trying to fit in, while discovering his secret powers, and saving people in danger along the way. He also briefly falls in love with Lana Lang, a friend of his in high school and whom he develops a relationship with. Clark later inquires about his powers and his parents relay to him that he is an alien, showing him his spaceship and a crystal that came with the spaceship in the process. Clark then decides to try and reason things out and discover who he truly is. He embarks on a voyag, leaving his family and Lana behind and ends up in the Arctic around the North Pole. He spends time there and dealing with the pressure of being an alien throws his crystal in anger towards the horizon. In a matter of moments, a giant fortress is constructed out of Krypton’s unique technology and metals that was used for the buildings of Krypton. Clark enters the fortress and finds all sorts of computer information and unique features in the fortress, which is later dubbed the Fortress of Solitude, and Clark activates a computer image of Jor-el, which tells him about his history and who he is.
Later, Clark travels to Metropolis and lands a job at the Daily Planet as a reporter and meets Lois Lane, who is just a friend to him at the moment. At night, he becomes a hero in red and blue tights with a big s, his family crest, on his chest saving people and fighting crime, since he decides to use his powers for good. The people of Metropolis give him the name, Superman, and praise him for his good works. It is at this time that Zod and Brainiac crash land on Earth. Brainiac gets Zod out of his capsule and both decide to come in league with one another to take over Earth. Both come into Metropolis and other parts of the globe and cause all sorts of damage. Superman eventually tries to stop them but is easily defeated. He then goes back to the fortress of solitude and asks Jor-el for advice in stopping them. However, Brainiac and Zod come to the Fortress and find out everything about Superman and who he is. They nearly kill him and destroy the fortress. Superman in his weakest moment is revived by Jor-el, who transfers his life essence into Superman.
Superman returns to the world after a period of training and preparing to defeat Zod and Brainiac after his last encounter with them at the fortress of solitude. Brainiac is destroyed by Superman and Zod and Superman have a tremendous battle on the streets of Metropolis. Zod is defeated and retreats to Smallville, where he kills Lana Lang, and tries to kill the Kents as well at their homestead. Superman, in a fit of rage comes close to turning to evil and almost kills Zod, but Jonathan Kent, Clark’s earth father, and Martha Kent, Clark’s earth mother, stop him from doing so and reason with him. Clark then takes another device that Jor-el built, a second dimensional generator, and places the weakened Zod into the second dimension, a prison dimension, known as the Phantom Zone, where Zod spends the remainder of his days. Clark then finds a second crystal hidden in his spaceship and goes back to the Arctic, where the second crystal builds a new fortress of solitude and a second computer essence of Jor-el inhabits the Fortress. Superman his hailed as a hero and is accepted into society and Clark starts to find love with Lois Lane after a period of time.

However in the second movie, a blood sample is found of Superman on the streets of Metropolis from the fight with Zod and and is brought to Lex Luthor who uses it to create a clone with stem cell research of Superman, known as Bizarro, which is in league with Luthor to try and control the world. Luthor also discovers Kryptonite and tries to kill Superman by those means as well. Superman and Lois Lane also fall in love and develop their relationship further. Later, Bizarro is defeated after many battles and Lex Luthor is sent to prison.
Then in the third movie, Superman fights Doomsday and is killed following the death of Superman storyline, but Lois who was brought to the Fortress of Solitude in the second movie by Superman, when he told the truth about himself, decides, under Jor-el’s instruction to use his life force essence to revive Superman, but this is the last time, since there are only two crystals in the spaceship that was sent to earth with Superman. Superman defeats Doomsday and becomes the earth’s hero forever.

I like your article... and it is plausible (because this is the superman fanboy's wet dream) however I think they should reboot it... just having smallville (not the tv series) come in as flashbacks of his origins (maybe even opening credits?) as for the storyline... we need some great baddies (doomsday, darkseid, parasite, bring back zod) bring superman back down to earth... Superman is not Jesus, have him have some flaws besides kryptonite, have him struggle with his humanity... just so you guys remember, when superman started (in the comics) he had all his powers except for flying, x-ray vision, and oh god I forget... I mean they had the guy eventually have little supermen shooting out of his fingers (ala throwing the S)... BRING IT BACK TO REALITY!!!!
